Gojira's a bunch of fucking geniuses. The bassline being a preamble to the melody is such a cool touch I didn't notice before, but it really feels like it pulls you in to the track even more. It goes from being soft, to heavy, to just plain haunting in the end: super fitting for its name.

I honestly just think Joe is a performer. He makes things looks more intense than they are. I'm not sure obviously but he has always been all about putting on a show live. So my guess is his "strained" sections are similar to how Devin Townsend will make it looks more intense than the actual effort he is putting into it for theatrics.
@KardavoxAcademy
@KardavoxAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
Totally. Performance is a big part of putting on a good show. I always advise people put that sort of flare on after they've mastered whatever they're doing so that they can vocalize safely.

I saw Gojira a few weeks ago at the KnotFeSt Roadshow. They SLAYED and Joe's vocals were amazing. Thing is; he didn't go all out with the distortion, like he does on the record, or in recordings like this. Luckily, because of his vocal style and it always having a pitch with the distortion, he was able to simply sing and it still sounded very good. But, this led me to beleive that he actually does just belt his heart out when he's on-stage or in the recording booth. Raw emotion and the drive for a good performance fuel's that gorgeous voice of his. Unfortunately that means, after a long tour, it gets strained, and he can't layer on the distortion the same way. And that's why he sang for most of the set I saw them play, and only dirtied it up during parts that go really hard. That's my theory anyway. Sombody who knows vocals needs to sit down with him and have a talk sometime, get him to explain how he does things; because they sound so damn good
@KardavoxAcademy

About that outro thing and the crowd being quite. I saw them on Tijuana a year ago and when they played people were just sitting and standing there and I thought "maybe they don't know them" but as soon as the band asked for screams the crowd went crazy and as soon as Gojira ended like half of the crowd left. It amazed me and made me happy how we were all there just watching the amazing performance which is super weird for a metal band

That Louis Armstrong thing that was mentioned reminds me of the chorus of Dance of the Manatee by Fair to Midland, might be worth having a listen to that song to compare it if you haven't heard it. Definitely not something that you hear often. It feels to me like more of a compression on the vocal cords without being heavily distorted to create a scream sound. I do it when singing along to the song I mentioned, and it feels a lot different from screaming, it's not easy to maintain either. Would be interested in hearing your take on it.

22:10 I never really noticed that but using the bass to foreshadow the vocals is really cool for this song. Bass can really be the the one thing in a song that holds everything together. Can you imagine if it was just the vocals over the whirlwind of notes Gojira plays? The bass gives the melody something to grab onto and allows the song to groove. Thank you for pointing this out I dont think I would have ever caught that myself. Definently subscribing 🤘🤘🤘🤘

Bruh. That’s exactly what makes Gojira so great. The chorus riff to THIS song of all songs takes you to some black metal vocals (wtf ever I don’t listen to metal by sub genre) when the closest they ever were to that was their Godzilla, pre-Gojira days. Anyways, point is they create that atmosphere that takes you into a-whole-nother form of metal. They have that heaviness. Blast beats, groove, that slow chugging type shit, speed, name it. They can integrate traits from throughout the metal spectrum. I found it funny you hear guttural low over the chorus riff for THIS emotional yet still heavy song. Parallel Shift, Natural Selection, Inadequate - Rings of Saturn
@Deathlyill666
@Deathlyill666 4 жыл бұрын
YES! YES! Simplicity is key. The heaviest riffs, breakdowns, anything that’s real heavy is hardly complex, prove me wrong. Something about it. Except Meshuggah, those fuckers have a groove untouchable & a complexity unparalleled. It’s not right how they effortlessly combine groove, complexity & heaviness, but they make it right.

If you do Gojira again, react to anything from their 2009 shows (Garorock, Rock School Bordeaux, etc). React to ENDON's "Your Ghost Is Dead" A Japanese experimental noisegrind band produced by Kurt Ballou of Converge. I don't really know what to say to convince you to react to them but THE VOCALIST...just...please. You WILL NOT be disappointed.

Not gonna lie, your videos are some of the best videos out there for metal vocals. You mentioned vocal compression in your "let's do low vocals" video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y8tnecKqzsW7f5s.html 7:57ish) and I was wondering if you could cover that in a future video (unless you already have and I'm a dumbass). Black tongue's vocalist alex teyen had some good vocal compression from what I can tell, I'd recommend coma or second death. Either way, your videos are super helpful and I'm really glad you exist.

Thanks man! And yeah, I definitely still want to do that video. Right now I only have time for one video a week but once things level out I want to throw more instructional videos out there too :)
