My first mountain bike was an Apollo Atomic in 1990 when I was 13. Did the South Downs Way numerous times on it as a teenager. Bomb proof and super reliable and I think it was only 200 quid.

@@benasquith26 Im not sure where youre from but here in Whistler even in snow my shimano V brake will stop you even in a hill, People are forgetting that the rim is just a hollow disc and will work more efficiently due to the fact that its far from the center of a rotating mass. The main reason for disc brakes are lever feel on the fingers(modulation) . I love all systems i have XT and SLX disc on my Enduro and and hartail. But science is still there when it comes to rotating mass.

Did hit the "like" when you defended Ibis. Good job. If the bikes are to expensive, buy second hand. Did that all my life up to now. Build all my bikes myself, now i treated my self to a new Mondraker F-Podium. Might be the first and last bike i bought stock. Because i like it. :)

On the subject of kids bikes, I have been shopping around for my nephew's first proper MTB. I think the most cost effective kids bikes are the ones with bigger tyres (2.6 inch). This is because until you get quite high up in the price point, the suspension is next to no good because they're always sprung too hard for the light weight of the kids that are riding them. So the way to get around this is the big volume tyre and run it at low pressures to act as suspension. Although the lighter bikes like Isla bikes, early riders and frog bikes are really good, as soon as you get to any rough terrain, kids are not usually strong even to muscle the bike through the rocks where the bigger tyres will soak up some of the bumps to stop them stalling too much. I look forward to seeing more on this and other peoples opinions!!

My kids aged 5 and 7 have took a pretty keen interest into mtb with me so after a year on rigid orbea mx16 and mx20 I've got them the new orbea laufey 20 and 24 on the way for Christmas. 2.5" tyres, air forks, dropper, clutch mech etc. Gonna be fun!

Really gotta say, I love some of those high priced bikes by specialized, santa cruz and so on. But after building up a nukeproof reactor as my first full suspension bike and riding it for some time now, I cannot justify spending so much more money on a bike when my build already costed around 3500euro. Every single scratch digs right into my heart and I am happy to not have spent so much more. But I guess I am being too sensitive :D

My little ripper Harrison is 5 yrs, we got him an Early Rider Belter 16 that he loves. He instantly took to it, so light it handles really well. So worth the investment. He’s almost ready for 20 inch now and the choice is incredible! He’s constantly demanding to go riding at Swinley or QECP which is perfect for me! Andy on Hayling Island 🤘🏻we’d really appreciate some more kids riding content! Thanks!

Hi! Awesome channel! I have learned so much from your channel making the switch from BMX to MTB 6mos ago. QQ: I have a 27.5 hardtail I removed the entry level shocks and replaced it with a carbon tapered fork (I ride urban streets 90% of the time). I was curious if any studies are floating around, to advise how hard I should or shouldn't push them. I am an aggressive rider and tend to find myself having to jump, and or break hard to get myself out of trouble, when bombing into situations that I probably shouldn't. This is my first time running ridged carbon forks & HB, so I have been gradually increasing my intensity with this setup.as my trust/confidence increases. Just want to get an idea of my limitations..

It’s great that kids bikes have come a long way since my Raleigh Striker in the early 80’s. But some of them cost nearly as much as my bike! I’m 6’2” and it appears my son at 9 is determined to catch me up. He’s already outgrown his 20” wheel hard tail. Something you’ll soon be familiar with Doddy I’m sure. Can you recommend a good 24” wheel for less than £300 as I think he’ll outgrow that in no time too! Love the show. Learning so much.

I’m Dad to 2 little rippers, aged 4 and 18 months. The kids bikes available now is impressive, but possibly overkill of the youngest riders that will probably be on them for less than a year. The coolest bikes you missed are the “Hope Academy” bikes - rental bikes dripping in Hope kit. However, there always seems to be a waiting list. As someone who likes working on bikes, I have been buying second hand bikes and doing them up for my sons. As an Orange fan, I would love the Orange balance bike for my youngest son, but they have already sold out, and he already has 2 bikes…

My 5yr old absolutely loves his Hoy Bonaly this past year. Very light, about 6kg’s and very well thought out. Good value too - he needs pedals but £60 for the Numeproof is a bit steep. Also, RaceFace Chester composite pedals have been the best pedals I’ve ever had, and at £40, brilliant value. I’ll never ride anything other than composite 4yrs later and unless the DMR’s are a big step up, not worth the additional cost; or am I wrong? Love the show.

Squish bikes! Awesome bikes for the money. We had orbea and squish side by side at the exeter julian house shop. The squish is way lighter and better value. Possibly better than frog and isla. In the same way they are designed for kids with small person parts and crazy light, but unlike some other brands the parts are easy to find when you do need them. We bought a fleet for work, they are way better than the old ridgebacks we have!

The V12’s have always been a perfect kids pedal from size 13 to current size 2. Just replace the pins with proper terror pins for agressive riding for vault levels of grip. ODI and Spank both do 90mm lock on grips leaving more room for controls. If you do UK (shuttle) uplift though the softer compounds don’t last long. Sadly the adult NP saddles suffer the dreaded peel (delamination). Non pivotal Kevlar BMX race saddles are the best we found especially for the abuse kids give them.

I have recently bought a pair of the small Crank brothers stamp 1 pedals. I actually find these pedals comfortable. I also have a set on the last version of the Shimano Saint pedals. I could not get on with them. My feet used to keep going numb when I used them. To get extra grip as I have used clipless pedals for at least 25 years. I removed the shim from under all the pins. God is that a boring job? I usually only did one ride using the Shimano pedals. Then put my clipless pedals back on. The Stamp pedals don't make my feet numb. I still feel like I have some control over the bike. I haven't changed to longer pins. I'm still nervous about lifting my back wheel, in case I slip a pedal and take a chunk out of my shim.

I am an engineer at heart , I can't help but notice the love affair with shock absorbers. In this instance what is to be achieved has been forgotten and a religion based around the holy shock has begun. Imagine a bottom bracket based on the trust fork and the downtube and rear triangle set up like a dead blow hammer, the shock now will only need to provide stability from impact and maintaining direction. This would mean less travel is required making for a smoother transition along the trail. Shocks are awesome and have broken boundaries but not the only answer for future design. Tyres and frame geometry are already taking up the slack that shocks can not provide.

no YOUR WRONG! there doddy dmr are simply copys of shimano dx pedals which were always available in 9 /16th in order to fit the super cool dx 3 ppiece cranks.that said they took the design further with the v12 surpassing shimanos original design ! and in fact i run a setof mag v12s with tit axles very nice and very light.

Kids bikes have come a long way since my children were young... I had bikes custom made (choice of paint and other accessories) to try and get something good quality for xmas presents... there were no decent 20" forks available, but brakes, gears etc were all good for the day... my children (and even 10 year od me) would have been over the moon to have an electric bike like we have available these days... In 20 years, kids hover bikes will be just another toy, but today, seem far enough into the future that they are only on people's wish lists...

Hi Doddy, thanks for the item about the children’s bikes. From the look in your eyes it seems that you can’t wait till you can get the little Doddy on his own bike! You already touched on it lightly when mentioning the smaller grips, but could you please give some attention to the biomechanics of children bikes. It is often overlooked by parents, but the geometry and components on (especially cheaper) children bicycles are often terrible. Crank arms that are too long, bottom brackets that are too wide...

Just came across this video. I'm struggling to find decent protection gear for kids at "sensible" prices. Stuff like knee and shin protection, back and chest protection, prices are really expensive for something kids will only be able to use for one season. Any suggestions?

#AskGMBNTech Hi Doddy i have a scott ransom medium with fox 36's and recently tried my mates set of rockshock lyriks and found the valving set up to be way stiffer than my fox's. His bike is an Intense Carbine XL, it had me wondering do manufacturers get different valving set ups in their suspension for the different frame sizes like a stiffer setting for their L and XL and something softer for the M and S models. or is this just the difference in brands?
