Kentucky Rig For Catfish (very simple catfish rig)

How to tie the Kentucky rig for Catfish. This Catfish rig is simple and easy to tie.
The Kentucky rig is a simple rig that gets your bait off the bottom when targeting catfish.
All you need to tie this catfish rig is some strong, abrasion resistant leader material, a high quality circle hook, and a strong swivel.
First, start by tying a large loop in the end of your leader material. This loop is where you attach your weight.
Next, go up the line 1-2 feet, and tie a dropper loop in your catfish rig. Attach your circle hook to this loop.
Next tie on a strong swivel a foot or so up from the dropper loop. Now you just attach the the completed catfish rig to your mainline using your fishing knot of choice.
This rig is most effective when boat fishing for catfish.

The Kentucky and Carolina rig by far are my favorite rigs and I catch the most catfish on them out of any other rig, the Carolina is better for lakes and ponds and the Kentucky is better for rivers.

Good video, i have never heard this called a kentucky rig till now, very common rig for pier fishing as well. Tip: tie another tiny figure eight on the end of your weight loop, makes it a zillion times easier to pull open. If you use light line

I do a similar thing but the difference is when I make the loops instead of putting the hook or weight directly on the loop I use a snap swivel on both. this way I can use any weight that can be used on a sinker slider and it also makes changing out the weights and hooks a lot easier. you just snap it open put the hook on one snap swivel snap the other snap swivel open and then just put the weight on and snap both closed.

What is the advantage of the Kentucky rig compared to Carolina Rig? Would this rig be effective if I use non-live bait? Also I'm using an octopus circle hook, would that be a problem using the rig?

I learned this rig as the “dropper loop” rig and the person who I learned from said this was a rig to catch less catfish and more of everything else in the lake.

It's a good rig you can tie up quickly in a pinch, but it definitely not very snag or tangle resistant.

@ 2:17 I prefer to put the circle hook on the dropper loop from the other side, as you would snell a hook. Rotate the hook 180* at this point in the video, the shown way makes little practical sense.

@@hahmmo When you snell a hook you enter from the hook side. It naturally pulls out of the fish mouth and will catch the corner. Same reason for a dropper loop. From google. “Snell a circle hook with the line entering the eye from the hook-point side,” Sheeder explains. “Pulling tight on a fish, the hook has an increased chance of finding the corner resting spot. You won’t get this [result] if you use a circle with a bent eye or insert your leader through the hook eye from the opposite side.”

Generally you tie the rig, attach it to a barrel swivel, then tie that swivel to the line on your rod.

Snelled will always be better, but it's still pretty effective without doing so.

Can you use a circle 8 knot for the hook leader? Does it make a difference?

I guess you could, but I think the dropper loop is superior for helping hold the hook outwards from the leader.

A dropshot rig has two hooks and is mostly used for saltwater and a Kentucky rig only has one hook and is mostly used for freshwater that's the difference.

i use light line 6lb and under, so i just use surgeons loop knots for both. but yes this is good for bass fishing with smaller hooks and fake plastics for drop shot style also. its really good for rock fishing ocean though because you can tie multiple hooks on and get double ups on one line and fish low and 4-5 foot off bottom or more at same time.

That is an awful lot of faith to be putting into a Larks Head (Cow's Hitch) knot for the hooks eye. Using it for the weight, eh, no biggie there (though it would be advisable to utilize a smaller gauge line for the weight line, in case of weight snagging).

Serious pressure will snap that loop from the hook like that. Ive done it. Solution is to put the loop through the eye and Cris Cris it open the loop and around the hook (polymer) now it won't break.

Yep but with the loop knot to a polymer last garfish I caught 40 lb test 6 ft 6 inches 100 lbs plus. Knot is the weakest point and I've got two. Two pieces to the polymer provide 2X the stretch "shock leader" effect. Hook has two strands holding it to the hook. Believe me. Tough as nails.

I always use the lightest line possible. For cats 20lb and under I always use 15lb test.

Those will work fine unless you are targeting fish 25+lb

It's usually used when boat fishing with chunk bait, but as long as you size the hook properly i don't see why you couldn't use shrimp.

with thick line not really the loops stick out on their own. light line it can but also not really unless you do super long loops. just keep them shorter on lighter line. this set up is good with surgeons knots also for lighter line over dropper loop. like 6lb and under. but also this set up is nice for fishing ocean bottoms because you can do several loops at different intervals up the line and fish the bottom and x amount of feet above bottom at same time. i think dropper loop is probably better also on thicker line.

I use Kentucky rig almost exclusively in the lake I fish. The only time I've ever had one get tangled was using a small live bait. Though a lot of anglers, this guy included, promote the use of a barrel swivel to "...prevent line twist..." I have the opposite effect. Every time I use a swivel, I get line twist. So, there are no swivels in my tackle bag.

Not a whole lot, but generally with a drop shot you tie the hook so it is always pointing straight out, while this rig has a short section of line to give the fish room to eat the bait.

@@FishingExplained Forgive me. I wrote that as I struggled with it. As one gets older you lose the dexterity to use your hands. Turning and twisting, then back feeding it can get confusing. I'm sure it is as you say. Thank you, I enjoy your fishing knot video's.

I wish people used the same names for the same knots. Figure 8 yes, I know the second knot as an alpine butterfly knot and the 3rd is known as a hangman's noose. Stop making up new names, it just confused people.
