KBDfans Switch Pad Review | Will it Thock? Pop?

My review on the KBDfans switch pads. Based from the sound test, the switch pad does change the acoustics. It sounded deeper and thockier but not to the degree of the PE foam mod. It could be due to the material being PORON or cut-outs for the pins making them loose. I won’t see this switch pads replacing the PE foam mod but rather it gives an option for people who wants a deep and thockier keyboard but not to the extent where all of the different switches or keyboard sound the same. That was the biggest disadvantage of the PE foam mod which homogenized the sounds of the switches and keyboards.

When listing to the diff in the stock and pads, I think the pads made the sound much cleaner and clearer

Sounds like PE foam completely changes the sound, cutting off the high frequencies every key press. While Poron keeps the sound profile, but makes it sound dampened and a bit muted

When you use the PE foam mod - Do you put the GMMK pro baseline foam on top of the PE foam or leave the rest of the space between the PCB and the plate empty?

Are you using alu plate for your gmmk pro? and how did you make the durock v2 fit?

Alu plate. I just wiggled it in. Its really tight.

I had to press my plate down with a bit of force but i got a really tight fit in. The poly carb does not fit at all with durock stabs though. I would have to file it to make it work.

I don't see the point in that. Its just more effort and you're double layering it. Just choose switch pad or PE foam with tape mod AND foam in the bottom layer.

can you compare it to the tempest tape mod? i think tempest tape mod also produce similar result for way cheaper price and since it only use masking or painter tape it can be found everywhere and its easier to apply since all you have to do is put tape on the back of the PCB

i didnt like the pe foam mod. Kinda makes typing louder than i really want. I guess switch pads is the best way to go to prevent hollowness and get a more quieter sound.

@@vanessahuang6672 yeah i dont understand why ppl would want their keyboard to sound louder. It shouldnt sound muted but also shouldnt sound annoyingly loud.

Late response, but I had the same question but I think the answer is yes. I just saw another video where they used the kbd switch pads and and then placed the pcb foam. However I also have switch tripods which I hope would work with all three combined. If it’s too thick then I’ll just remove the switch tripods as they didn’t make a big difference at all.

The chances that the PE foam mod will damage your PC is extremely small to none. PCs have many safeguards in place for that sort of stuff.

i used to agree, but after changing some switches out a couple of times, 4 sockets on 2 pcbs stopped working. i think its a case by case thing

That’s a socket problem. The PE foam mod if it were to do damage, it would be much more noticeable. Hot swap sockets loosening and/or breaking from the solder join is a common issue. It can be easily fixed with a soldering iron and new hot swap sockets for literally a few cents.

I did both but it sound the same with PE mod only. No difference having both pad and PE mod

The kbdfans pads are designed with the wrong material and cutout. The switch pins need to be cut smaller than the pins to compress them into the PCB. These basically do nothing

The non-hotswap version might be better than this hotswap version since the holes are big whereas the non hotswap only has thin slits.

@@mdmaxson i dont know if you’re trolling or not, but i’ve noticed a significant change in sound signature when using these. it still makes the board as poppy as pe foam but quieter so its better for my taste

From my testing with PE, I don't actually think compressing the switch pins is what gives the PE foam mod it's signature sound. I've tested PE foam mod with the foam around the switch rather than under it and it achieves an almost identical effect. I think the difference is almost entirely to do with the material!

@@Brudder after further testing I think it's material and covering the entire surface area of the pcb combined. Similar to bottom of PCB tape mode. It might be mostly just the covering entire surface vs material though since my glad press and seal wrap on top of pcb is my best sounding board

It’s cringe making everything the same. Dont choose ur switches for sound next time if u PE foam modding. Choose switches only for feel instead

The nice thing about these is that you can use them with any board. I put them in my Atreus because the hollow plastic shell plus aluminum plate mounted switches was loud and rattly in a bad way.
