The 2019 FIDE World Cup is taking place in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia from 10 September to 4 October. The 128-player knockout tournament features most of the world's best players. The total prize fund is $1.6 million, with $110,000 for the winner and $6,000 for first round losers. The finalists will qualify for the 2020 Candidates Tournament that determines Magnus Carlsen's next World Championship challenger.
The format is six knockout rounds of 2-game classical matches before a 4-game final. The time control is 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. If the score is tied the players then play two 25-minute + 10-second increment rapid games, then two 10+10 games, then two 5+3 and, finally, Armageddon, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw qualifies Black for the next round. Some info from watching the match and the commentary by Jan (very sad Magnus left just before this match, it would be great to see his reactions): - the two pawns down really were a blunder, based on real time reaction of Yu and his time (he spent almost a minute to refocus on the next few moves) - black had a huge advantage that he didn't use, probably the biggest blunder of Vityugov was after 17. Qh5 (which is another bad move by Yu) he can play Qc5 and white is lost - either Yu loses the knight on d4 or he defends it with Ke3, but that allows Nc4 with check, losing the queen on h5. Vityugov was two pawns up with white king wide open, protecting the material instead of attacking just made his position overly passive.

excellent comment and this insight was missing in the video. By not playing Qc5 he did not win. By playing Qe7 instead of Qf8 to trade the queens he lost it and simply invited Yu to get his rooks on the 7th line which is deadly in such endings

Hello Agadmator. Long-time viewer, excellent video as always. I was wondering if you have any Rashid Nezhmetdinov you've been keeping in your back pocket for some time, as I thoroughly enjoy every dissection you have done on his games but it has been a long time since I have had such a game to brighten my day. You break out a tal game at your benchmark subscriber counts, which I thoroughly enjoy, but I've missed no reverse gear Nez. Regardless please continue making excellent content, forever grateful to you. Cheers from California

I just finished a ranked game in lichess, and the analysis of the game said I made no mistakes. I had an average centipawn loss of 26. I’m not at all trying to say I’m any good. I just wanted to say it was because of your videos. I still make many blunders, but every now and then, when I take my time, I pull out a pretty good game. Thanks again.

Not looking at your opponent before and during a match is not anything to do with psyching out your opponent -- you will note that they aren't looking at quite a lot of things, but instead both already focusing all attention on the chessboard. This is important in fast games, especially blitz. You can't afford to be wasting seconds taking your eye off of the board; time to study the position is too scarce for such a bad habit of looking away. You don't want distracted by anything. Humans are naturally drawn to look at one another's face, so it's especially important NOT to make eye contact before the game or you might find your attention going back to the opponent's face again during the game. It's the most compelling distraction near you as you play. In classical format where you have all sorts of time, you'll note that players much more often make eye contact before or during a game. They look around the room, even getting up sometimes to move about. But some players do make a habit even there of no eye contact as they sit down, to maintain that good habit in faster time formats. Everything is habit. Even winning.

Not looking at each other when shaking hands is most often the simplest explanation. They are not giving their opponent an opportunity to intimidate or distract them. They are probably holding a million permutations in their head, as well as possible preparation, and any distraction would be not welcomed. I am surprised that there aren't a few more jokers in the field who purposefully break the tradition and try to mess with the other person, but since no one looks it would be wasted energy. They still do shake of course out of tradition and ethics that chess was founded upon.
