In the series it's a huge sense of pride for Hank that he knows how to grill burgers or steaks. The fact that he realized the steaks were overcooked hit him hard because that doesn't ordinarily happen to him.. and somehow ALL of the steaks were overcooked.

​@@AddableStone13 I hate that because the genetic modifications of those crops are protected by patents, if pollen from those modified crops "contaminates" your unmodified crops from which you get seeds for the next season the company can sue you even though you didn't mean to. Many farmers gave up their way of life because they could not deal with these demands.

The downside to living in a huge country like the US or Canada where most of your food has to be able to stay fresh when being shipped across the country. All the more reason to grow your own or support local farmers and farmers markets.

I think the difference is that the pre-wrapped meat is select grade and usually goes to low tier stores. The places with a butcher counter tend to offer choice and prime. But if you buy a premium steak like wagyu, it will probably come prewrapped too. And frozen. Still excellent.

I don’t grill much, I was raised on wood and we smoked everything we could, but all the same a good cut of meat is significantly better than a prewrapped one. For my money, HEB in Texas has the best meat selection of all grocery stores. It’s good, but It can’t compete with a butcher shop that gets fresh meat delivered weekly. There’s a small butcher shop in my town, place is old as hell and beat to shit on the outside, you’d never want to step inside. But when you go on and look behind the counter and see their work space, it’s all pristine counter tops and cutlery. They invest heavily in the meat and the space they work in, and that’s all. It’s a family shop too, a geezer and two sons own it, sometimes during summer you’ll see a teenage guy in there. They are cool af, salt of the earth people, they’ll ask you how you plan on making it, ask you how it came out last time, give you recommendations on what meats look best that week, let you place a future order to pick up and hold off a nice cut. Granted, I know them well enough, grew up as a kid using that butcher with my dad so they know my family. I wouldn’t say we are friends, just faithful customers and they treat us as such.

​@grugnotice7746 I actually get my wagyu fresh cut by an actual butcher and god I never want USA steak prewrapped again. I only go to butchers for myself everyone else, that aren't the good guest, get in my opinion the okay steak and the good guest get high quality steak

Depends on where you live. I can get good tomatoes, just not at the grocery store. There's a produce stand near my home that is all local.

My mom used to plant tomatoes in our garden and they were smaller than the usual tomatoes 🍅 but taste so good

My grandpa made a pasta sauce out of heirloom tomatoes he’d grown himself. It was literally just fettuccine noodles and tomato sauce, and it’s still the best pasta dish I’ve ever had.

There are two things on this planet. Organic, and inorganic. Rocks and such are inorganic. Everything else is organic.

They don't force feed them, they just give them all the feed they want. Gets them big for more meat and adds more fat. Different flavor too. In fact, I think Hank actually would have turned his nose up at the co-op steak at first since it tastes so different and would be much smaller.

They found out that on average meat produce using 1920s methods were smaller by a quarter but at the same time had a higher nutritional count compared to their 1990 raised breathers. In short the head researcher stated that while the food has gotten bigger, the nutritional value has heavily taken a hit. Eventually its with fear that mass produced meat products will suffer some type of nutritional collapse. If the meat supply is slowly losing its nutritional value..then it's safe to say that the food we are consuming heading towards junk food status.

There used to be heavy competition for quality beef cows when there were more meat packers trying to outbid each other. The ranchers used to be able to make a good living for the fruits of their labour. But after consolidation it reduces competition for bidding and the ranchers receive much less money for their work. You would think we would atleast see a price dip at the super market but the meat packers instead just raised the price over a period of time for larger profit margins at the expense of both the consumers and the ranchers raising the cattle in the first place.

When I moved to my town of 200K people during the era of KotH it had three butcher shops. Ten years later it had one. Five years later it had none. Now it has two. But I am pretty sure that only one of them actually breaks beef (they offer live animal processing). The other gets it in cryovac roasts like the supermarket, but carries only prime stuff. Don't know how big Arlen was supposed to be but I could see Hank needing to drive to DFW to see a real butcher, though he would have had his choice of 20 or 30.

@@grugnotice7746 Unfortunately this happened with not only meat. I remember there was a local(kiosk) who cooks cakes, they were very tasty, after 17 years they were demolished, unfortunately they could not survive stupid laws.

Well, the clerk did say "we don't actually have a head butcher anymore, our meat comes pre wrapped". That would imply that the Mega-Lo Mart had a butcher when Hank bought steaks prior to yesterday, but stopped after that (or maybe they had enough of a supply that Hank didn't notice right away).

This episode was decades ago when walmart was still relatively new in some places and people didn't realize what it really was

I personally believe that Megalow had gotten rid of their butchers and Hank didn't notice until the beef became worse. I used to eat these logs of ground beef from Stater Bros. until the meat became so bad that I switched to these pre packed patties that are twice the price but just so delicious. It's a sad reality, but one most of us have seen in our lifetimes; the quality of meat keeps going down in national grocery chains...

Heh, I remember my dad telling me my Grandma would cook bacon to the point that it was so well done it was practically burnt, but it's because my grandpa liked it that way.

Same here, my mom didn't cook meat so much as she cremated it. It took 20 years living on my own to work my way down to a medium-rare steak, but that's too chewy for me so I settled on just barely medium.

The Co Op ends up prospering (Mostly due to Hank's tutelage on how to run a business more efficiently). However, the Mega Lo Mart takes notice of this and ends up buying the Co Op, Hank and Appleseed[the man who introduced Hank to the Co Op] tried to protest this, confident that the others would side with them and refuse to sell, but they end up choosing to take up Mega Lo Mart on their offer and split the money from the sale, soon after that, the Co Op is run just like any other Mega Lo Mart store. That night Hank and Appleseed concoct a plan to steal some cows from the farm the Co Op did business with and try to care for and breed them in Hank's backyard. While they were successful in stealing the cows and smuggling them to his house, It goes south quickly when they break out of his yard and start drinking from Kahn's pool (Kahn was already suspicious of [and infuriated at] what Hank was doing). So Kahn ends up calling the police. Hank quickly gets in touch with Appleseed to come get the cows and run, which he does. Some time later, the Hills are back to regular Mega Lo Food, although their garden is coming along, it'll be some time before they can have fresh organic vegetables, but they have no idea how they'll raise meat. One day, the mail is dropped off, and among the mail is a letter from Appleseed. Hank opens the letter, and sees Appleseed standing next to a new calf with writing on it that says, "I named him Hank!" and Hank smiles, going, "He looks delicious"

@@HanakoFairhall Thanks for the summary. I forgot how it ended, but years after this episode, I didn't realize how the concept of "co-op" have changed so much. At least in my area, you go to the "co-op" to get vegan and other ingredients for alternative diets. "Farm markets" are usually where you can get meat items and are not swarming with blue-haired millenials.

Early Simpsons was amazing the writers they have now are incredibly, incredibly bad. Bob's Burgers is just about the only animated show on Fox worth watching.

This is better than the simpsons which is better than family guy which created such a low bar for tv that south park and rick & morty became possible to air.

The other big thing Flavor wise is that a lot of produce is picked early and left to ripen on the truck rather than on the plant. It reduces spoilage, but it kills the taste.

@@JLT0087 I found that out recently too, tomatoes bought in super markets don't ripen on the vine so they have no taste. Talking about this is a bit of a synchronicity as I harvested my first garden grown tomato today. Another benefit of fruits being consumed fresh off the vine is that is when it has the most electrons and will increase your bodies voltage or PH (ph is measured in millivolts.) All disease is created either by a lack of voltage or nutrients, health is voltage. The voltage in fruits is even observable with special photographic cameras.

@@jeremygeller9145 Steak is good in all its iterations. Rare, medium rare, and yes, a good well done steak is a nice experience from time to time. People have the conception that they are tough and rubbery, but a good well done steak is actually still soft inside with plenty of juice, but it also has a char on the outside that tastes good and is also a pleasing texture. Now don't get me wrong, it's not something I'd want to eat all the time. But a true appreciator of beef shouldn't mind mixing it up sometimes!

I'll say to the Belgians the same thing I'd say to the Italians who claim they have better pizza. Your main ingredients come from the Americas. Cacao and tomatoes are from the New World. Should USA claim that Turkey grows crummy tulips or the Dutch don't know how to salt a herring? Central America invented chocolate, not Belgium. You have the waffles and steamed mussels.

The USA makes some incredibly good chocolate, but the candy chocolate bar stuff like Hershey's is mediocre at best. It's really just for kids, but too many adults buy it because it's cheap instead of spending a few more bucks for a quality bar. Mexico is the same way. The stuff kids eat there is awful, but you'd be remised if you judged the home country of chocolate just off of that.

To be fair, most Europeans I've talked to love to hate on American chocolate. So I can see why your hosts might be afraid of serving you that, especially after eating some really good stuff from your country.

It's kind of crazy that people think it's normal to eat the same vegetables and fruit all year round. In western Europe there is a huge variety of seasonal produce, yet people want to eat bell peppers every single day.

I hear you there, although I'm originally from an agricultural farm town, I've been around lots of livestock farms and I agree, it's just the right kind of stinky!

As someone who lives in the middle of fucking nowhere, it's true. When I get blasted with poo smell by the morning breeze in the springtime, I feel happy since I know the local farms are doing well and properly fertilizing everything.
