ℹ️ About the Episode: Truck and RV maintenance are a big part of RV life. You’ve heard us say before that there are no perfect RVs-well, there are no perfect trucks either. We’ve had exceptional luck with our Super Dutys over the years, but they have two major drawbacks: the death wobble and the CP4 high-pressure fuel pump. If you’re unfamiliar with the Bosch CP4 issue, the short version is that this pump was made in Europe, which has different diesel than in the States. Over the years, as the US has gotten stricter on environmental regulations, our diesel has been stripped of many of the lubricants that make the CP4 pump work properly. If or when it fails, the metal shrapnel is sent through the fuel system, creating an issue that can cost up to 15k to repair. 😱 GM and Dodge moved away from the CP4 pump years ago, making Super Duty truck owners even more frustrated. So what’s a Ford owner to do? There are three steps to take, depending on your budget and how long you plan on keeping the truck. The first and best practice for any diesel owner is to use a diesel fuel additive. ARod with Powerstroke Tech Talk recommends this additive, which we’ve added to our Amazon store in the category “For your truck.” Link above. The other solutions are included in this video.

My F250 super duty 2013 blew the Bosch CP4 pump & entire high-pressure fuel system 12 miles north of Seattle exactly 3 years ago this Wednesday. I knew nothing about the issues with that pump. I was pulling a trailer. I had two dogs and my wife. It was 108°, we had to limp into a dealership in Coeur d’Alene. They had the truck for nine weeks had to drive home and fly back. That is a $12,000 repair. Very smart move to do the preventative maintenance on this fuel pump. It’ll be worth it in the long run. Congratulations.

Great mechanics like that are hard to come by. It is so nice to see a guy getting a ha..(woops, family channel).....getting excited over a new air intake system. Certainly costs some cash, but far less than a CP4 repair would be, so I think a superb mod for anyone keeping their truck a long time. Good stuff, and as always, safe travels....

Sad that a 2023 still has a CP4 in it when Ram discontinued it in 2020 and GM discontinued it in 2016. And of course even a 2024 Ford also has a CP4 fuel pump. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

My CP3 scattered in my 2011 Chevy Duramax 6.6 with only 110k miles on it a couple of years ago! Was towing my 5th wheel hauler through heavy traffic when it failed without any warning. The entire fuel system, including tank was contaminated with metal filings. A nightmare to deal with. I had never heard of the issue and was lucky to find a Duramax guru about 50 miles from home. Replacing the CP3/4 is the only real solution if you intend on keeping your truck. Happy for your upgrade, you won’t regret it. Happy trails friends!

FASS fuel system, SnB air intake Banks air arm and exhaust, bigger/upgraded turbo and heading down the road the power is noticeable, the turbo whirring/whistling just means it’s purring because of all of the nice air it’s getting!!

My primary reason after a breakdown on the road and no one being able to figure out why my engine was throwing a code when towing is the fact there aren't many mechanics as good as Arod when you need them. I have a 2019 F-350 SD 6.7 diesel too and although haven’t replaced the CP4 system yet, I did replace the stock OEM air intake with the Banks Ram Air Intake system and added more horsepower and increased fuel economy. Also, replaced stock OEM upper radiator hose which is prone to blow due to thinner rubber wall and replaced with SPE products hose and added the high flow/low temp thermostat. Even after flushing, refilling the newer yellow coolant, the temperatures drastically 15 to 20 degrees when towing our camper. Even with the warmer summer temperatures, it continues to run cooler than original. It really works! Thanks for this informative video from ARod, I am a loyal follower. I also use the Archoil products and have had increased fuel economy. Thank you, safe travels, God Bless. 🇺🇸

Great video! Thanks for the info, I have been doing a little bit of fact finding, but this helps tremendously. I have a 2019 F250 with about 45K miles. My previous 2008 F250 had the 6.4L International motor and no DEF required, I put 310K miles on it... kind of hated to sell it since it was in great shape and everything still worked. Anyway, I am a strong advocate for maintenance and immediately ordered the fuel treatment and will start with that. I'll probably do the CP4 to DCR pump replacement within the next year. We love the channel and totally get where your coming from and really enjoy the video's on maintenance. I would like to say and it may have already been said in the comments that I have owned 2 2013 LML Duramax chevys that use the exact same CP4 fuel pump. I think Chevy used them from 12-17 or somewhere close to that. Both of my Dmax trucks went over 200k and the one I have now has 214k and it's bone stock and has hade zero failures except for emissions systems, Def tanks, and the sort. It's a very low percentage of failures with a properly maintained Truck. A guy told me change the oil every 5k and fuel filters every 10k and I live by it and have great success. Just trying to give balance to the force;)

Mark, Good choice and good decision! I bought my 2018 Ram 2500 NEW in 2019, due to the CP4 change. I worked on power generation and distribution specifically the back up generator side for a few years through college. I kept up with the engine industry since graduating college as a engineer, because I was going to get a diesel truck down the road. The CP4 and the 3.0L diesel motors we got from the big three were all EU based. I know that Europeans are our distant cousins but their EU Transport regulations are different and their approved fuel packages are different as well. I worked as a fuel distributor field manager for about 5 years. European fuels are seriously different, to support A-Rod’s statement. I run the Cummins approved Power Service additives in my Ram with the 6.7. Same thing I ran in my power generation role in all the generators, it worked then and now so I trust it! Archoil is not that different, same function different formula. Coke versus Pepsi. Powerstroke guys are more inline with Archoil, Cummins guys more with Power Service. Nice pipes!

Pricey labor there, but I've been a fan of PTT for quite a while and I think it's awesome that a guy can charge a premium price for premium work. Just passed 126k miles in our 2019 F350 and that CP4 has been on my mind for a while.

Just gotta say, I pulled our 2018 Jayco Eagle HT 28.5RSTS Fifth Wheel, GVWR 10,150 with a 2018 F250 6.3L GAS engine up and over the rockies and plenty of places out west, no problem. I just don't understand why anyone wants all the added headaches that go along with a diesel.

Might also ask about replacing the plastic fuel line and filter housing, those can catch fire, I believe a company makes a simple metal line replacement with metal filter set up. I saw another channel do this

Now here was a very well presented video and thank you for including the costs all spelled out in detail. Much much better than your solar etc. video where you never did spell out the costs like you did here. Thumbs up is the bottom line.....and that's what counts 😊😊😊

I would like to know what kind of mileage increase you saw with the setup? Is a slightly larger turbo in the future as well? Also, did you notice any difference in towing up grades? Is there less downshifts and do you maintain more speed going up grades? A more efficient engine is always a big interest especially when towing. I think a egt sensor for towing should be installed as well.

Why did June 16th's email end up in my spam folder? Just a few days ago me and my pups returned from our 2024 Epic AdVANture: 7 weeks, 10,200 miles, 21 states including my 49th, Saguaro, The Rim, Moab, Arches, Ranier, Hood, Coeur d'Alene, Glacier, Pompey's Pillar, Grasslands and, Theodore Roosevelt plus, Tofino, British Columbia! Of course I want a 2024 Summer to Remember shirt!

Nice work. Did you notice any petformance improvements with the pipe and Arch Oil? I'm thinking the fuel pump is a reliability improvement move and does not impact performance.

I have to disagree with the folks who don't like this content. This is absolutely RV and travel related. These upgrades aren't just flashy performance mods. Mods like this will make your truck more reliable when you're towing big travel trailers. By the way, I would suggest you permanently remove the hood so you can show off the intake. That bronze looks amazing!

Lol. Yes, now I'm going to need to remember to clean under the hood too when I wash the truck.
