2 Weeks ago I posted my "I ran everyday for a year" video, and I documented more of the mental journey I went on. I had lots of questions about the physical changes, even though it was more of a mental challenge for me I thought it'd be interesting to talk how my body did change throughout the challenge. Enjoy!

Running on consecutive days has always exhausted me, even just 2 or 3 days in a row. I don't understand how anyone can do any sort of daily running streak. 3 or 4 runs a week (every other day) is all my body could handle, in my teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, or 50s. Those times when I tried daily running I got injured almost immediately. The feelings of burnout you describe after almost a year of daily running happened to me right away. It amazes me that you or anyone else can do that.
@Demoniaco
@Demoniaco 9 ай бұрын
She didn't mention how long she was running for. If you're doing 10km every day, yeah it's hard. If it's just 4-5km, it's pretty easy to run every day -- IMO anyway.
@LovelornLoveThorns
@LovelornLoveThorns 6 ай бұрын
Don’t beat yourself up over it. I can’t do it either. People downplay how much genetics have to do with it. Mitochondrial energy output differs from person to person. Also doing anything every day for a year would likely lead to burnout. I do incline walking every other day and it keeps my heart healthy and it’s much easier on my joints than running would be. Maybe try that! You can adjust the incline to go as hard or easy as you want
@joelouden6592
@joelouden6592 6 ай бұрын
@@LovelornLoveThorns Yeah, genetics absolutely influence endurance exercise ability. A woman recently won the Olympic Marathon Trials and it was her FIRST marathon. I've known dedicated, life-long runners who couldn't even finish their first few marathons. I gave up all endurance exercise and, instead, do full-body strength training every other day. I run sprints or do high-intensity bicycling on my off days. I get an immediate energy boost from those activities and no constant, lingering exhaustion like from low-intensity, long-duration "aerobic" exercise. Some people thrive from long-distance running but it's like Kryptonite to me. I hope the exercise "experts" stop forcing endurance training on people as the only way to health and fitness. There's a lot of shaming that goes on in the endurance exercise industry.

I got a breast reduction surgery this summer and after my first six weeks of recovery when I was cleared to go back to normal activities, I started a couch to 5k program (jogging three days a week). Before my surgery I was a 36DDD and always hated being big on top as it made me self conscious, I had pain and bra strap grooving in my shoulders, hated having to double or trip bra for certain kinds of exercise, etc. Now I’m a B/C and it’s so much better. I can find bras easier in stores, don’t need to double or triple bra, etc. In Sept., when I started the couch to 5k plan, I couldn’t jog more than a minute or so without needing to stop (unless jogging in place inside). As of this past Friday and today’s jogging sessions, I was able to jog for 30 minutes without stopping. I have had some good days and also some bad days (had a bad week two weeks ago due to anxiety and depression). I have learned over the past several weeks that I needed to slow down my initial jogging pace, sometimes to just barely jogging. Even with a slow pace, my right calf still likes to burn early on which is annoying. I also am one of those people who gets a runny nose when jogging/doing vigorous/intense workouts outside so I have to try to remember to bring a tissue with me. One of my doctors had suggested training for a 5k to try to help boost my mood and confidence more. She participates in 5ks herself and has been wicked encouraging, supportive, helpful, understanding, and patient with me. On bad days, I have a hard time focusing on the positives and can be very hard on myself at times. My doctor reminds me that I’m doing great (even if I can’t always see it) and to take it one step and one day at a time. Aside from the couch to 5k, my usual go-to exercises of choice are walking, dancing, and hula hooping. I’m still not sure if I’ll ever learn to love running, however at least I’m trying it (though not every day). Same thing goes for strength training. I’ve tried a few Peloton app strength classes however the first one made me feel worse mentally because I couldn’t keep up, had no idea how to do some moves, etc. and the perky instructor, while motivating for others, made me feel like a failure. When I tried jogging afterward, I only got five minutes before needing to stop because I had an anxiety attack. I think for strength, I prefer videos that show you a move and you can pause and try it on your own, at your own pace, then come up with your own routine/circuit.

This is so interesting to see, my experiences are very similar but the changes in my body were more noticeable since I went from competitive bodybuilding to training for a marathon and doing Pilates and Yoga exercises. I still went weight training but I focused on core and upper body strength because I noticed that core strength is key in running efficiently so my upper body leaned out a little but didn’t change that much. My legs however slimmed down noticeably. I went down 3 clothing sizes in pants. Now my legs have more strength endurance but when I do things like riding a bicycle fast or weighted squats, they just don’t have that much of that explosive kind of strength you’d need to do well in those activities. That definitely was different back in my bodybuilding days.

The before and after is too real. For a long time I was running every day. All of the sudden out of nowhere I started storing more fat around my belly and I was like what the heck?! I’ve been running to prevent storing fat as I age. Why is the opposite starting to happen after 7 years? (Started at 20 am now 27)

You need proper diet/nutrition , especially as we get older.

I had the same issue and even my medical check indicated more belly fat as I increased my run mileage . The culprit is lack of sleep, no recovery days and low protein in diet.

Ugh I miss running. I used to do 40-45 miles a week- it made me feel so great and strong. I would do speed workouts 1-2 times a week with varying endurance runs and cross train during the weekend. Meep :(

I have POTS and looking through my resting heart rate for the past year, it used to be in the 70s. You can literally see it plummet when I started taking medication last fall. I wonder how much of my mental health has been affected by that? I never realized it was so high until you mentioned yours being in the 50s lol

Under 100 is technically normal for an adult- depending on size, weight, etc. My HR usually rests at 75/80 so honestly 70 isn't that bad.

Lower the heart rate doesn’t always mean a healthier heart but as an athlete that’s fine. I wouldn’t go far and say that since people could actually have a deadly heart arrhythmias and think a low heart rate is okay. I just wouldn’t want someone to hear that and believe that right off the bat. Love the video. I just wanted to share!

Interesting video! I love running! But I never do it on consecutive days, I feel it's too much. When I was younger running was my only exercise. Nowadays I mix it up with lifting weights to get more definition.

As a guy, running is great for me. I tend to naturally run faster than others for whatever reason at a faster pace, so I like to maintain it. However, it kills muscular gains sometimes. I find I looked better or felt healthier before wasting all those calories on running at times, and health/look is really all I care about; some may say otherwise, but people do care about it no matter how you are feeling or thinking about yourself. Now aesthetics is not strength, and that's obvious, but as I get stronger I also want to look good and maintain everything. Running is great but I feel it gives a 'too skinny' look. Maybe that's great for women but also you need to strike a balance as men,and can't just do all cardio/conditioning, a bit different. I feel it's good to maintain though because maybe you 'have' to do that sometimes, and it's good to be in shape for if/when it's needed. Getting stronger and healthier has been a fun experience.

good comment! As a woman, I'd like to get "the skinnier look" or be able to eat more calories a day (because I am quite short 5'3), so I loveeee eating more and feeling stronger. I do weight training too now, I can't wait to see how my body will change. Do you only do running or also weights?

Well, running isn’t the best for changing your body composition IF you are very thin and lean to begin with. But if you aren’t then running very well can change the way you look drastically.

3:35 if you'd like to try some tech, give red light therapy a shot. I started to get interested in it at the beginning of this year and just started using a panel a month ago. REALLY like it. Mito and Hooga make great panels.

I find doing harder runs on days that I do strength and hit. Recovery days are good for gentle yoga. I hope to bring back doing HITT once a week and strength training at least twice a week.

In 2014, I ran a 5k+ every day. I didn't have any massive weight loss but it definitely helped my conditioning. Someone gave me a bib to an 18 miler and, even though I'd only run the base 5k for a couple months, I completed the 18 miles with more ease than previous marathons. I agree, it does become a mind-f*ck to get up everyday, have only a finite amount of time, and have to hit that mile goal when maybe you want to do (and your body needs) some other type of movement. For anyone with a goal greater than wanting to be able to say you did the miles, consider a movement streak, which is more efficient if planned out efficiently.

I had many ups and downs! I loved high school, but it was also equally a very dark time mentally . I wasn’t popular, but I also wasn’t unpopular if that makes sense haha. Then dealing with sports & home issues was a challenge. But I also did love high school in a lot of ways ☺️ I’ll try and talk more about it one day 🤍

Running is interesting. it is a sport of impact so it is ( in very shor) good for your memory capacity (look it up). It is good for the heart ONLY if you don't do too much every week (max 15km) (my source is from a medical journal provided to GPs... I am no doctor but my dad is).
