The joke with Johnny is that he's doing everything that's normal in the 80s un America. He's stuck in the past. He uses popular slang and advertising tactitcs that were very popular in the 80s. No one passes out flyers like that anymore. Karate was super popular in America back then as well as other Asian martial arts. It's very nuanced americana humor. It's written very well in my opinion. The actor of Johnny comes across as very genuine.

"The Valley" means California's San Fernando Valley. Yep, it's a real place.

Johnny was the super cool guy in high-school. The irony is that he's still super cool as an older guy but to people of his age.he never lost his cool. Hes just stuck in the 80s

In case you didn't know, Daniel's headband in Cobra Kai is the exact same one that they used in the first Karate Kid. That headband is 37 years old!

The #1 most unbelievable part of this show is how it treats Los Angeles like a small town where everyone knows everyone. It’s honestly kind of funny.

epic, also william zabka( johnny lawrence) is such a good actor he really captures the audience its like he’s a real person instead of an actor playing a character

"In your country, do you guys drink beer at normal temperature?" Alright, so mostly no, beer is typically drunk cold. There are exceptions in some cases, such as stout which should be served a few degrees below room temperature from the tap (though many places also have a chilled tap for stout). There's differences of opinion where lagers are concerned, but in the US, they are typically cold. In Johnny's case, he's doing the time honored tradition of drinking last night's beer. Because (especially when you are living paycheck to paycheck), you do not waste a beer. That's alcohol abuse.

Something I love about this show is that it really digs deep into how traumatic the “Karate Kid” arc of the story was for both Danny and Johnny. Daniel has a crippling fear of Cobra Kai reappearing not only in his life, but in any kids's life, because the sole words “Cobra Kai” trigger the traumatic memories of his high-school past and he doesn't want anyone else to go through that. Notice how he acts repressively towards anything that could remind him of Cobra Kai because it instantly makes him feel threatened. He tries to stay in control and not act impulsively towards Johnny and the Cobra Kai dojo, but the memories and the stress become too much. The fight or flight response literally comes out of him when he kicks Tom Cole's boba, and he needs to get back to what originally made him feel powerful and safe: karate and Mr. Miyagi's advice. It's all about the instincts he developed in his teenage years, those who have more to do with fears and emotions rather than with rational thinking. The past comes back to turn him into a kid again, and that's why I love this series so much: It deals with those teenager feelings and traumatic experiences the characters have been repressing for 30 years now. It shows how much it hurt them, and how it affects their lives now. It's just that, instead of talking through it and trying, idk, therapy, they kick each other's ass and encourage their kids to repeat that cycle of violence. And I'm honestly enjoying it SO MUCH, KICK EACH OTHER'S ASS AS MUCH AS YOU WANT GUYS, I'M LIVING IT

As I learned from my boxing coach, the reason for the two hand mitts is: 1. Easier to get new partners to train with and pick up the pads sooner 2. Helps subconsciously train you to be able to catch a punch, which is used usually when you parry and move the punch out the way or sometimes completely stop it.

To answer your question, in America we do not drink beer warm nor do we drink it from open cans from the night before, unless you are a hopeless alcoholic. The scene where he wakes up on the floor and drinks beer while he's talking to the principal is to show us how pathetic he feels right then and how far he has fallen. Also some people believe that if you are very hungover from drinking too much the night before introducing a little bit more alcohol into your system might help. It's called "Hair of the Dog." So maybe he might have just been hungover.

The strength of the Cobra Kai series is that it flips the script and you wind up rooting for a down and out Johnny, when in the 1984 movie, you rooted for Daniel and hated Johnny. The kudos goes to both William Zabja and Ralph Macchio both for their great acting and their excellent training in Karate.

This final scene was a huge deal for Ralph because people had been trying to get him back in that costume from the films on camera for 30 years and he never did to protect the integrity of the original story (and also for the chance to be cast in other roles). So - giving the improbable yet long awaited re-emergence of the "karate kid" a moment alone in the spotlight (backed with the original film score) was spine tingling!

28:12 Boxing, we use two. You're correct. If I didn't hit directly centre of the flat (There were yellow circles on them for my training), my trainer would hit me with it. Training can be brutal. Japanese cemeteries are smaller? Dude...I've been to many. They're huge. Mr. Miyagi (actor) passed away for real. It's a nice thing to acknowledge him.

Ha! At 9:38 where Johnny is walking is the Habit burger joint. I go there every now and then. There's also a Chili's restaurant there. They also bought the original headband for Larusso at a local martial arts shop in Burbank. If you were to talk to the older generation regarding martial arts at this location, you'd find that it is a really small world. We have so many martial arts greats in the San Fernando Valley, where the show is based on.

These videos have been a blast to watch. If I could ask for one thing, I would really like to see more post fight scene commentary. I really want to see how your expertise meshes with the karate shown in Cobra Kai.

This show often has me agonizing over which Dojo I would choose. Traditional Miyagi Do seems serene and contemplative, focused on the perfection of form and deep learning of technique. Americanized Cobra Kai is more like an army boot camp; loud, stressful, and traumatizing by design in order to foster the mental toughness to keep your wits in a fight, so you can adapt, improvise, and overcome using not just your body, but your surroundings as well. If you've gone the military route, as I did, you keep learning a move here, a trick there, but you become hesitant to concentrate on any style in depth, no matter how effective it is when mastered, because the last thing you want to be in a fight is predictable.

Loving your reactions to these. Cobra Kai gets the balance right between nostalgia, comedy and kicking ass!

I loved Cobra Kai the first time I saw it. I am really enjoying seeing it again with your unique perspective. It's so sad that Pat Morita passed away. I wish he was around for a bit longer for Cobra Kai. He wisdom he put into Mr. Miyagi was great. He was a great man and actor.

I love Cobra Kai, and can't wait for season 4. But this scene with Daniel at Miyagi's grave (knowing Pat Morita is gone, too) made me tear up. Such a beautiful, but sad scene... I saw Karate Kid 1 when it came out in theaters.

Is amazing how karate changed Daniel San, it became a philosophy of life. Respect, Self balance, harmony, better self-esteem , many others. In the other hand how Johny (remember he was rich and Daniel poor in the movies) lost everything because he only learn the techniques of karate ( the slogan strike hard strike first is against Okinawa philosophy “karate ni sente nashi “ ) Afterward is ying yang to me. Its nice to know they honor your culture as well as ours. You see things that we don't and it just makes it deeper and that much more enjoyable.

I like how you mentioned that every kata starts with a block, Cobra Kai doesn't believe in katas, while Daniel's dojo practiced them extremely frequently. In practically every shot at Daniel's dojo you'll see at least one person practicing katas in the background because they believe in defense and only striking when necessary, while the Cobra Kai dojo's mindset is to strike first.

I really like those reaction video on such a great show. In Episode 5 when there is an homage to pat morita that scene is so amazing. Thats whats is so well done with this reboot since its all the same character but older. I think its the first time a TV show is doing something like that.

Great reaction video. Again I have to say, I love the context you give on these, references to what they get right/wrong about Japanese culture. I feel that's one thing we really don't have in the US, is a deep rooted sense of tradition. We are much more known for being a 'wild west' nation, plus we were settled by 7 or 8 different cultures, so there's nothing really defining. Maybe cars, guns, and beer, haha.

I've always wondered what a true Japanese sensei would think about these movies and the what kind of reactions and corrections would be brought about. I've enjoyed every cobra Kai episode and the movies. Thank you for reacting to these movies and episodes. I remember I took karate when I was child. I don't remember much now days. i know how Johnny's kid felt when he saw him be close to another kid. my mother abandoned me during my childhood, so before i found out she never changed when trying to connect with her in my early 20s and we were out at a Denny's, so many little kids just ran up to her wanting to be hugged. she smiled, asked the parents if it was ok, and when she picked up those kids and smiled at them, i almost cried, bc she never gave me that. when she tried to gaslight me when i later tried to talk about how i felt, i knew she would never care about me the same way she cares for strangers' kids, so i cut her out of my life to end the pain

There are a few differences between miyagi do and cobra Kai Miyagi do is made based on goji Ryu and cobra Kai is based on Tang Soo do Tang Soo do is a more modern style with less forms and stances compared to traditional karate. However it does have a lineage dating back to shotokan

The events of Cobra Kai (and most of the first and third movies) mostly take place in the San Fernando Valley, which is located in Los Angeles, California. Ironically, the series is mostly filmed near Atlanta, Georgia. Bit of trivia: the Golf n Stuff they show does exist, but it’s in Ventura, California, which is around an hour’s drive from the Valley (depending on where you’re driving from and traffic). There *is* a Golf n Stuff in the Valley, but the one they show is very obviously the one in Ventura.

I love watching these again with you on your reviews. I get goosebumps too watching some of the scenes. 😁
