There are allways nay-sayers on any popular video. Personally, I only give thumbs up for things I like, like this, or I do not care to down-vote.

My thoughts are that we are watching the entire restoration of the planner. Scraping is an important part of that process. Skipping steps just does not feel right.

I will never own a machine, let alone be a machinist. I watch the ones where new things are being made from scratch, appearing out of nowhere. Significantly less interested when surfaces are being sub-mini-micro-optimized, in multiple near-identical passes.

Because it's nothing of the sort, and even if it was, Keith has covered the subject MANY times in the past. In thinking about what most influenced machine accuracy, I'd suggest you look at the influence of rolling-element bearings as opposed to poured babbit bearings. PS: I've been making chips for quite; the first lathe I could use in the early '60s was a flat-belt drive, with babbit bearings in the head stock. It was scraped on nearly all surfaces but If you wanted accuracy, it had nothing to do with the scraping on any of them, it had to do with *your* ability to predict the outcome of the cut depth, the RPM and feed-speed, the edge on cutting tool you ground and several other issues. My newest lathe has rolling element bearings on the head, and even if the ways are not scraped, it is far easier to find the dims I want with this one.

Teresa, I have the same concerns. You are correct in suggesting that the surfaces adjacent to the angled dovetail will influence the measurements across the pins. To explain the phenomenon better, imagine that the adjacent surfaces contain hills and valleys. The hills will raise the pin, thereby causing it to touch the dovetail further outboard, resulting in a wider measurement. Conversely, if the pin rests in a valley of the adjacent surface, the pin will contact the dovetail surface lower down, and thereby be nestled further into the V-shaped crevice. This will result in the pin being further inboard, and hence yield a narrower measurement.

You are correct both sides would impact the measurement across the pins. However the other surfaces were already scraped true. I think you underestimate the accuracy of this machine once its completed and operational. It will be able to hold a tolerance much better than any milling machine Keith will have access to.

Yes, it matters. In the case of this video, the bottoms had already been scraped - it was done in a previous video and both sides were checked to make sure that they were co-planer to one another.

@@MF175mp Also in Swedish: "Laxstjärt" wich means "Salmon-Tail". The Salmon-tail is more or less triangular, where most fish-tails are not, for most of them, if not precicely all, got a more concave trailing edge at the tail-fin. It is an unusual trait among fish, however more common among birds. I suppose one culd say Doves got a more or less triangular tail like Salmons. I understand completely why Germans calls it "Swallow-Tail" and not "Dove-Tail" or "Salmon-Tail". It is just a different way to see it, geometrically. Scribe an unvisible line between the points of a Swallow-tail, now you got a triangle, thus Swallow-tail. Actually The German word might be more striking in this case, since the material more accurately resembles the real ting. However, Dove-Tails or "Lax-Stjärtar" in the woodcraft, includes shapes that physically resembles the tail of a Salmon, or a Dove, mirrored in the material, quite accurately. These shapes are more or less the same, triangels.
