Do you want to heat your garage without going deaf? I know I do. I just wanted to Drop a quick comparison between my old torpedo heater and the new Master Radiant forced air kerosene heater I just picked up. Hopefully this helps other people out. My garage is 24x32x12
Update****After a few months mine has proven to be completely unreliable so buyer beware on this one. Great heat source but unreliable unfortunately

Just bought a used one. That is like brand new and the guy had it for a year. And lol he just used outside on his deck last winter. For a party because it covid and he didn't want a lot of people in the house. He said for even being outside in the cold he could not believe how it kept people warm. Now I have it. I am so impressed. I had a 150000 BTU Reddy heater. This master Heats my garage up quicker quieter and cleaner. Never puff smoke when I turn it on. And when I turn it off. I just hope it's reliable. Because there is a lot going inside this unit.

Good test, i like your logic there on reasons to go with the newer tech....It's really something to have such a 'quality of life' feature on tools these days. I didn't hear the sound difference from the audio of your video here... but i can imagine a big reason why could be that mic is using some auto gain control (agc) to purposely compress the output for a wider response range. That sort of takes away from your main selling point in your explanation. The way i would think about the difference in tech here is by understanding that the diameter of the new is about 2 or 3 times the diameter of the older torpedo heater Meaning that in order to meet the same (though slightly better) heat output rating (Btu rating) the new heater only needs 1/3 to 1/2 the mass flow rate, or in this case VELOCITY. I can logically understand that slower moving air yields a lower volume device. So it makes sense the bigger diameter likely is quieter.

I have run the same reddy heater 55,000 btu heater since 1995, that heater has performed flawlessly. I started out running it on k1 kerosene and later switched it to #2 off road diesel. The diesel produces much much less smell than k1, the k1 puts out slightly more heat though. I have it on a plug in thermostat which makes it set and forget, I personally hate having to babysit a heater when trying to get work done. I like the new style radiant heaters but I wonder about long term durability. The old torpedo heaters are tough and easy to repair when needed, I like to buy old ones to repair and sell. I do like the quietness of the new heaters and when I finally wear out my old one I will probably buy one, enjoyed the video thanks for taking the time to put it together for us.

At this point I’m back to using my old torpedo. The new radiant has just been more trouble than it’s worth. You can’t beat the durability of the reddy heater. I love how quiet the new ones are but if they require me to work on them constantly then it’s just not worth it

After running the Remington/Pro temp HH-70-SS and the Mr. heater 70K, you'd think I would know, but I'm still interested in hearing about other people's experiences with these heaters. My Remington quit after 8 years or so...the Mr. heater has a thermostat and I'm still trying to figure out the cooldown cycle with that(If you only have the rocker switch, that makes it easy)...I ran the Mr. Heater outside the garage the first time and it didn't shut off because it was trying to warm the outside to 42 deg., LOL Thanks for your post and your review

I'm a retired drywall business owner and have used above every heater there is I guess. The old Reddy heaters are the best and would last forever. Keep the plug changed or clean and they are gold. The newer heater's on the market have a computer board and are not as reliable. The radiant heater's are awful to fuel and the more you use them the harder they are to start. I have a 30 by 30 garage and this is what I did. I made a metal peace to sit in the bottom of a window and put the space heater outside on a covered platform. I used a normal thermostat mounted on the wall inside from the heater . I ran ducting from the heater to the window. All the sound is outside and the heater draws constant fresh air. I also use diesel fuel in it. .When it warms up I undo three screws and put the heater back in the garage in storage for the summer..55000 btu.

I bought the dyna glo deluxe 9-18-18 it's quiet compared to my old torpedo i bought in 1990 that still works today.ran the dyna glo had problems starting in cold weather smoking black smoke all over, then it would run for 5 minutes and shut down, took apart to clean, photo sensor, filter, spark igniter ,numerous times, still the same.i had it for 2 years and threw it to the curb.so for now I'm taking my old remington heartier out of retirement

In this video, it sounds like your torpedo heater's fan bearings are probably shot, which makes it sound louder than it should. The underlying combustion sound seems to be about the same with the torpedo heater having a more throaty and pleasant sound.

Regardless, it's still loud. I was gonna buy the Master brand at Tractor supply, but it had way too many bad reviews. I ended up buying the Dyna Glo Deluxe, heats up my 24x25 uninsulated shop in less than 10 minutes, even with the door open. I can leave the door open, and work very comfortably. I plan to insulate my shop, then run the torpedo heater to heat it up fast, then turn on an electric heater to keep it warm with no noise. If it starts to get cold, flip on the torpedo for a couple minutes. I like to listen to music while i weld , so i like it quiet.

Appreciate the input. The master does have bad reviews and I have had issues with mine since this review. That why I recommend getting a service plan if people buy it. As far as noise I have to say yes..they still are noisy but nowhere near as noisy as my old torpedo so I guess it’s personal opinion. Also thanks for the Dynamic glo suggestion. I looked at them as well. Probably should have went with that one.

I run mine on diesel fuel instead of kerosene. It burns cleaner than kerosene, no smoke or smell. Diesel puts out more BTUs than kerosene and it's alot cheaper too! My carbon monoxide detector has never gone off. I don't keep any door or windows open, eveything is sealed tight. It only has to run about 15 - 20 minutes to heat the shop then it shuts down.

@@pauliebots I ran kerosene in my smaller one (50,000 BTU) and didn't like the smell, so I run my new one (80,000 BTU) on straight diesel and there's a little puff of smoke when it comes on cold, but burns clean after that. I do smell the diesel when it first fires up, which I don't mind, but no smell after that.

If you use carburetor cleaner or other solvents and paint, how bad is the smell from the burning of them through the heater? I have been using torpedo heaters for 30+ years and they are terrible in this respect and my biggest complaint. Maybe I need to go to a system that uses fresh air to the burner. What are your thoughts?

My 25 year old Craftsman torpedo runs on diesel and will heat up my shop in 30 minutes. Shop is 60W X 50 D X 16 high. So 3000 sq ft. It is noisey and smokey if it doesn't stay lit. A buddy gave me one of the Master Heaters like the yellow one you have, but it will not start on diesel to save it's life. Kerosene here is 2X the price of diesel. Any of you folks have any tips on how to make the Master heater to work on diesel? Don't really car about the noise, I'm hard of hearing anyway, but the old Craftsman Torpedo is getting to be a pain to start now a days. Hoping to be able to run both heaters on differenty sides of the shop and keep the temps consistant.

From what I understand these aren’t a multi fuel and don’t tolerate diesel at all. They will be difficult if not impossible to run. I’m not sure if there is anything you could change to make it more tolerant of diesel but as far as I know Kero is the only thing they will properly run on.
