I’m a therapist, and i hate when they portray DID like this. Most people will have an alter who can be violent, but generally it revolves around violence towards themselves and not other people.

When they bent over backwards to make Grace the villain, after all that footage of Mary being creepy around her. I laughed so hard.

As a person with DID, I am really tired of all these movies implying that I'm a dangerous person. I'm about as dangerous as a depressed kitten.

I have a dear friend with DID and they were so scared to tell us because of how prevalent these kinds of movies are. This kind of media even made them believe they were inherently evil or something before they went to therapy.

Why does it feel like so much lesbian representation is about affairs or some sort of toxicity? Why can’t we have a wholesome lesbian couple??

I think that when people with mental illnesses are portrayed as murders, stalkers, or villains in general, there always comes a point in the portrayal where they aren't seen as real sympathetic people anymore. They become ominous versions of their illness personified and they stay that way until the hero kills them and they become 'normal' again as they die. I just think that building a character beyond 5 traits, that are only there to prove the character is mentally ill, is the simplest way to better how the characters come across.

As someone who is an advocate for mental health in addition to having a mental health disorder, I think there should be a law created that says any movie/tv show that involves any character having any mental health disorder is required to have several mental health professionals and people who have the same mental health disorders as the characters involved with every part of the project, from the scripts to filming and even editing to ensure that the final project is not disrespectful, harmful, or stigmatizing to anyone who has any mental health disorder. Because when you don't have anyone who has either first-hand or professional knowledge of mental health issues involved with movies and tv shows, you end up with something that does nothing but further enforce the stereotypes and stigmas around mental health which causes harm to those of us who do have a mental health disorder. Lifetime has a 25+ movie series called "The Wrong..." and every single movie is terrible. They ALL have Vivica Fox in them for some reason and she basically plays herself in every single role (and usually drops the title of the movie at the climax). I've seen most of them and the worst one so far has been "The Wrong Valentine". It's a really strange rabbit hole of bad movies, you should look into it. As someone who once was very close to someone with DID...one it doesn't work this way and it's disgusting they sexualize (while also treating it as child like at the same time disgustingly) and stigmatize it, two...wtf is this magic charm thing Grace seemingly has and how is it related? Like sure, one might get along with someone in the system more than another or find them attractive personality wise, but it's not like their other personalities have love potion or something.

I have bipolar disorder and I’ve seen TONS of movies that depict us as only violent and angry. We’re not all like that like when I’m manic yeah I may get emotional but most of the time I’m in my bed online shopping for things I really don’t need (I just spent 320 dollars on pillows....send help pls) I make some some stupid decisions but I’m not plotting to kill anyone and I’m so sick of seeing it depicted this way because when I’m dating and I open up about it people want to leave.

Split personality isn't a diagnosis omg 😩 DID/OSDD are already highly stigmatised, and RARE. Not as rare as some believe but still RARE. It's not impossible for three people with DID to meet in person by happenstance, but like. They way they went about it sucks so much

My dad works in mental health and I asked him something similar with how crime and mental health relate. He told me t it is much more common for people with mental disorders to be the victim of violence than being the perpetrator and how many killers etc. don't necessarily have a mental illness. He also said that when a person with a mental illness it's the attacker it is normally in self-defence, like during an episode their paranoia has convinced them whole heartedly with out a shadow of a doubt that their roommate or neighbour is going to or trying to kill them so they have to do something to stop them to save their own life be it killing them first or with a less lethal attack. A lot of the time they would have no recollection of the attack or will stricken with grief and/or guilt just like anyone else would if they found out they did something like that. I feel like media uses mental illness as too much of a scapegoat for violence (villanizing vulnerable people) instead of just showing the fact that some people are terrible with no real reason, like if someone believes that there should be gay conversation therapy, they most like don't have a mental disorder, just a horrible view and little empathy for those they don't understand

Hey, I know about this! Previously known as "multiple personality disorder", DID (dissociative identity disorder) and OSDD (otherwise specified dissociative disorder) (these are the US's terms) are trauma disorders. The name was changed to reflect the fact that they're not actually a personality disorder, but a dissociative disorder formed in childhood. As children, we all have separate "ego states". For example, an infant will have separate states for being hungry or happy or in pain. As we age, these develop and begin to merge to form our identity. DID and OSDD and their counterparts are a result of trauma interfering with this before the age of ~9 years old. When a child goes through trauma and is capable of dissociating to a high degree, these ego states can be essentially "walled off" to deal with the event. This can mean, for example, a specific event can be tied to one of these ego states and then blocked from the rest of the consciousness. People describe these as "amnesiac walls" because they generally disallow memories between "parts". These will continue to stay blocked off and can grow into their own consciousness. People call these "alters" or "parts". People with these disorders often call ourselves "systems". Due to the nature of how these disorders form, we are more likely to be victims of abuse than to perpetuate it. It's a coping technique employed by a child undergoing repeated trauma, abuse, and/or neglect. Getting a diagnosis for this disorder is also very difficult because it exists to protect the brain. Many systems are "covert", meaning a switch between alters is hardly noticeable even to the system. Alters exist to fill rolls needed by the child at the time of forming.

@29:47 That's actually one of the most believable parts of the movie; you would not believe how many times I've been in an interview and they just left the office for like a good 20 minutes and just came back like nothing happened.

So a few years ago in a city a few miles from me, the parents actually abused their 13 children in the way the movie's news article explained... They were starved, caged, sexually abused etc and some had their growth stunted because of it. I found it in poor taste that this is the background story they gave Grace since some of the kids freed are adults and probably suffering from mental trauma. I hope that they don't ever watch this movie.
