Forced air vs radiant kerosene shop heater ... WOW

Bought the forced air torpedo or aka salamander heater with 80.000 btu a couple of years ago to keep the shop warm during the cold winter months ... it works good but got tired of that thing being so loud cant hear someone talk cant hear your radio or anything else for that matter.
So I found this 70.000 btu kerosene radiant heater and WOW ... its quiet and better on fuel and I almost want to say better or more heat or should I say different heat.
The salamander cost around $200 and the Mr Heater around $260 id say well worth the extra $60
So what do you think? Love it ? Hate it? Share your opinion.

FYI an Inkbird ITC-308 thermostat to control the temp. Obviously not the Mr Heater. One option for you is a regular LP shop heater. That gives you thermostat control of the temp. Gas is a much better heat source and cheaper to run than anything electric. Maintaining the temp is always more efficient than heating it daily then shut down. Once that concrete warms up it stays warm for a long period, but it will take 24-48hrs to warm up. I was able to find an old used furnace that was a take out, from a furnace Co, they have a stack of em they loan contractors to temp heat buildings in the winter. I easily handed over $100 for it. Pipe a gas line power and a PVC vent, it's also 92% efficiency. It does have a drain hose that I just let it drain into a bucket cuz it's on a shelf 5' off the floor giving me storage under it. They can bend up a basic plenum to direct the air 90 out the front instead of straight up. Switch it over for LP if you need too.

@@CountryMileGarage what did you do to make the thermostat work better. I have the same heater that should arrive today and have seen other people say that the thermostat is not that great

@@gregharrison7631 if you take the back cover off you'll see the wires and on the end it has a white plastic cover on it that's the thermostat. Carefully cut the zip ties and reroute it and let it come out with plug-in wire instead of where the fuel lines and filter are. And let it stick out at least a inch. Now it spot on only 3-4° difference with my wall thermostat. So if the wall reads 55° at the heater it reads 52°

You maxed out your temp reader. Anything cherry red is well over 1000 F and closer to 1500 F.

Good information. I’ve bee thinking about getting a salamander just to warm my shop instead of using my wood stove for a quick warm up. That smaller one fits the bill. Thanks.

Neither one is a radiant heater. I want to see a head to head comparison between a radiant and forced air.

It is definitely a radiant heater opposed to a forced air torpedo type as the noisier ones……..with these smaller ones you do still get a small air seen in front whereas if you go to something like the VAL6 there is nothing, you can drop a feather in front on mine well not too close to the radiant heater panel though.

Why would it break the plate? I mean the fan is cooling it faster. If you don't want a material to break you cool it slower. I don't think that is what the fan is for. Maybe a safety feature.

If I remember correctly in the manual it said it's a cool down function to get longevity out of the plate and the nozzle. Thank you for watching

Do they create condensation like the propane burners.

I haven't experienced anything like that. Condensation has part to do with the let's say your wrenches are cold and when you heat the shop there's what you can call condensation same with glasses going from cold to warm but that is it. I keep my shop at 40° when not there and heat it up to about 52° or so. So no problem for me on that

No. The condensation in propane comes from water vapor in the fuel. It's just part of the deal. Natural gas and butane have the same problem. But there's no water in kerosene/jet fuel.

Sounds good do they still smell and where I live in Tn it’s very hard to buy kerosene the gas stations don’t sell it anymore

No smell that I noticed anyway. I run regular diesel from the pump from day one. Hope this helps and thank you for watching

How are the fumes? I bought a Dewalt and honestly I can not understand how anyone could stand it. I understand it needs to be vented, I actually let it burn for 2-3 hours outside and it was just as bad. Really wanted it to work too.

Fumes are not a problem with this heater. This winter we had heating trouble and used it inside the house for two days to keep us warm and it did great. I have customers that see this thing in action in my shop and can't believe it doesn't smell like normal diesel heaters do and bought one for them self's and love it. Just be aware of the E3 error code on these but I did a video on that on how to by pass that ... thank you for watching, hope this helps

I suspect the ceramic "plate" is creating positive ions as the hot air is forced through it thus producing the perception of "feeling warmer".

The reason it feels warmer is because the old heater is a forced air heater, so if you aren't standing directly in that air stream, you aren't feeling the heat. If you open the doors, all the heat is gone with the wind. The new heater is a radiant heater. There is no air blowing out the front, it is radiating heat in all directions from that disk. If you can see the disk, the radiant heat is hitting you. Difference between standing next to an hvac vent or standing next to a campfire. Big difference. Especially if you don't have walls or open the doors ever. Radiant heat heats the objects in the space, not the air. The objects then heat the air later. If the air leaves, all the objects are still being heated exactly the same even in a stiff wind.

@@CharlieIIpics The difference between the heater and a campfire??? That's a BTU difference, the campfire is likely hundreds of BTU's, yes you will feel the wind blowing it towards you or away from you. But primarily it's a huge high btu open flame...

@@mrmotofy I have numerous forced air heaters of the 200k+ btu sizes and one diesel powered radiant heater at about 100k btu. If you stand directly in the path of the forced air heater, you are warm, anywhere else, you are not. If the room is not fully closed in, you are cold with the forced air heater after an infinite amount of time. The radiant heater will warm an area (by heating the OBJECTS) in a matter of minutes whether or not you are indoors or outdoors with or without wind. Air is not needed for the heat transfer, as it is RADIANT heat... like a campfire, lol. Measure the BTU output of a campfire and replicate that with forced air heat and then go stand next to both in a 10mph breeze. And no, the radiant heat from the campfire is not blown by wind direction, only the air circulating primarily out the top. That HEAT you feel by a fire is the radiant heat sir. That is precisely why fire feels entirely different than forced air heat, and why radiant heaters are so often used outdoors. Go through a chic-fil-a drive through or nearly any outdoor restaurant dining area and count the radiant heaters. It is a different mode of heat transfer. It feels much different and in many cases, works much better. A single point heater is often one of those places. Especially if used in an outdoor or drafty area where air movement is uncontrolled.

The heater should continue a cooling cycle when the switch is used to turn it off…..if not then you have a fault……it just must not be turned off at the mains plug that is all but if the electronics are good then it should run on fan only for about 5 minutes when switched off at the switch on the heater……

It's kerosene or diesel and no it doesn't give you a big diesel cloud when it starts up like a salamander would and you can't really smell it

With the old noisey heaters... Could you not just put it outside and run a hose or ducting into the shop? Or am I lacking understanding?

Then you will have to worry about fuel yelling up, you'll need to cut a hole in the wall for duct work and with heavy snow you have to clear it off every time lol just to name a few things. Thank you for watching

I worked in the telecom industry for 38 years, some of which was spent splicing cable in the winter... We would put up a tent, and run a ventilator hose in from a propane fuelled "Mopeco" heater with fan unit. They worked great... Although in really cold weather the propane would freeze. Then we had a "Bottle Heater" All that to say, I would just fashion a wood adapter flange for a window and run a ventilator hose to it. Gonna give it a try and report back.

Is there some way to tie in a line stat in (series) with the on board stat or switch for remote sensing . I believe this may still allow for the post purge. ?

With a inline thermostat you cut the power completely off so when it shuts off there's no after cool off and you'll burn the nozzle off over time

@@CountryMileGarage Not saying shutting off the power to the whole unit, only cutting off the power to the on board switch , which would be no different than turning the switch off, still allowing for the after cool. ( this may require some internal wiring modification) . After looking at the wiring diagram in my manual , it is theoretically possible) I am planning on trying this on my Master unit, I will let you know if I can correct what you referred to at 2:55 in your video. I just bought mine today for a 24X30 shop . Thanks for posting by the way.

@@CountryMileGarage It's nice. Heats my 2 garage fast. It actually gets too hot. So I just turn it off. Just the cool cycle is to long. Overall I like it, had it for 3 years and so far so good.

These don't have very good reviews for some reason. I'd go another route. That Craftsman torpedo heater you have SCREAMS like a cat on fire! Good god that thing is loud. I have an 80,000 btu Dyno Glo that's quiet compared to that thing.
