Nice tour Claire! I can imagine the atmosphere around those streets when the place was bustling pre spicy cough. Pizza shop names are the best - 'Super Fun Happy Delicious Amazing Italian Kapot Pizza...Number 3' Interesting placement of all the girly bars - they seem scattered all over the shop rather than all in one district like in PP.

Hey Marc, I am sad to report that Ecstatic restaurant has closed down. Reckon they just went too far with the name. Those girly bars are all in a very small area, the block is tiny! Another great video from Claire of “For Riel”. Always love love the videos from For Riel. I never went to Kampot during my couple of months in Siem Reap, Cambodia. I’ll have to go when I return. Probably going to stay in Cambodia for the rest of my life when I come back. Be an ex-pat. With some side trips to other countries in the region. I really miss Chiang Mai, Thailand also. Spent four months there before. And really miss the amazing temples and food of Bangkok.

The last time I was there about 5 years ago, there weren’t any girl bars, but I didn’t miss them. It was nice to have a quiet place to spend time. Admittedly, the tuk-tuk drivers were constantly harassing there as well, when in the past they left you alone. Nice to see that some places have survived the pandemic and the tourist loss it caused.

Hi, My wife and I live in Kampot and follow your channel. We have lived in Kampot for 3+ years, I have lived in Cambodia for 10+ years (traveling to Thailand for 40 years) and my wife is Khmer so she has lived in Cambodia all her life and attends college here. You mention the Rusty Keyhole Boathouse. We went there a month or so back and were treated really, really bad. We walked out of the place and will never go back. You also mentioned a drug store on the main street and ended by the hospital. Just a couple blocks down from the hospital is the Davy Drug Store.I believe it to be the best drug store in Kampot.(she is in a temporary location and is building a new store next door) I take 6 drugs a day (old age) and she always has my medication in stock or has it in a day. You also missed Dalys store in the old market. Yes the bakery tuk-tuk is great. Pointing out the post office might have helped some people. I use Book Bazaar a lot and yes they have a big selection upstairs. After a bad experience at O'neils last year we stopped going there. (bad customer service) The Ice cream place one up from the corner(across from the old market) has started making great wood fired pizza, 5:30pm to 10:30pm, ten times better than at Max's.

Oh I am so sad to hear about your experience at the Rusty Keyhole Boathouse. We only ever share a jug of beer and a plate of chips and they have always been lovely - was it to do with their food? I think I know the Davy Drug Store - is it the one just near the Chinese temple? I thought the ice cream place looked really good, with the bonus of air conditioning, so it is pleasing to hear that they also do wood fired pizza! We had pasta at Max's and it was very good. Where is Dalys store? I looked on Google Maps just now but can't find it. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your insight - much appreciated!
@williamwebster1882
@williamwebster1882 2 жыл бұрын
@@ForRiel Hi, Dalys (the old store) is about 3 store fronts down from the corner. Its long and narrow, but has a lot of items.(They actually carry Clamato juice and horseradish sauce) They also have a new store a block away. Last month I had a pizza from Max's I eat one slice and threw the rest away and was sick for a while from just the one slice. Try the wood-fired Pizza at the chocolate/ice cream shop I mentioned, I don't think you will be disappointed. On the Rusty Keyhole Boathouse. You would think that in this time of few tourists/customers they would treat customers better. It is a great location , but the management and employees are very rude and unprofessional. If you guys ever ride over to Sihanoukville try Pepe's restaurant behind the Vietnam Consulate. Pepe is amazing and I would give his restaurant a Micheline star or two if I could. His restaurant is the only reason we would travel to Sihanoukville. He makes his own sausages and dried meats.(some hanging in his cooler for up to a year) His steaks are amazing. Try the meat platter or Pork Knuckle.

Thanks for this video - nice to get a 'walkabout'. Hopefully, you'll give us a walk along the other side of the road, along the riverside. It would be nice to know what you're seeing across the river there. Even in the low, sullen grey skies of monsoon season, the place looks marvelous. I'm fascinated by those brief echoes of french colonial architecture dotted around Cambodia and SE Asia generally. I used to walk past old colonial buildings in Saigon and wonder what the story was. Something about the juxtaposition of whitewashed European architecture transplanted to faraway places... Just one hundred years ago, 'French Indochina', was at its zenith. I wonder what Kampot would have looked like back then?
@ForRiel
@ForRiel 2 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, the riverside is interesting because you can see life on the other side of the river - will add that one to the 'to do' list. I must admit I quite like the heavy grey skies and the mood it gives the place. The colours seem to jump out more somehow. I know what you mean about the architecture. I always wonder what the original purpose of the building was, and also what the upper floor looks like now. Places like Penang with its tight streets full of Chinese shop houses always made me curious. There are some Facebook groups where people share old photos of Cambodia, and it's amazing to see the colonial buildings brand new along dirt streets that are filled with non-motorised transport. Absolutely fascinating! Thanks so much for watching :)

Great local tour video! There seem to be a heap of restaurants and bars for expats. Around how many permanent and visiting expats are there in Kampot now? There is a pandemic and non-pandemic answer to that. I suppose.
@ForRiel

There are a lot of long term expats here, and the population is much less transient than it is in Siem Reap because people here tend not to rely on teaching in schools or working for NGOs. I think Siem Reap's expat population has been much more heavily impacted by covid.

Is the area around the Two Moons hotel likely to be quiet later at night? None of those bass stomping bars nearby? That was a big problem when we stayed along the river, bass bars across the river so loud you couldn't drown it out. Siem Reap update: we just got concrete on the road our alley way intersects with. They are making incredible progress, really throwing a lot of resources to get this road done quicker.
@ForRiel

Hey Jim, so pleased to hear that the Siem Reap road situation near you is nearly there. It's been a long time coming but will be amazing when it's finished. I think because the Two Moons is set back from the road, the rooms should be OK, particularly if you get one on the far side of the building. There's always the chance of a random karaoke party showing up, though!

I have lived in cambodia for 18 months. Have ridden past many hooker bars, never been inside. Why would i want to talk to poverty-stricken women most of whom have experienced severe domestic neglect? But i did visit such places as a young man in the philippines.😐 And i know many men who frequent those cambodian bars, i would estimate at least 50% are alcoholics.

Yeah those places are strange to me as well. I suppose any conversation is better than none for some men, and they are willing to pay for that (and more, no doubt). I have never seen anyone in those places, but I do know there are other bars like that in the smaller, darker, less visible side streets. I think that is where things get really questionable. PP but still would love to live close to a beach (haha that would also be a helpful video, one on possible beaches, as I am a scuba diver). The FB groups that I find (I am Dutch living in the south of Holland) don't have any groups of Cambodia. Do you maybe could post some links or so? I have so many questions but I will not hassle you of course with them. I will attack the internet to find my questions instead. Hi Olga! So pleased you found our channel! First thing, Keb / Kep / Kaep are all the same place because it is a transliteration from Khmer. We have a whole playlist on it here: kzfaq.info/sun/PLpZDy-_Oz_p7mrfNGn1wz8w9Afxkgn3PJ. It's a lovely but strange place with no town centre, rather, it's strung out along the coast. We preferred to live in Kampot which is larger so has better shops and more restaurants, and it's only half an hour away. Kampot has a river but is not on the coast, however Kep is very easy to reach from there. For Facebook groups, Kampot Noticeboard is great and covers Kep as well. Look for private groups because the public ones tend to have a lot of advertising. Thanks for watching and feel free to ask more questions if you like. Great that you are planning a visit - I think that's the best way to see what Cambodia is like on the ground. :)

I saw a video of Pattaya at morning time today and it was so sad to see everything boarded up and homeless people everywhere all because tourism basically vanished thanks to the pandemic. It's good to see Kampot is at least doing okay, so it seems. I do wonder, what are gyms like in Cambodia? I'm seriously considering relocating to Cambodia next year where the money from my little ebook business will be enough to live off of. I'm just wondering about the situation with gyms for expats. Without a gym, and with so much cheap beer and food everywhere, I might end up needing three mirrors to check my shoe shine after a year of living there.
@ForRiel
@ForRiel 2 жыл бұрын
We watch Rides 4 Kickz and he's shown a lot of Pattaya lately. It seems to be in a very bad way. The wealthy of Phnom Penh like to come to Kampot to play on the weekends and this regular influx of wealth has kept Kampot alive. Gyms in Cambodia are generally not airconditioned and you will sweat buckets while working out. Gear that uses electricity such as treadmills incurs and additional cost, usually per 10 minutes. Local gyms cost anywhere from $0.50 to $1 per visit. There was a big western-style airconditioned one in Siem Reap that was more like $5 per visit but that included all equipment and it had a pool and sauna as well. Yes, when beer is cheaper than coffee or a soda water, the struggle is real!

Agree with the guys who already commented. It's economics, practicality, and availability. Bikes like the Honda Dream can carry a lot of people because of their design. Bigger bikes are also a lot harder to find, and disproportionately more expensive for that reason.
@davem.792
@davem.792 2 жыл бұрын
You can find a few large bike distributors. My friend went to a Harley dealership in Phnom Penh, (he eventually bought a Triumph 1200cc bike) and a bike selling for $10,000 in the States was almost $20,000 in Cambodia. I think the tariffs on big bikes are substantial, not just shipping costs. If you stay under 400cc, it seems more reasonable. And you can try "khmer24.com", a classified ad site popular with expats. I found a new Royal Enfield Himalayan 400cc for less than $5,000. (Just wish I was there to buy it.)
