Imagine saving an entire marine ecosystem by protecting an inconspicuous and "un-cute" animal you've never even heard of, says Center for Coastal Studies marine biologist Agnes Mittermayr in a funny and illuminating conservation talk. We are all connected, algae to humans to worms, by being part of one big food web and we can save whole ecosystems by protecting critical keystone species -- some of which have no other value. coastalstudies.org #foodweb #marinebiology #centerforcoastalstudies #amphipods #agnesmittermayr #keystonespecies #savetheinvertibrates #TEDxPtown #TEDxProvincetown #CapeCod #Provincetown #ecosystem #invertebrates #conservation Agnes Mittermayr, a marine ecologist at the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown, explains how we are facing biodiversity loss faster than we can name the species -- and what impacts that has on our food web. #foodweb #marinebiology #amphipods #agnesmittermayr #keystonespecies #savetheinvertibrates #TEDxPtown #TEDxProvincetown #CapeCod #Provincetown #centerforcoastalstudies #ecosystem #invertebrates #conservation This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Weirdly, I had high hopes for this topic, for this speaker. Like, "What if we break a link in the food chain? How would that go? Early signs of a catastrophe? What potential links are currently threatened?" (And I know that's rather selfish, but because we humans have been so thoroughly self-possessed, we've thrived.) Anyway, I got halfway through this and there were repeated jokes against vegans, and it just didn't seem to be going the way I thought it would go. So I'm down here, and now I'm off to another cat video!
