Alicia Hannah-Kim (Kim Da-Eun) is an Australian actress with a Korean heritage. She spoke with the shows creators and it was decided that her character would have more of a British English educated accent when speaking English rather than American. I guess to make her sound different to Korean Americans. She's being popping up on a lot of content creators shows. Maybe you could speak to her too some time? 🙂

I do like the way they handled the “young Kreese’s” moment - with the understanding that Martin Kove is not a young man, and they needed him to absolutely kick ass in that scene.
@AkumaGekido
@AkumaGekido Жыл бұрын
It was a good move. I've watched a few reactions, but this time I realised something. Even though they have 'young Kreese' fighting, the way he's fighting feels very accurate for an older man fighting younger guys. For example using the environment to damage them, taking each one out quickly since he probably wouldn't last in a longer fight.

That’s exactly what I told my wife when we watched that scene! I said it felt like Mr Miyagi’s spirit was there with Daniel in that moment. The writers did a wonderful job keeping Miyagi in the show, even with the actor is no longer with us. This scene was so healing and uplifting, and probably my favorite scene of the whole show. The Kim Da Eun actress is actually Australian-Korean. I’m not an expert on British/Aussie accents, but I read in an interview that she wanted the backstory to be that she was taught English in British schools, so maybe it is a British accent. Also, I think two of the members of the squad are MMA fighters, one of whom (black guy), is kind of famous. The rest are stunt actors I think, a few of whom are regular stunt guys for this show

Also an observation but the sunglasses thing he did not only came from Him trying to hide his injuries from fighting silver but it also is a callback to when Danny first got beat up by Johnny and tried to hide his injuries from His mom. It in essence shows him running away from the situation like he did in the first move instead of trying to face it directly.

I absolutely adore how the characters are coming together to finally support Daniel in what is, essentially, a very personal battle. Chozen and Johnny's conversations is one of my all time favorite moments from the series so far, it's just so wholesome. Daniel has had some level of PTSD since Karate Kid 3 and at the start of the episode is well and truly defeated. He's tried his absolute hardest to protect his family and innocents, and it almost made him lose everyone. His mention of Robby, one of his deepest losses, is particularly heartbreaking. But everyone coming back, seeing Daniel's old nemesis' ready to fight to avenge him, Robby apologizing to and forgiving him, and his son joining him in the fray, I wanted to cry it just warmed my heart.

I’m not a translator but I’ll do my best to explain. Maybe others can help explain better. The Korean-speaking sensei at the end of the class said 차렷 (cha ryeot) which means “stand in attention” and 경례 (kyeong rae) which means “bow/salute”. It can be used in class when a teacher exits or in the army when a superior officer leaves. In this situation, he is telling the students to stand and bow as the female teacher is leaving.
@Fureviusx1x
@Fureviusx1x Жыл бұрын
This is correct :) I practice Taekwondo, and we use these exact same words at the start and the end of class. When the teacher says "charyeot" we line ourselves up and put our arms and legs together into a "ready stance". Then when the "kyongnee" command is given, we bow facing our sabumnim (teacher).

He's also not wrong in that some may find the merging of japanese/korean slightly offensive given the japanese empires attempts to dilute and wipe korean culture from history during the occupation. Although the show references Tang Soo Do, Gen Choi (along with the TKD founders) intentionally attached figures from throughout Korean history to the 24 tul meanings in order that never again could Korean culture be so easily destroyed once TKD spread throughout the world.

@@rich00p One of the things I disliked about this season were these bad teacher/henchmen characters if I'm being completely honest. The lead female teacher does not act like any Korean I have ever met; she is basically doing an 80s-style dragon lady Asian stereotype (I know that was the intention, so I don't necessarily blame the actress). On top of that, Korean martial artists would never be referred to as "Sensei", which is a Japanese word. It is nonsensical. It feels like there was a complete lack of understanding about East Asia, and I doubt there is any Asian on the writing staff. Not that there necessarily needs to be, but it just wouldn't surprise me. If you're going to go down this route, do it accurately while maintaining the fun Cobra Kai style. They did this well in the first two seasons, like Daniel asking Kyler where his parents are from in S1. This direction in S5 was pretty weird, even though there were other things I loved this season.

I don't believe using "Karate" as an umbrella term is doing any injustice. As far as I know "Tang-Soo-Do" is literally the Korean reading of the Kanji for "Karate-dō" - maybe you can confirm that? Anyway, Tang-Soo-Do is what the Koreans called the styles that consisted of 90% of what the Japanese had taught them, and some teachers like Jhoon Rhee (my teacher's teacher's teacher 😅 - representing Chung Do Kwan) used the term "Korean Karate" before settling on the newly coined "Taekwon-Do". So the style of "Taekwon-Do" I learned has much more in common with Shotokan than with Olympic or even ITF Taekwon-Do.

I think the patches have to do with Korean styles of martial arts. Tae Kwon Do etc. When I was learning the Chuck Norris System which is his own style based on Tang Soo Do there are very strict rules about the patches.. They must be sewn on in a certain way. You have a patch for the school on the breast. And then you will have maybe rank patch on the arm. And it is required to be sewn on correctly and in the right place. I don't know if they do that in Korea or not.

With Karate being a term for Korean arts - i think now a days people would differentiate between the two. But back in the 80s, many schools just advertised themselves as Karate when they actually taught Tae Kwon Do, for example. It's interesting that Cobra Kai is actually Tang Soo Do, but in the 80s it makes sense that they might have advertised it as Karate, because most people in the U.S. would not have known any better Edit: Oh, I guess Tang Soo Do derives a lot from Karate as well

i liked the using a young kreese for the fight scene. In the west i think its easy for us to ignore the older generations and its a good reminder that everyone has their prime. Plus its an easy mask for the actor There is another flash back this season where Silver buys the dojo for Kreese and its labeled as 1980. They should have jumped this scene back to 1975 instead. The flashback actor looks nothing like Kreese in karate Kid 1. It only being 5 years or so after this flashback scene is a little off-putting.

The decision to use karate as an umbrella term was mostly done as a marketing choice, example right after ww2 many fighting styles changed there name to reflect a new view to distance themselves from any negativity. This is when many "do" replaced "jutsu" such as aikijutsu became aikido. During and after the Korean war Tae Kwon Do teachers opened "karate" schools in the US because they were better known. Even in my own experience my Sensei's selected titles for their schools that were marketable but did not actually reflect what was taught. Karate for me included karate, tae kwon do, jeet kun do, judo, aikido, and escrima. Aikido for me was aikido, judo, kyusho.

When I trained Shotokan in America before my injuries, I never saw that level of decoration or embroidery. Although, it is maybe wrong in the traditional sense it was common for our dogi to just be called gi, at least for my dojo they were completely blank. Even our sensei wore a completely blank one, with no school name or badge or indicator of any kind on it. That said, I think it really is up to the owner of each dojo as a business to decide, which is something represented in Cobra Kai. My sensei actually lived in Japan and trained there, so he brought back a lot of tradition and simplicity with him, and only "dressed it up" as necessary. Other schools were much more "Americanized" with animals printed on their uniforms, or colored dogi or things like that.

We were very traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu, and tried to keep to many of those traditions. I have been to tournaments with several dozen other dojos and some of them were way over the top with patches all over their gis; on the chest, arms, back, legs, displaying everything from how many years they had been in training to weapons they had supposedly mastered.

There are two famous MMA fighters there, Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson and Tyron Woodley. Woodley was the champion in his weightclass a long time, and Thompson is actually a karateka that also teaches kids and is the epiphany of a good guy, even in the UFC where they promote the lowest kind of trash talking. In his dojo they also have a mixture of modern and very traditional means of teaching. He also has a pretty big KZfaq channel.

the patches are common in mcdojos. They were adapted by the Americans because martial arts felt like military to them. as in the word "martial". Some of us who train in Koryu Bugei could care less about patches or ranks.

It is not very common to have patches of all kinds, but some places do have it. It’s a bit of embellishment. The last few training halls I’ve been in have not had it, some had no patch at all even for the style. I think it’s part of the series showing the Cobra Kai is franchised and corporate and glitzy and showy. A negative American name has been used for this kind of martial arts business; a McDojo

I have two uniforms (do-gi). One has just the two dojo patches - one patch in the front upper left and one large patch in the center of the back. They state my school and that I study American Open style karate. My other uniform has a lot of patches from the dojo, tournaments, specific kata, tests, medical (I am a nurse), and other accomplishments. They must be earned and approved by my sensei before being added, but he is pretty liberal with our patches on our second do-gi. We typically wear the simpler first one to tournaments, especially ones where the judges are stricter on the dress code. That is what we do. It may explain some of the embellishments on the do-gi shown in the show. I hope that helps. Osu! 🙂🥋🙏

As for the shortened word, I wonder if it's just that- because I noticed people use tons of acronyms or short derivations for words... so instead of saying Do as well they just say the last part because it's shorter... ?

13:32 it's funny how "oi" sounds identical in portuguese, but in portuguese we use "ei" for this kind of application - most of them when we need to call attention of someone. "Oi" in portuguese means "hi" in english.

Close, it can be a greeting or a way of gaining someone's attention similar to hey as in hey or oi you. Oddly oi is also an offshoot of punk rock with exponents such as Sham 69. The term was coined in the early 80's.

It's been a long time since I was in a dojo (Master Sensei Fumio Demura's dojo to be precise), but I don't recall anyone ever wearing a "sensei patch" on their gi. Sensei William Christopher Ford did a documentary on his dojo before it was demolished due to imminent domain. It's here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b8typ5RixMq7fqs.html

Americans LOVE badges, but my Sensei in The Netherlands (Kyokushin and shotokan) was very against any marks on the do-gi. So only the belt, clean and ironed do-gi and never badges on the back and if needed (during tournaments) only a small badge on the left (heart region) without any 'screaming' colors, signs, etc. But only during tournaments. Always full white, no colors!
