You want to see "Saving Christmas" done correctly? Look no further than "A Charlie Brown Christmas". Think about it: Sad-sack protagonist depressed over the hollow commercialism of Christmas, his friend reminds him that Christmas is meant to commemorate the birth of an extraordinary person who was destined to die for man's sins, protagonist is filled with inner peace at this revelation, his friends are inspired to create beauty through kindness and teamwork. All this from a barely 30 minute cartoon from the mid-1960s. Look upon it, Kirk Cameron, and realize how mediocre you really are.

Fun fact: Charles Schultz studied theology and included frequent, non-hateful Biblical references in the original "Peanuts" strip. I'm neither Christian nor a fan of most religious media, but the way he did it is actually kind of educational and charming (probably because it wasn't the focus - just another interest of his/way he saw the world).

I almost wonder if this movie was Kirk Cameron's way of reconciling his religion with his wealth and privilege, but not in a way that meant giving either one up. His conscience was probably eating at him, but rather than do what Jesus would *actually* want him to do during the holidays, like give to the needy and think of others, he thought, "Nope, I like expensive gifts and gorging on party food too much. I'll just make up a bunch of bullsh*t to post hoc justify my greed and assuage my guilt *that* way. Brilliant!"

I have a theory that in this movie's universe, Kirk Cameron might actually be Satan in human form. Throughout the movie, he tells Christian White to basically endorse terrible things such as being greedy (telling him that he is wrong for worrying about the less fortunate and that extreme materialism is good), violence (Santa beating a "heretic" to an inch of his life being "cool") and lies. You can even argue that he is playing with Christian's weak mind to get him to embrace the madness (whenever he makes a point, he stares at Christian until the latter responds in approval as if he is looking forward to Christian's acceptance). He also acts smug, never seeming to be daunted by any problems as if he was overly confident. You can even interpret his winking at the end indicating that he is the Devil in disguise (and is happy that he succeeded in playing into a man's mind to have him endorse selfishness). So yeah, Kirk Cameron in this movie might actually be the Devil. That or he is just a selfish moron. Still, it is fun to come up with crazy theories.

I think a good example of someone who could impart the message of Jesus without bible thumping is one of the most sincerely and deeply religious men of the past few decades here in the states, Mr. Rogers. Initially training and planning to become a minister, he decided that kids needed a reaffirming, loving voice on television and went on to create his famous show... Despite clearly being both understanding of his faith and devout in a way I doubt Kirk Cameron can even approach, he never once quoted directly from scripture or focused his episodes on God. Instead, he lived out the message he felt Jesus was trying to convey by teaching children how to be nice to one another, or bringing on physically and mentally challenged children and treating them with the sincere respect they deserved (and even keeping in touch when them throughout their lives thereafter) as opposed to the showpieces they often wind up being on more half-assed shows and films who wish to feign respect for fellow man. He also overcome racial hostilities and tension not via language that would go over a child's head but through simple and symbolic action, such as by inviting the black mailman to put his feet in the same pool as him, a technique clearly inspired by those used by Jesus and others in the bible which is full of foot washing symbolism, though again he DEMONSTRATED instead of LECTURED. Finally, rather than trying to force you into his idea of the perfect child or calling the behavior of others sinful, he'd often close with what I believe is just about the most beautiful line ever spoken on television: "There's no person in the whole world like you; and I like you just the way you are." There were no prerequisites or conditions attached, he simply loved you as a fellow human being just as Jesus, a man who would sit and dine with the sick, sinners, prostitutes, tax collectors, and anyone who would have him, said we ought to. He meant a lot to me, and I feel I learned more of the message that Jesus attempted to impart on the world from him despite never mentioning him or the bible than I have from the combined efforts of every hostile bible thumping evangelist I've since come across. Mr Rogers lived and breathed the best aspects of Christmas every day of his life, and it saddens me that the Mr Rogers of the world have given way to the Kirk Camerons and Pat Robertsons.

Agreed. I think that Fred Rogers was probably one of the purest and most sincere men to ever grace this earth with his presence. Yes, he came off as dorky or uncool to some of us 80s kids, but I remember watching a few of his shows after I had matured, and became an adult, and thought to myself, that this man really gets it, and is a near perfect example of what Christianity should be, and how it should be presented. I still remember a show of his, where he was talking about when tragedies happen, to not focus so much on the negative, but look for the helpers.

I described this movie to my catholic mom, and it went something like this: "Do you know who Kirk Cameron is?" "Yes." "Well, he made a movie where he's at a Christmas party and finds that someone is having a bad time. After asking what's wrong, the guy says that he doesn't see how anyone there is truly celebrating Jesus. The rest of the movie is them sitting in a car while Kirk explains why all the festivities do tie into Christ's birth." My mom said: "That sounds awful."

It is amazing how "Christians" get so obsessed with violence. Take a look at Gibson's "Passion of the Christ", could have been a good movie - but just so stuffed with violence. Yes, Jesus suffered - but don't let that be the point. Heck, anyone who was crucified suffered - it was torture after all. The point was Jesus life/teachings, his sacrifice - but Gibson used it as an excuse to make a bloody violent/torture porn movie. It just astounds how people manage to pervert the word of God....beyond all recognition.

Geez, next Kirk Cameron is going to explain how Santa bringing Frosty the Snowman back to life after he melted is like when Jesus rose from the dead. "So the next time you watch Frosty the Snowman, look at the greenhouse Frosty melted in as the empty tomb. Much like how Frosty is no longer a puddle of water in the greenhouse, Jesus is no longer dead and buried in the tomb. He's alive." If it turns out that that was a deleted scene, I wouldn't be surprised.

"but when those same kind of early church fathers appropriated Pagan beliefs" Care to name them, or are you just making generalized, sweeping statements without any actual proof? "even their holiday" That's wrong actually. There is no other Holiday within the European pagan belief system that puts significance on the day December 25th, people merely use the celebrations during the entire season of Winter as an excuse (and wrongly) for Christmas "appropriating" paganism. As for the whole "Christmas tree" debacle, it has no actual significance to the Christian doctrine, and serves merely as a cultural celebratory ritual re-purposed from earlier beliefs. "But thats most likely because they're using their faith to push an political agenda like most republicans do. after all super religious people tend to be very Naive and gullible. Look at the 2016 election!" Oh, let me guess, you're one of those "I'M WITH HER!" suckers, right? Kirk's comments on materialism seems to prove that he's a big fan of "prosperity gospel" which is one of the worst perversions of Christianity. The short version of "prosperity gospel" is that God wants rich people to be rich. That your wealth proves that you are chosen by God because you are a better human being than not-rich people. Which is kind of the EXACT OPPOSITE of what Jesus said when he threw all the money changers out of the temple.

Most modern day "Christians" ignore most of the biblical no nos. They like to ignore the commandments and scriptures that are inconvenient and don't fit their lifestyle, so they just re write the bible to fit. The vanity, greed, sloth, drunkeness and lust, seems to be what most of the Xtians struggle with or just ignore completely. They just re wrote the bible to say that Jesus and God were also drunken, vain, shallow and greedy assholes.

I'm a Christian, and this review did not offend me at all. In fact, it was pretty funny! This movie is awful anyway, and most of the "facts" are bizarre. I celebrate Christmas, but I know that Jesus (Yeshua) was not really born on Dec. 25th. We don't know exactly when he was born, but probably sometime in the spring. Also, like 90% of all Christmas decorations are pagan-inspired. Trying to justify this whole thing in a movie is actually pretty scary. Christian White's character at the beginning was right! Why are we spending so much money on decorations when we could feed another family?? Oh, and I believe that Herod did massacre the children, but Brad is right, that it isn't in other historical texts that we've found yet (at least, I haven't heard of it). That doesn't mean it didn't happen. The only real reference we have of Socrates' teachings is from the writings of Plato, but that doesn't mean Socrates didn't exist. Anyway, lighten up, everyone! It's just a movie, and it's just a review. And a funny one at that.

How did the pitch meeting for this movie go? “I’m gonna sit in a car and talk about Christmas BS!!”

It really baffles me just how deluded and arrogant Cameron and his ilk are. That's what bugs me even more than their bigoted views, they are just so _stuck up_ about their hatred towards others!

Why do I envision this movie getting viewed in a similar light to "Reefer Madness" about 20 years from now?

when Brad said " light the crosses on fire" I nearly spit out my drink because I pictured Kirk doing that in his neighbors yards smiling like he did something good but everyone else is just horrified lol

Christian White reminds of Walter White when he was hiding in that cabin. It adds a whole other layer to this movie if you imagine this is Heisenberg's personal Hell.

I just like thinking Kirk Cameron has his Christmas decorations up all year and only eats holiday cookies and hot chocolate, and is one Christmas light burning out away from killing his family
