Thank you, Crow. Your encouragements are always so welcome, but this one hits particularly close to home. You're so right, and I hope people take it to heart. I'm going to outline my story below, in case it might help someone else figure out what could be going on with them. It's taken me until my forties to figure out what's wrong with me, and it's only been the last five years or so that I've had medical people take me seriously. The internet has been a huge help in looking into stuff myself, and then taking it to my practitioner. If you feel something is not right, that's always valid. It may be physical, psychological, situational, or a complex mix of those. Just because it's complex or vague, doesn't mean it's not a problem that needs to be addressed. Stress can cause complaints, yes. But those are still physical complaints, and need to be addressed. Even purely mental health problems are physical themselves (brain and hormones) and will affect your body. Everyone is tired yes, but not all the time, and if you can't function like you'd want to, then you deserve to be helped. Menstrual cycles can affect (mental) health, yes, but that doesn't mean you should just accept it. You deserve to be helped, and live a happy life. I've found especially complaints of women are still often either not taken seriously or met with lack of knowledge (and my guess is that people of colour face challenges as well). I'm a scientist myself, so I've always looked for answers within scientifically-supported medicine. But I can totally see why so many women end up in the alternative medicine scene, because it's darn hard to get proper help if your complaints don't fit the standard (often white male) mold. In the end, in my case, it turned out to be a mix of ADHD (women can show very atypical symptoms, which I found in the book So you mean I'm not Lazy Stupid or Crazy), sleep apneu (normally only diagnosed in overweight men over 50 whose symptoms have become extreme enough to fit the outdated criteria, when in fact everyone can have it but will not be diagnosed due to these outdated criteria), and a chronic but not life-threatening heart condition (mix of arrhythmia and POTS), that has not been found until now because my heart beat was always fast and irregular but not fast and irregular enough (meaning it won't kill me and who cares if it messes up my entire life). All of these complaints can be conflated with depression, anxiety, etc. They can also be accompanied by these issues, because who wouldn't be sad and stressed if mind and body don't cooperate with you. Mix that with being a woman with a menstrual cycle (which can affect ADHD symptoms and medication, sleep quality, and increase problems caused by arrhythmia and POTS), who had a child (which increased problems for all these issues), and who has an-above average IQ (which can hide problems because of increased ability to compensate). The latter also often shows differently in women, by the way, so many high-functioning women turn into low-functioning women because their unique abilities cannot be applied. Because so much was wrong, I didn't know where to start. Plus, several of my issues cause overwhelm and apathy, which also made it very hard to initiate a doctor's visit. In the end, I found a GP who was willing to start figuring this out with me. We kicked it off with standard blood tests, and took it from there. I kept reading up and thinking things through, and bit by bit we unraveled this whole dang web. But I had to be the one to keep things going, I had to insist I wanted answers and solutions, because many specialists were only interested in a yes/no outcome within a very tight framework. If their test didn't result in a clear-cut solution, they bailed. It's tough to find creative people who want to figure this out, so you've got to be that person yourself and then find people who will listen and do the tests. So if you're always tired, if you feel your brain is slacking off, if you feel hopeless and stressed and sad, if you can't get off the couch or put of bed, if you don't know how others manage to lead a regular life while also brushing their teeth everyday because that frankly seems impossible, there is probably something wrong. It may be something small (like vitamin D deficiency), it may be big, or complex, but you always deserve help. And you may not be able to initiate that first doctor's appointment today, but hopefully you have a less bad day soon and then maybe you can look up the phone number or even better e-mail address. Or ask someone to do it for you. And the next less bad day you can maybe set up an appointment. Or ask someone else to do it. And even if you can't make a list, then you can tell the doctor "I dont know, everything is wrong, I need help, can we start with blood tests?" You deserve to be happy, you deserve to live a life. Even if everything is impossible right now, you may be able to get there one little step at a time. Don't be afraid to ask for help, don't be afraid to insist you need help. You deserve help.
