B12 Deficiency can be very hard to diagnose, and these 7 signs of Vitamin B12 deficiency can help. Many doctors don't think of B12 deficiency as the cause of these 7 symptoms, but these symptoms can be the canary in the coalmine.
If you have any of these 7 symptoms you should go see your doctor for a full panel of relevant labs, but you might remind your doctor not to forget to check for Vitamin B12.

In some countries you can sign up for any blood tests you want (you’ll have to pay for them from your pocket). It’s much harder to brush off objective data on result sheet. But what most people would want is - being sent to blood tests from doctor, as insurance (if you have one) company will cover the tests.

I have lost hope in practioners the day i was prescribed ciprofloxican. The saying that Drs know better than us is very wrong misleading. There is so much information readily for us to learn about our health even better. I had to go all out to seek ways to minimise the damage cipro has done to my nervous system.

I'm so glad this is being discussed. I lost my 20's to a B12 deficiency that turned out to be genetic. My original doctors said there was no way it could be a B12 deficiency, because I would have lost weight. Ugh. That was the only missing symptom. I finally collapsed and was taken to the ER. I got under the care of an excellent doctor from Nigeria, she was amazing and tested me for nutritional deficiencies. She was the one who discovered I was near death I was so low, despite all the other doctors saying they couldn't find anything wrong, it was all in my head, etc. Now I take the methylated forms of B12 and folate, plus the P-5-P version of B6. It changed my entire life, and guess what? I lost weight after getting treated, because I could move my body again. Don't let anyone say that being on the heavier side means you can't be deficient, it's not true. I hope everyone in these comments gets relief from what ails you, and I'm so glad more people are talking about this insidious and life destroying deficiency!

I hope you don't mind me asking this question. How is a B-12 deficiency genetic? I'm asking because I've had it for many years, and I am not a vegetarian. I have all the symptoms the doctor mentioned. I recall asking a doctor if it could be inherited, and I was told no. No doctor seems to know why I'm low in it. Many years ago, a gastro doctor gave me tests (blood test for intrinsic factor, endoscopy and colonoscopy, which showed no reason for the deficiency). I've taken supplementation on and off, but my levels eventually go down when I stop the supplements. Thank you for whatever info you could give me.

@@lenorapalminteri1002 MTHFR and MTRR genes have variable expression. You don't necessarily need a biopsy to prove the loss of cells, these mutations can be heterozygous or homozygous and have an effect on a spectrum. There are at least 40 different mutations (SNP's) that can happen, so there will be varying degrees of deficiency. Please look up MTHFR and MTRR single nucleotide polymorphisms. One doesn't need the antiquated "Pernicious Anemia" to have deleterious mutations. That is very outdated. I had a severe B12 deficiency without pernicious anemia because I had adequate folate status that stopped the typical megaloblastic anemia found with PA. Adequate folate intake can stop the red blood cells from getting over sized while you're still deficient, so it doesn't show on a blood test. Also, since the various forms of cobalamin can be absorbed in other ways than directly through cells creating intrinsic factor in the stomach, it's far more than just what happens in the stomach. For example, there's a recent finding that cobalamins need other metallothioneins created by adequate zinc and copper intake to pass through the brain blood barrier. Keep in mind that Cyanocobalamin is only one form, I take methylcobalamin, there's adenosyl cobalamin, etc. further down the metabolic line that may work better depending on how you metabolize it. Regular B12 is not a one size fits all solution. Look into Jarrow's Methylcobalamin/Methylfolate/Pyridoxyl-5-Phosophate version of highly absorbable B vitamins.

They finally tested everything and then did the test to see I has pernicious anemia. I am slow recovering and rebuilding my life, but slowly depleting B12 over a life was making me disable. Hopefully this video will also help others advocate for their health. I know B12 can be low for many reason, my situation was not detected for over 20 years, only impacting every system in my body. I am from the UK where we have the National Health, the word health in this instance should be sickness. I asked my doctor if he would test me for B12 and he refused and told me I was wrong even to consider it. I can't go to another doctor, we are stuck with whatever doctor we get, unless we pay for private treatment which very few can afford. If it wasn't for you Dr Ken I would be walking around feeling like I was dying. Changing to a Keto diet and boosting my B12 with a high dose supplement has really improved matters. Being 75, every time I saw a doctor they would tell me that it was my age and these things happen as you grow older. I decided to sod the lot of them and do my own research. Thank you for all your help.

I went to my Doc 10 years ago and told her my fatigue might be B-12 deficiency. She was a new Doc, just finished her residency. So she sent me to a Endocrinologist, who basically refused to do any tests and said I LOOKED fine. So I went back to my Doc and she said she would research the test that my mother had taken to find her B-12 deficiency. It’s called a Methymalonic acid test. My score was 885. When I went in for the results, she said she was surprised that I had the energy to come in. She put me on B-12 injections, and after about 6 weeks, I felt infinitely better. That was 12 years ago, and I still take my B-12. Combined with my hypothyroidism, which my mom also has, and we are both meat eaters, we both feel so much better. I was admitted to hospital with a urine infection that wouldn’t budge. I had to have 2 blood transfusions because I was so badly deficient. They started asking me about symptoms and everything they listed I realised I had and was just putting up with it. I was becoming really breathless when just going upstairs, my tongue was covered in mouth ulcers it was so painful but I never knew it was a sign of B12 deficiency. I was exauhsted all the time. The good news is I didn’t feel immediately great after the blood transfusions but as soon as I got my first B12 injection I felt absolutely amazing. I didn’t realise how sick I was until I started to feel better. My GP completely missed it.

She laughed & called me a hypochondriac- next day the nurse called to tell me I needed to come in for loading doses. Then they didn’t want to tell me why? I had to travel to Western Wa to a GI who diagnosed me with autoimmune atrophic Gastritis- inherited... it’s soooo frustrating when no one understands! Good job on the vid!

I have been a vegetarian for 30 years, and vegetarians are often deficient in B12. About 10 years ago, my hair began falling out. I was also tired and depressed, but I didn’t connect those things together at the time. I got referred to a doctor at the hospital, and he looked at my scalp for a minute, then said that there was nothing to be done and basically, to get used to it. He never even suggested a single explanation for why my hair was falling out. I did my own research, and found that hair loss can be a sign of B12 deficiency, amongst other things. As B12 deficiency was likely because I am vegetarian, I began taking a supplement. My hair stopped falling out and grew back. If I had listened to that doctor, I’d probably be bald now. Plus, the deficiency would have worsened, and I would no doubt have developed many of the symptoms in this video. It could have become very serious indeed.

I was diagnose with trigeminal neuralgia 4 years ago at 29 years old and it progressed extremely fast with medications have little to no effect. A few weeks ago after spending days with little respite from the pain, I accidentally stumbled upon ultra-high dose B12 as a solution. After my very first dose I felt a numbing sensation along the nerve that causes all the pain, and have had only 2 short attacks in the past 3 weeks. It's literally given me my quality of life back.

Members of my female family via our maternal lineage suffer from autoimmune Pernicious Anaemia. My mother's GP refused to treat her routinely, kept taking blood samples following her B12 shots and stopping treatment claiming her blood was 'normal'. My mother went without B12 sometimes for a seven months to a year between. She ended up losing so much weight that she had to be placed onto a drip in hospital (she was basically a skeleton, just around four stone in weight). Her body deteriorated and she was diagnosed with several other conditions. Her GP still kept playing around with her regular shots, despite a hospital consultant (in the U.K.) stating that they were to be followed. Her GP insisted on prescribing antidepressants even though depression was a symptom of her irregularly treated condition. Nine years later she was diagnosed with vascular dementia because my repeated requests to take her declining mental health seriously were ignored. I even printed out medical information regarding B12 and mental health decline with recommendations on how to reverse those for the GP, but she was 'too afraid' to overdose my mother with the vitamin and refused to see the link between dementia and it; even when the Head of Haematology at King's College in London (prestigious) had advised me that high and regular doses could be administered regularly to see if the early onset dementia could be reversed (there is a small window of opportunity), that many GPs treated it wrongly and that any GP who told me there was no link between dementia and B12 deficiency was wrong (that it was well documented). Nothing I begged for was permitted. My mother eventually declined to the point that I could no longer care for her (violent outbursts also being a major issue; I had young children). Two years later, after a suspected stroke, she passed from a pulmonary embolism. The only book which helped to inform me at the time was Sally Pacholock's Could It Be B12. There are so many different deficiencies, particularly today with modern living and diets (many people socially drink a lot, take prescription drugs and eat a substandard diet), which are often the root cause of symptoms diagnosed as something else or which contribute to that. I have known so many people who go to visit their doctor and are not thoroughly investigated and diagnosed with a condition which meds are thrown at. They then deteriorate and require further prescriptions. The entire situation has given me zero faith in most doctors and medicine. It is great to see doctors like this one but we need far, far more. There simply are not enough and the ones most of us encounter are arrogant and apathetic, often refusing to listen and patronise you when you attempt to raise these issues. As a result, the last time I saw a doctor for myself was over thirteen years ago.

@Maria Benetti Hello Maria, I just want to thank you for sharing your story! I'm so very sorry you went through all that and I'm so sorry your mother had to suffer needlessly and I'm sorry for your loss! I suspect this might of been what happened with my mom too. She passed in May of 2020 they claim from early onset dementia. It's infuriating something as simple as a vitamin deficiency is overlooked that could save lives and all the suffering! I want to thank you for telling about the book Could it be B12, by Sally Pacholok. I'm going out today to try and get it as I feel my daughter and I are both vitamin B 12 deficient... a few months ago I emphasized to my daughters Dr. to please try a B12 injection to see if it could help with her severe tiredness, I was shocked when he agreed, but come to find out he told us he was out of the methylcoblamin form and gave her the cheaper cyanocoblamin when we told him it did absolutely nothing! We are now taking a highly recommended sublingual B12 from a functional medicine Dr. and we are both feeling a bit better and we notice if we don't take it. I'm very interested to read the book and learn more! I hope you are doing ok, take care. 😊🙏❤

I found out early in the year that I have a genetic defect that prevents absorption of B6 and B12. Shortly after, you published this video and I immediately ordered the methylated B supplement that you posted. Since then, I found I lost the few sugar cravings I have had despite three years of Keto. I also found a huge decrease in depression, anxiety, and the night terrors that have plagued me since I was two. I recommended the supplement - even gifted her with a bottle - and she told me that in two weeks, she actually felt a difference in mood and energy. I'm amazed at how small fine tuning in my Keto journey produce huge benefits in my life.

Thank you for discussing this, Dr. Berry. I’m sure there are many people who have it, and don’t know it, or won’t do anything to check it out. I’m 77 years old, and I was diagnosed with a B12 deficiency around 20 years ago. My doctor found it thru a blood test during an annual physical. I’ve been taking a B12 injection (cyanocobalamin) every month ever since. The worst symptom I have, is that I become very tired and lethargic. My father also had a B12 deficiency, and I guess I inherited it. Sometimes it comes a day or two before I receive my monthly injection, and sometimes I’m doing well on my injection day. So, it varies. Fortunately, these are the only symptoms I’ve had with my B12 deficiency. Other people may experience even more symptoms. Anyway, I just wanted to concur, and tell those who don’t know, that a B12 deficiency is a real thing, and I’m happy that my doctor found it early. Keep up the good work.

Wow thank you so much for this information, 25 years ago my doctor tried to push Prozac on to me for depression, I ignored his constant attempts for toxic drugs, I read the nutrition literature for vitamin deficiency, what an eye opener. My advise is read, read, read and research your symptoms regarding what you are lacking and for optimal nutrition complete a vitamin questionnaire, this will guide you through your first steps. You will feel the effects after 8 weeks, keep a healthy diary this helps immensely and keeps you on track. Someone once said “if it doesn’t grow from the ground or come from an animal don’t eat it”. If you can Cut out processed food for 12 weeks, you see the difference.

Im like a differnt person; I would say to anyone who believes they hsve B12 deficiency, to go to the doctors and ask for the test, then at least you can rule it out and if it is B12 it is easily and readily treatable... stay well people and remember when there is something wrong our body lets us know x❤

Hello Dr. Berry; my father was diagnosed when he was in his late 40s. He is now 83. I was diagnosed at age 53. We both are European (German/Dutch descent). As a nurse, I worked years in prison mental health where vitamin deficiencies are common. I advise my patients to always pay attention to personality changes: if you do not have the personality you had a child, pay attention as this could be a sign you are ill. With our B12 deficiency, I simply was too exhausted to talk or sing . I also lost my sense of smell and taste to a degree. My toes were somewhat numb. I had a right knee replacement and wow, anesthesia really depleted my B12. I had a personality change after surgery and not know it was likely B12 deficiency: I've now bounced back to baseline. For many years I have been taking 5000mcg of Vit b12. I worked in a high stress job. Helped taking care of Elderly parents. After seeing my new primary Dr. She advised I take a vit b test. It was way high and she advised I switch to 1000mcg. since it was so high I decided to take 500mcg and work up to a 1000mcg. I felt really great with the 5000mcg. Now I have severe depression and am planning to go back to 5000mcg, I had more energy,l blood pressure was normal. I don’t know what to think. I’m 75 year old woman. Will going back to 5000mcg be better for me.

2022 March. I have ALL the symptoms of B12 deficiency. I used to get B12 shots for pernicious anemia but haven't gotten one in years since relocating to Canada. I now have all the symptoms you mention, the biggest being serious numbness and tingling in both my feet. I am not diabetic but I do have non-ischemic cardiomyopathy diagnosed in 2015. The numbness in my feet has come on in the last 2 years. I also have had tinnitus for about 20 years but with B12 shots they went away. My doctor from 20-25 years ago said my body does not manufacture or hold onto B12 which is why I was always anemic. I had a hysterectomy and oophorectomy when I was 33 about 32 years ago so my period, although always really heavy, had nothing to do with my anemia. Thank you for this video. I have ruled out heart based symptoms with recent bloodwork and echocardiogram. My heart is actually in really good shape due to heart meds, exercise and eating right. My husband is diabetic so we eat a diabetic and heart healthy diet.

My body quit absorbing B12 and I got had severe painful ulcers In my mouth. I went to several Dr, dentist, dermatologist and auto immune drs and finally to a hematologist . My white cell count was low and irregular shape. That’s when I finally was properly diagnosed. It was either cancer or B12 deficiency. I had to take lots of injections daily to get my B 12 back up. Now I do it myself every 2 weeks. It has not been a problem any more. 😊

A systematic review, which included 2454 subjects, demonstrated a relationship between low serum levels of vitamin B12 and H pylori infection. In addition, elevated homocysteine levels (a metabolic marker of functionally significant low vitamin B12 levels) have been documented with H pylori infection. Both serum levels of vitamin B12 and homocysteine return to normal following successful eradication of H pylori. H pylori infection may also be associated with autoimmune atrophic gastritis, which is associated with the presence of antibodies toward intrinsic factor, a substance secreted by gastric parietal cells, which enables the body to absorb vitamin B12 in the terminal ileum.

Nocturnal foot, calf and shin cramps too, as well as twitching muscles that were driving me crazy, even with drinking "appropriate" amounts of water. After trying absolutely everything, I started taking B12 prolonged release tablets morning and night, because although the lab tests showed significant b12 deficiency, my doctor didn't understand the numbers being high on the lab results meant a significant deficiency, even though the lab flagged it. Adding in B12 fixed the problem, but the twitches always remind me that I have to keep taking it. My current theory is that age contributes to a reduction in stomach acid which contributes to malabsorption of b12. Also, if I supplement with B100, I continue to cramp, so it's just B12 for now, as there may be something in the other tablet that I am sensitive to. My doctor is lovely but his interest is sports medicine so all he did was show me how to stretch my calf muscles before bed. Good thing Dr. Berry is there to tell us about these things.

This is the first time I've looked it up.. I know my B12 is so low.. I've been to the hospital 3 times, God knows how many times I've been to the Doctors, It's been going on for 6 months & I'm showing all the symptoms.. They keep putting it down to anxiety.. I even requested a water sample to be done 4 months ago. They said I don't need to do one, I took the trust of the doctors.. & just left it.. Week & a half ago I was begging them to do a water sample.. They done one & I got a phone call the same day, Saying I've got microscopic blood in my urine.. It turns out I've got a really bad kidney infection, When it comes to my B12, I've got really bad fatigue, pins & needles.. I've got no energy, I can't focus or concentrate.. My mental health has went through the roof, When I try & sleep the feelings in my brain feels so weird, It's the most horrible thing I've had to experience.. I was 14 stone now I'm just under 11 mat be less.. I feel like skin & bones.. It wasn't till I went to see a ENT specialist because I've got really bad eustachian tubes in my middle ears.. When I went to see the ENT consultant, I told him I've had a really sore tongue for over 4 months.. & told him, I've got really bad ulcers on the side of my tongue & they won't heal.. Then he requested to take blood test for vitamin deficiency.. Few days later it come bacj my be 12 was really really low.. So I've got to take folic acid for 3 months..im confused Because when I went to see another consultant bout my mouth & tongue he said its because your B12 is really low & that's why your ulsers in your mouth are not healing.. & my doctor says your B12 is ok it's your folic acid what is low, So I'm getting told two different things.. It's got to the point I'm so unwell, I don't know who to turn to or speak to.. Because my Doctors are not taking in what I'm saying..

I’ve seen some individuals showing signs of dementia but none of the test are adding up ( no brain plaque, heart and arteries functioning fine, etc.) so the doctors give up and just put the person on meds for dementia/Alzheimer’s. My B12 deficiency symptoms had been written off for years as being related to stress, depression and anxiety... it was only when a new doctor recommended I be tested for organic (physical) causes, and my deficiency was discovered as severe, that I was started on corrective injections - and my depression lifted, the "fog" in my head disappeared and I could think more clearly, my memory improved, and my ability to concentrate was transformed! I felt like a different person - my appetite returned, I was much less irritable, my sleep was much improved, and my energy levels were off the chart in comparison - but the delay in diagnosis meant that the peripheral neuropathy (tingling, numbness etc) was sadly here to stay...
@HaydenMurray
@HaydenMurray 4 жыл бұрын
How quickly after injections did you feel better?
@Tricia_K
@Tricia_K 4 жыл бұрын
@@HaydenMurray I first started noticing a difference in my mood and energy levels within about a week, though ironically enough that might *actually* have been "all in my head" for once - I felt vindicated in that there *was* a medical/physical cause for my symptoms, I had been listened to at last, and I really *hadn't* been making a fuss over nothing! But within I'd say about three weeks of my first "loading" injection, the change was undeniable... I felt better than I had done in years - better, even! - and more like my "old" self again, especially in terms of my energy levels, but also in my appetite and mood - it really was life-changing! Almost three years on, I'm now being maintained on just one injection every two months, and my respect for vitamins has been transformed almost as much as my life has... I recall learning about Vitamin C, scurvy and the like at school, but such tales seemed to belong to a bygone era alongside smallpox and 10-yr old chimney sweeps - a history lesson, and not applicable to modern life? It never really connected with me, that being deficient in a single vitamin - such as B12 - could cause such absolute havoc in the body, with the potential to cause irreparable damage if not corrected - and in the case of B12, that's not only the "headline" risk of peripheral neuropathy, but the effects on your relationships, your work prospects, everything that life has to offer that passes you by, when you feel so ill and snappy and exhausted all the time - I personally even contemplated suicide, and on more than one occasion, but (thankfully) felt exhausted to follow such feelings through...! Are you asking for yourself, have you been diagnosed with a deficiency and/or started on injections? I can only speak on my own experience, and that of others I've chatted to - and I'm definitely no expert, much less a physician! - but it seems that most of us felt a significant improvement in our symptoms by around the three-to-five week mark, or even earlier - though apparently it might take as long as two or three months to feel the full effect? A common thread seems to be though, the struggle to deal with the health and life choices we've made/suffered whilst deficient, as touched on above - I know that I for one still struggle with the bitterness and anger I feel at not being believed/listened to by doctors/friends/family for so long, when I could have been helped by a simple injection, the relationships that have changed as a result, and the changes brought to my outlook on life in general that has dragged up a a lot of stuff dragged up from my past that I still need to deal with - but I realise that such a commonality may well be just the internet talking, with like-minded souls hunting each other out! But if it IS you that's being affected, I send you my very best wishes in moving forward, and hope your experience is - on balance - as positive as my own has been - good luck!❤ [edited for sentence structure, and the much needed addition of paragraphs!]

I cut dairy out of my diet thinking that was the cause of my tinnitus. I've been taking a b complex and I actually think it is helping! Thanks for info!

Many people have B12 deficiencies because their digestive systems cannot assimilate B12 well. Therefore, oral supplements won't help much. I droughted this too, but my doctor insisted I take shots instead since I was already eating a diet high in B12. What a difference it has made in my life!

Correction: Oral supplements are enough after B12 levels come up. I now take a 1,000 mcg tablet once a day. Research has shown that even people with pernicious anemia absorb around 5% of this which is usually enough.

I was DX with severe b12 deficiency. Last summer I was having a hard time with arm arm numbness & tingling, then gradually progressed to my left arm. Thought it was a c-spine injury. Well, things just got worse. Ended up having a an incident that led to an overnight stay in the hospital. They finally figured out it was a B12 deficiency. I had a gastric sleeve approximately 10 years ago. On the path to recovery!

My new doctor ordered all sets of blood tests including to check for B12 because I just felt tired all the time. ALL my tests were negative, glucose was 94 & cholesterol was 202. This doctor is a keeper!
