"Where there is a will, there is a way." A true story. I know a woman who left a violent marriage in the dead of night with her two young children, and what she could fit into her car, driving from the west coast to Texas. No child support - nothing. Twelve years later, Mary was still working three waitress jobs, including one in a family owned restaurant. They loved her from day one, and "adopted" her and her children into the family. Besides running the restaurant for 40+ years, the owners (who are amazing people) had started buying rental property beginning in the 1980s in Austin. Mary learned how to buy property from them, and on a triple waitress salary, she bought her own home, and has purchased two rental properties. The owner told me, "Anything Mary touches turns to gold." Mary does not see obstacles, she sees opportunities everywhere, and she makes every dollar do the work of five dollars. "Where there is a will, there is a way."

Hello Kate! Great video! I have definitely struggled some times with the ‚I deserve it‘ trap. However a couple years ago I found the solution for me. Whenever I find myself justifying something with ‚I deserve it‘ I say to myself: Yes, I deserve it. But I deserve freedom more than anything and that’s why I choose not to buy it. I know freedom of financial worries will give me peace of mind and that’s the greatest gift to my future self. 😊

Happy Frugal Friday! Because I sometimes spend money mindlessly, out of default, I write on the calendar 3-4 days that are “No Spends”…if I go to town (I live in the country) to run an errand, I have to constantly remind myself it’s a no-spend day, & try to do things that are free - go to the library, walk at a park, sit in the sunshine, call/text a friend, go through the car wash (monthly membership), drive through a neighborhood that inspires me, etc. I bring something to eat & drink with me to help curb that temptation! When I get home, I feel good about myself…if I stuck with it! 🤣

Kate - once again you hit the Commonsense target in the bullseye. We live in such 'give me NOW' times that saving or waiting for something doesn't seem to enter our minds. Being bombarded daily with hundreds of ads telling us we have to have this or that doesn't help. There's a saying 'the joy is in the journey' which to me also says it gives me something to look forward to having or doing. I'm planning to take a vacation this spring and it'll be a totally cash/debit card vacation. I can return home without having any bills from it, so I know that will mean I'll enjoy it even more.

I think I struggle the most with impulse buying and saying "no". It's my extras at the grocery store if I don't do a pre-order and pickup, it's my husband's little charges at the gas station for soda fountain drinks, waters, energy shots, etc. that add up remarkably quick. It's saying "no" to buying something online to cheer myself up or make me feel like I'm having fun if I'm struggling with seasonal blues.

Large furniture purchases are the category that tends to stress out me and my budget. I have hand-me down and second hand furniture, but have needed to buy a few addition pieces (couch, bed, mattress) for my house. These purchases are large compared to my typical spending and straddle the need/want category for me which I think is what makes them stressful. Sure I could have a room with no furniture, but that seems impractical. My current strategy is to prioritize which items are most essental, do lots of research to find the best value, and stagger the purchases over time.

Beware also when you’re married about having the same mindset as your spouse. My husband, when he was working, would always use the phrase, “It’s only money, I’ll make more tomorrow.” Then when tough times hit with his job, things went downhill real fast. It’s the mindset of someone who believed that because they worked and had a crap upbringing they just deserved everything and anything they wanted. Things have stabilized through the years, but there were some really tough years and a lot of wasted time that you just can’t get back.

I so agree with this. What you said about 'deserving vs. can i afford it' (paraphrasing...) It's true. We can find less expensive ways to have some deserved jollies--on the cheap. This is how I stay sane while cutting expenses and saying 'no' to myself....by allowing myself free or cheap thrills like an hour with a book I already own...a special food or dinner made at home...time outdoors, etc....whatever your thing is. Thanks for the great advice!

My biggest struggle is when expenses come up that I didn't budget for. Example: my dog had $256.00 emergency vet bill. We have a sinking fund to cover her regular bills, not an emergency. Sometimes I find myself taking categories that are over funded and using them to cover expenses that are unplanned. It usually works out but can make my budget very messy.

Dude. Pet insurance is the way to go. For true emergencies. I work in pet insurance and assess claims for 6, 7, 8+ k. Dog ate a sock, cat jumped and fell from kitchen counter, owner gave the dog ibuprofen, spontaneous medical emergencies that you could in no way minimize or mitigate. Pet insurance never will cover a pre existing condition but I can save your ass (and your pets life) for a true emergency.

My downfall is when I see a need in others I give. That need might be time, money or other resources. Not a bad trait except sometimes I forget that I have to have food or heat or clothes too. I will be working on a budget this year that allows for me to give but in a more structured planned way. I have already said no a few times and while I am still not comfortable with doing so the hope is there that it will get easier.

It’s awesome to have such a great heart!! Hi Kate- I love what you said that we can both acknowledge that we deserve to go on vacation or buy something and at the same time deserve financial peace. My word for the year is acceptance which I embraced from your book 📖 reading of “The Power of Now” where Eckhart Tolle said the key to stop suffering is acceptance of what is. There is also an old Spanish proverb that goes “God says: take what you want. And pay for it.” We can choose go spend on things we deserve, but the financial cost is what we have to pay for. We can choose to save wholeheartedly and the cost is discipline and adherence to the steps to achieve the goal. This reframe of thinking puts the power back in our hands and that gives us the wisdom and inner strength to act accordingly. It’s always our choice - we just have to pay for it.

I can imagine it could get quite addicting because it's so fun when it's fun and it's misery when it's not, right? AHHH! Listen, if no spend is a fail, brush yourself off and start again right now. We are not going to get this right 100% of the time. We will fall and fall but as long as we keep getting back up, we can keep it moving. Vow to do a little better today and be confident you can do ANYTHING you put your focus on. I'm CHEERING YOU ON SUE!!!! Thank you for the hugs for Kaden!!! Appreciate you so much! I have so much faith in you!!! What's your next biggest money goal you want to hit?

Hi Kate, just found your channel and like your style and rather nonsense approach to budgeting. I practice many frugal ways of living, and it does all add up, I just subscribed, as I am doing a very, very low buy year and really tracking my impulse buying. Watching videos like yours helps to keep me on track, also i can relate to a lot of your subscribers comments. Thanks

Happy frugal Friday 💜 to 💙 with Kate 👍 May I add something that helped me after pay myself first I added a line item in my budget and called it Live below my means and then intentionally started putting a wee bit into it before expenses. You could start with £1/$1 then keep adding to it to grow the gap between income & expenses.

As a student without money or very limited from within. I will only buy things when needed like you say such as food and basic daily requirenments. I will not buy anything for fun like techonology or fun things only one a year to save my mom and I money. And keep everything I have in good shape and take care of what I have as well to last longer. I will go on vacaction this year when summer is here which is a Fan Expo which does cost for a ticket howeverm only do things that are FREE which I learned from extreme cheapskate shows and bring food or try to if they allow outside food. Keep up with your content I learned a lot as well,

As a natural saver I always squirrel away money to make sure we live under our means. I honestly can't stand to hear adults talking about deserving things. If we can't afford it we don't deserve it. It has become an excuse to put our wants over our needs.

I flip the script sometimes and reframe the words 'I deserve it' to 'my future self deserve to have saving, retirement funds, debt free, no worries about money, security etc... so don't spend money now because future self will thank you one day'. I know this is a silly analogy but it just reframes the statement - you're still doing something for yourself but in the future. You will reap the benefits in time - maybe not right now but later in life. I think it's always good to have a balance and everything in moderation because if you restrict yourself too much (by never buying anything ever) then you might go overboard and you DID work hard for your money but while in debt/having no retirement plan / no savings instead of buying a new "couch, going on super expensive vacations that you can't afford, upgrading your phone, going for lavish spa treatments, updating / upgrading things '' rather treat yourself to something small like a Starbucks coffee/treat or buy 1 book or a candle you love - something that's more attainable and won't break the bank and you still get the psychological benefits and feel of "yeah - I deserve this" but you're not completely derailing your financial life😁❤️ as always love your channel Kate!!

Emotional spending! Going though hard relationship issues as well as health issues. I almost have the emergency fund complete thanks to no spend but i have slipped up the past few days. I need to forgive myself and keep on track for the next week and once my EF is complete I'm going to my favorite store (thrifting) to find myself a new outfit and donate everything that no longer fits me. Thanks kate

Great message-You nailed it. Thank you. While we all "do deserve it" there are easy substitutes that can give us that same satisfaction. For example you have the ability to substitute a bubble bath for a spa visit, a pizza you make from scratch for take out pizza, or a free ebook from the library that you wait 6 months for rather than an online ebook order. Sounds easier said than done however, I work at adjusting my mindset and see the difference it makes in living below our means. In a world where we are surrounded by instant gratification a pause when the "I deserve it" thoughts surface can really help. Thanks Kate-so inspiring.

I've really struggled in the past being influenced by others. We don't have a large income compared to a lot of our friends, and so seeing them spending freely really pushed us to spend more than we would have otherwise. I find that since having our children it's really inspired us to just focus on our family and how we're doing, and to stop comparing ourselves to anyone except our past selves (am I doing better than I was? How can I change it if I'm doing worse?). Now our biggest struggle is mostly just that we're tired! (a 3 year old and a 1 year old will do that to you lol) and so there are some days that I just don't want to cook. I do try to have quick stuff in the house to eat, or to make and freeze extras, but there are times that we run to the grocery store for a pizza or a chicken meal. I know it's not a lot compared to how much we were spending, or how much we could be spending if we got take out instead, but it's still stuff that's not really necessary.

I little progress is still a progress I may say. Having kids will make a little change in our priorities; we become more focused on our family than trying to go along with friends and catching up with how they spend their money and we become more disciplined when it comes to our finances because we want a better future for our family. Continue on that progress, and little by little I hope you can have both savings and investment. I wish you all the best and good job for being a good mother :)

Great video as always. Mr. Bunns made some great comments too, lol. I started a temp job this week, so yes I have fluctuations in income. Retirement income is my base budget I live on. Contract job income is used mostly for savings - and a little fun money. First goal - fully fund my sinking funds for 2022. This includes car insurance, birthdays and Christmas for 2022. After that - save up for a newer car! My car is 19 years old - planning ahead for when the car "dies". I am concerned about rising prices with food, gas and heating. No spend January has helped me see where I can cut back so I can 'keep up' with inflation.

Happy frugal Friday Kate and Ksquad. From watching reality shows I've come to detest the "I deserve more, better, fill in the blank" talk. It really triggers me now. It's just a way to justify what someone wants not NEEDS. I am planning a no/low spend year. My focus is paying down my mortgage and working on my home to make it the place I want it to be. Bought a lot of supplies last year and just need to get done the small repairs, paint and deep cleaning to make my home my sanctuary. Finding joy and being grateful for what you have really helps you live frugally and contently.

This is really an inspiring video and always on-point! I hope a lot of people can learn from this. It's time for us to focus on ourselves and to what really matters and it's time for us to think of long-term so I hope everyone can stop spending money on unnecessary things and perhaps just invest and save that for the future. If we don't change our ways of living, how can we expect a change in our status financially.

omg i KNEW you were going to say "i deserve it"! That is such a bad mindset. I can think of a family close to me that feels that way and they are in such bad financial shape and always have been largely because of the word "deserve". For example still working at age 70 because they have no choice. what good people really deserve is **to be out of debt!!!***
@site_is_down

I totally agree with this! Too much entitlement for a reward or gratification can lead to overspending and we always justify it that way, but no, it should not work that way. Thinking long-term can save us in a lot of financial trouble in the future, having enough savings and investment instead of unwise spending is always a wiser move.
