Kayak Storage Rack and Easy Loader

Just finished this Kayak Storage Rack and Easy Loader for my 3 Waters Big Fish 105 but I think it will work for any kayak really. It makes loading your kayak into a truck super easy and allows it to be rolled out of the way in a shop or garage if need be.
7 2x4x8’s Lowes $2.39 a piece
2 10 foot PVC Pipes Lowes $12.59 a piece
Screws I had, along with the slats for the floor.

The cart itself is 36 inches wide and 32 tall (that is before the PVC is added) you will need to measure the height of your truck tailgate to see how high you need to make your cart.

This is an interesting build... Similar to others on KZfaq that show PVC as the method of support. I was about to build one for my new Outback but decided to check with Hobie for their take on it. So this information is particularly for Hobie owners planning to possibly do this. It may have be pertinent for other kayaks as well. First, I read my owner's manual and lo and behold there is a section on storage and transport and they have a diagram and describe this PVC method and strongly discourage it. As a matter of fact they say that if their recommendations aren't followed it could void the warranty. I decided to follow up with a call to their corporate office in Oceanside to speak to a technical specialist. The person I talked to described this as a "tragic situation". They explained that there had been a number of issues with cracks particularly around the scupper holes that they determined were caused from storage and transport on PVC bunks. They went on to explain that it would sometimes take a year or more for the cracks to develop. Long story short, they strongly recommend against it! Needless to say I'm looking for an alternative method. I hope this information helps others avoid a possible costly mistake.

I did a quick search of the forums and that does seem to be the case for Hobie "Stiff PVC pipes used as bunks along the scupper lines can cause the scuppers to push up into the hull and that causes the scupper area in the cockpit to rise. This seems to be an issue on heavier boats and possibly tied down tight which pulls the rails down as the scuppers are pushed up. Over time and loading Polyethelyene "cold flows" This is why we also do not want boats hanging from the bow and stern handles. The constant load can tear the handles out. Same for leaving a boat on a scupper cart... not good. If the PVC were light enough to bend and conform to a longer length of the hull, the issue may be reduced." To date have not had any issues with mine. Given the price of the Outback, I would do whatever Hobie recommends, their boats are about 5 times what I paid for my 3 Waters kayak. Can anyone tell me what size pvc pipes these are? I know they are 10 feet long. Don't know the width

Had to go out and re-measure to make sure I was telling you right, it’s been a minute since I built it. So the PVC is 3 inch and 10 feet long, they are spaced 14 inches apart and that’s outside edge to outside edge. I put the PVC on the frame un-attached and sat the Kayak on top of them, then marked the outside edges, took the kayak off and then secured them to the frame.
