In this episode of SDP Talks, William Clouston is joined by Kevin Hickson, Senior Lecturer in British Politics at the University of Liverpool and former SDP Chairman.
Kevin and William discuss two influential figures in the Labour party of the 1970s and 80s - Peter Shore, and James Callaghan. Along with discussing the careers and legacies of Shore and Callaghan, Kevin and William also explore ideas or political flash-points from their time that have reemerged in today's political climate.

Fascinating to hear that Callaghan and Healey did not believe in monetarism in 1976 but felt they had to pretend to believe in it to impress the markets. It would also be interesting to know, regardless of whether the Treasury figures were right or wrong, why they felt they had to go to the IMF for a loan when we had our own sovereign issuer of currency the Bank of England. Can anyone explain this please?

What is the SDP strategy to become a genuine contender? What parts of the country are you going to focus on to get some traction?

The Labour party's "strong patriotic tradition" as you call it is shown up for what it is very well by Peter Hitchens in 'the Abolition of Britain', as mere lip service. The high numbers of Tory MPs compared with Labour who volunteered to serve in WW1 and WW2 is a great example he used.

Peter ‘Weed turns people into terrorists’ Hitchens. He’s not a bad guy really but he isn’t someone whose ideology I would aspire to personally even if he is right once a blue moon. Also there was less on the frontlines true, that’s because they were in retained professions and too busy dying in the factories and the steels mills and the mines to go to the frontline and die there instead.

Haven’t read that yet But Labour were right to oppose the war so why volunteer to fight in a war you object too. But Peter himself has called the The Great War the worst mistake in foreign policy history and that of the country are you reading his analysis right? As the Tories pushed for war its logical they’d volunteer.

@@seanmoran6510 I agree to a point but I’m of the opinion that both wars were unavoidable ultimately . Maybe the points at which Britain felt the need to enter those conflicts are debatable, ie guaranteeing Poland’s borders in particular being a bad call. From that point onwards the whole idea of conceintious objection is a total cop out, an early form of virtue signalling from a safe distance.
