Originally this song was made to show love to New York. It was not a Diss. But while they were in New York filming this video Biggie went on the radio and encouraged people to go to deal with them. So the Dogg Pound and Snoop got shoot at. Their trailers got shoot up. So that's when they added the buildings getting smashed

Also, Kurupt is from Philly but came up out west. He is a perfect blend of that traditional east coast complex lyricism set to a west coast vibe. Truly special, significant, and underappreciated talent.

This song was intended as a dedication to New York and Tha Dogg Pound wanted some NY legends like Nas etc. to be in the video. While they were filming in NY Tha Dogg Pound were shot at by some New Yorkers who thought they were disrespecting them and the city. The parts where they're kicking down the buildings were shot afterwards in response / reaction to these shootings.

This joint was made in 1994 - 1995. The Dogg Pound was about to make a vid in NYC when they got shot at in a drive by shooting and all three members decided to put a subliminal song on NYC for how they treated them when they first arrived to NY.

Kurupt was a West Coast MC. But he was from Philly orginally so he def was influenced by the East Coast lyricists like Rakim. This song samples Grandmaster Flash's New York New York. Beat was originally for BIggie St. Ides commercial (by the way, you should review some of those). As someone said below, this was initially a tribute, but the video turned into a diss after Dogg Pound's trailor was shot up. That's why you see buildings getting knocked over and stuff.

The beat was taken from a commercial that Biggie did earlier. They jacked the beat to smash on N.Y because N.Yers were conceited with music , thinking it belonged to them only

Now you have to listen to L.A. L.A. by Capone N Noreaga, Mobb Deep, & Tragedy Khadafi. It was the response to this track and is credited as helping spark the East Coast West Coast Beef. This song came out in 1995 LA LA was like 1996/87.
