Funny story: the main reason they released this song was because when they started, they were the very first act signed to a new label called Casablanca. Cut to about 5 years later, and not only is KISS one of the hottest acts in the rock world with a bunch of platinum albums, but Casablanca Records is also now the absolute Mecca for disco music in the US. Donna Summer, Cher, Village People, Lipps Inc, even legit funk acts like Parliament, they all signed to Casablanca. They used their huge disco cache to convince KISS (a pure arena rock act) to put a disco track on their next album, and it became one of their biggest-charting songs.

The way paul described it was he was fascinated by how popular disco songs were getting, even though most weren't that good. "I could write one of these in an hour". If I'm not mistaken, he said he wrote this the next day

From wikipedia: ""I Was Made for Lovin' You" draws heavily from the disco style that was popular in late-1970s United States. According to legend, the members of the band were in conflict with their producers, who wanted the band to shift to a more commercial sound. In response, the band argued that lucrative disco songs could be written by anyone in a short time frame. The story goes that the song's demo was completed in mere hours after the bet."

Yes! My 2nd all-time fave rock band! Many purists diss them for doing a disco-flavored song; however, lead singer Paul Stanley was challenged that he couldn't write disco music. He wrote this song in less than an hour. Drummer Peter Criss is recognized as one of the great drummers in rock, so learning from him is a good idea. Thanks for your reaction.

One more good reaction. If you want any suggestions of their songs to react to, here they are: "Lick it up" (Kiss without masks for the 1st time); "All Hell's breakin' loose"; "Heaven's on fire"; "I love it loud"; "Rock and Roll All Nite"; and the beautiful ballad "Forever".

The story I've heard about making this song was that Paul Stanley (who sings this one) wrote it because he was told by someone from the record label Kiss was signed with that nobody wanted to hear Kiss do a disco tune; that said, I also heard a version where Paul made the comment that disco was so simple that anybody could whip up a tune in no time flat - so he then had to back up his claim. Either way, it's a massive departure from the driving rock which the band is best noted for.

I've heard Paul say the latter. Disco is mindless dance beat music... Kiss isn't exactly the greatest at musical excellence (though they were gods on stage) so Disco should have been and was a slam dunk. I fear the hangover from it caused Unmasked and The Elder to be as awful as they were though. Hopefully Millie does more 70's Kiss, but also they were a lot of fun in the 80's and early 90's.

When KISS did this song they were trying to impress the peers and the critics, and actually they weren't really a band at that point, they were just four guys running a muck. It was one member thinking he knew what was best for the band. It wasn't to long afterwards that the original band seen in this video started to break up and wouldn't reunite until 1995 on MTV Unplugged.

Yes, usually Kiss is about hard rock - not all that brutal though, like many think who only know them from their makeup 🙂 But it's always very catchy, and easy to appreciate. Their 70s makeup era is a hard rock mixture of rock'n'roll, glam and pop. Between 1983-96, they performed without makeup and became more of a hair metal band. Didn't matter much, still brilliant. Through all eras, the leaders and mainstays of the band has been Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. Paul is the "Starchild", with the unbelievable soulful vocals and who also plays rhythm guitar. (Check out the songs from the 1987 "Crazy nights" album to find out where he peaked as a singer. The notes he hit are absolutely unbelievable.) Gene is the "demon" on bass and lead vocals on certain songs - mainly the ones he himself has written. The other two you see here are lead guitarist Ace Frehley, who was and is very popular with the fans but his time(s) in the band have been very problematic, mainly due to his alcoholism. He originally left in 1982. Drummer Peter Criss is actually not the one you hear playing drums on this song. His playing had at this poiint deteriorated horribly, due to cocaine abuse among other things, and the band secretly let Ace's friend Anton Fig play drums on all but one song in total on their two 1979-1980 albums. In 1980, Criss left more or less willingly. Both he and Ace have returned later so the band could make nostalgia money, but at this point it's very unlikely that any of them will ever play with Kiss again. Even if Kiss do not split up after their next tour, as they have announced that they will. "I was made for loving you" exists mainly because Paul Stanley loved disco dancing in the late 70s. Gene on the other hand is a purist rocker and doesn't like the song, even though it's his basslline that mainly drives it. Gene does not refuse to play it. however - he's way to smart to not play a song that he knows is popular with the fans, and this is arguably their biggest hits ever. Even if - or maybe that's just the reason - it is also hated by other fans, who like Gene are rock purists.

For a Soft KISS Ballad, Peter Criss (the Cat) co-wrote and sang "Beth". It's still performed onstage today by whomever the Band's current drummer is. WORTH a listen. When Kiss was signed to Casablanca Records in 1974, their label head Neil Bogart used to make bubblegum pop records on his previous label... Besides Kiss, he signed mostly funk and disco artists like Parliament Funkadelic and Donna Summer... but Kiss was his first band to break big commercially in 1975. As disco music took off in 1976/ '77... Casablanca Records became the premiere disco label and sold millions of records by the late 70's. By 1978, Kiss was going through a bit of crisis as drugs and egos were clashing between the 4 members... A Kiss movie was rather poorly received and Ace Frehley (lead guitar) and Peter Criss (drums) wanted to leave Kiss... A compromise was reached - all 4 members would record solo albums under complete creative control, and they would each be released w/ the Kiss logo... The records sold well - over half million each, but Neil Bogart pressed 1 million copies of each record to distributors... So, out of 4 million pressed, nearly 2 miillion records were returned unsold... It was a huge financial setback. In the meantime, Paul Stanley was partying in Studio 54 enjoying the disco scene... Gene Simmons was trying to get his own record label going, and dating Cher in his personal life... Ace and Peter were drowning in alcohol and addictions by that point. Finally, the 4 members decided to work on a new Kiss album in 1979... Ace Frehley demanded more songs on the record, and Peter Criss demanded that his solo album producer Vini Poncia do the album. They felt like disco was commercially huge, so that was the road to take... Ace did not like that direction and did a rocking cover of the Rolling Stones' "2000 Man"... as well as 2 of his songs. Kiss rehearsed the album 'Dynasty', but when Peter Criss came in the studio to do the drums, he couldn't play proficiently... the producer sent Criss home and had session drummer Anton Fig play on the record (Criss played on his 1 song - "Dirty livin' ") even if Peter Criss was on the cover and in music videos... Apparently, Criss played so badly on tour in '79 that he was excluded from the next Kiss disco album 'Unmasked' in 1980 (Anton Fig played all the drums on that record). Eric Carr (drums) did the 1980 tour... When Kiss went on tour in 1979, they discovered that they had become family entertainment... Kiss was now dressed in capes and colorful sequins and had alienated their hardcore rock fans. As a result, their shows were no longer selling out in the US even though Kiss were huge overseas.

This song is an outlier from the typical KISS songs. (Apparently they did more disco songs, but I haven't heard them yet). There were many fans who hated the song and others who loved it. I had no issues w/ it. It's a good song. Love it. Anyway, check out some classic KISS rock songs and their ballads too (I love those. Start w/ Beth). Ace Frehley was known for his unique guitars that lit up and had pyrotechnics (fire, smoke, etc.) going on while playing.

Crazy thing about the Disco beat is that it is a real endurance test for drummers. There's not a lot of difficulty in the technicality involved, but it really presses the drummer to play consistently and to keep their volume in line and to essentially be a dancing BackBeat machine. It's not something that is as easy as it sounds because most rumors will have a tendency to drift B in their beat back and forth and so I do think of disco as an good test of a drummers sense of timing and it can shape their discipline when it comes to playing in a very reliable manner. It is a different kind of precision as opposed to stay the brilliant Neil Peart who was able to play like three different people at the same time and still keep his Vibe and his sense of order.

This was meant as a joke. Paul Stanley wanted to prove how easy it is to write a disco song, so this song is an outlier for Kiss. This is one of the largest catalogs in music, so..... From seventies glam rock to eighties melodic 'hair' metal, with different guitarist and drummer, to the hybrid of the nineties and two thousands. The five no make up albums from eighty-three to ninety, plus the last make up album just before it are by far the best written, played, and produced albums.

This comment has nothing to do witk kiss. Based on your liking for Floyd's Great Gig in the Sky, I suggest that you react to Eivør's "Trodlabundin" - the version performed halfway up the side of a Norwegian fjord - and/or Falling Free - the live version from Torshavn. She's from the Faroe Isles and has a voice like nothing I've heard for years (if ever). The two songs are quite different but equally captivating/mesmerising.

Yes this is disco, because as i remember the story goes someone told Paul that making a disco hit was hard. so they did this song to show it wasn't that hard. THe band is rock n roll though. this is a one off.

Milli! I Love You!! This is a great song in its own right, but... , not representative of KISS. It was a one-off venture into Disco. To get a better feel for KISS and what they're all about, I would try **DETROIT ROCK CITY (Live)** Cheers!
