If they didn’t have it set up that whoever takes the iron throne also takes the Targaryen name than the entire Targaryen dynasty would be over just like that. Names have a lot of power in royal families so it’s incredibly important that both names be honored and live on through this generation.

There were individual queens in European history, it's not unheard of. And even if it were: who cares? So many blame Viserys for Dance of the Dragons. But it was really Jaehaerys the "wise" who created a precedent of letting Lords to reject a female ruler for her sex: If he hadn't fucked around but held tight to the Targeryan way of elder inheriting regardless of sex, then this wouldn't have happened. He could've even pointed that Dorne have the same heritance system, and were so strong they were last to "fall" under the Targeryan rule. But he only got the moniker "wise" from people of the Faith, who he let run all over him, after making sure incest in his line was still allowed. "Wise" fucked over his descendants with problems he could've nipped from the bud.

​@@Sienisota I don't understand the logic behind it. When Rheanys was born, her grandmother proclaimed her the future queen. So no one had a problem with the daughter of the next king ruling one day. Then her father dies and suddenly she can no longer inherit and women are suddenly placed at the end of the line of succession. Then Jaehaerys really screwed up. Was it first that women could inherit when they had no elder brothers, and then suddenly when they were the direct heir and finally when there was no one else left? In A Song of Ice and Fire we learn that it is quite normal for a lord's daughters to inherit before his brother. Then why was it even considered to pull Daemon before Rheanyra. And then Rheanyra was heiress and got a brother. And everyone was suddenly Jaehaerys preferred men. Rhaenyra was more Targaryen by lineage than her brothers.

Not necessarily true, Daeron the Good was a great king to give an example. Even Aegon III's reign, while showing the waning of Targaryen power due to the death of the dragons, still was a peaceful time to follow a disastrous civil war. Viserys II was Hand for over a decade and king for one, and in all that time held the kingdom together despite his nephews' eccentricities and in the end left a stable society. Even Maekar The Anvil had a decent enough reign on his mark, controversies about how he ended on the Throne aside

Because Otto is just as much an usurper as the grandson he wants to put on the throne. While corlys's wife should have been the queen by right. Despite that corlys didn't try to usurp the crown and served it instead. Otto is a weak man, a good skeemer given power by others, unlike corlys who's power was gained by his own streght. The velaryons are the second moust powerfull house in the seven kingdoms because of what hi did for it, he is not powerfull because his house was already the moust powerfull when he became it's lord.

Because Otto is conniving about it. He also stomped on other people's opportunities to get power while pretending he was on their side. Corlys, most of the time, proved how brilliant of an asset he is. And he doesn't do all that unnecessary shit to get closer to power.

Viserys is the only one to blame for the Dance of the Dragons.

It is wrong because changing succession laws equals opening the door to civil war. In a medieval hereditary royalty, the late king's eldest son was the INDISPUTABLE successor. Rhaenyra could not have reigned without killing her half-brothers. Otherwise, there would still have been the thread that one of them may rightfully claim the throne. Even if they submitted to her, they could still change their mind, especially if she took some decisions they disagreed with (something that would have necessarily occured sooner or later). The fear that Rhaenyra may kill them is actually the reason why Aegon took the throne and he was 100% right. At least, Viserys could have done like his grandfather and make a council. But no. He just pushed his whim. While there was not even any succession issue : Viserys could very well keep Daemon as a potential heir until Aegon's birth. Instead of that, he decided to make Rhaenyra his heiress, just because he wanted that and without taking into account the inevitable consequences. This is the worst thing a king can do.

Doing so causes a war and thousands die in westeros because of Viserys.

It's funny because in the books it was actually between Laenor and Viserys and not Rhaenys
