About the music:
This musical piece serves the comedy-ballet, a work mixing
theatre, music and dance, for the entertainment of the king and the court. It's here
between the collaboration of Molière and Lully which creates this new genre where the music is
integrated into the theatrical plot: Le Bourgeois gentilhomme (The Bourgeois Gentleman) is a perfect example. Created at the request of Louis XIV "The Sun King" (1638-1715) to ridicule the turkish emissary who
made a very bad impression when he was received as a monarch.
About the composer:
Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687), born Giovanni Battista Lulli, was an Italian-born French composer, instrumentalist, and dancer who is considered a master of the French Baroque music style. Best known for his operas, he spent most of his life working in the court of Louis XIV of France and became a French subject in 1661.
Personal notes:
Yes, it seems that this piece of music was made as a "parody" of grandiloquent melodies for ceremonies, but although it was considered that way during its creation, I personally think that this music has the essence of France during the 17th century, especially the court of Louis XIV.
No offense to the late king, but aside from a few laughs at the context of this melody (The Bourgeois Gentleman), he must have admitted at some point how epic and majestic this music is.
