Unless the island is not anchored, we have seen some multi-family buildings putting wide furniture feet on them to avoid this requirement…

then you’ll have no outlets on the island 🤨

Great information. One question. I'm putting a 36-inch gas cooktop in my island. Does the cooktop count towards the square-feet requirement for GFCI outlets?
@PPG1967
@PPG1967 Жыл бұрын
If the cooktop is not making the island larger, then no
@PPG1967
@PPG1967 Жыл бұрын
If the cooktop is there or not, the actual size of the island is what counts...unless the cooktop is creating a larger island.

Does a duplex receptacle count as one or two? This requirement is insane. Most islands will not even have enough operable face to locate 3 different receptacle locations. Considering one side will be all doors and windows, other sides may have long overhangs (greater than 6")

A duplex receptacle outlet counts as one outlet. A quad counts as one outlet.

When they do that “waterfall” look with the stone, is it a requirement to have a receptacle on the end pieces that create the waterfall look?

Is your question referring to anything in this video??

@@PPG1967 - well, that island has the waterfall sides, where the stone countertop is put on the sides. Normally the receptacles would be installed into those ends, to better meet the six foot cord length rules. But it’s not as easy to install receptacles onto those stone surfaces in comparison to wood products normally used for cabinets.

I'm learning from you today. This is the first time hearing about waterfall sides. So, yeah I don't think it's a good idea to install outlets on the side of the granite.
@stevebabiak6997

@@PPG1967 - we all learn things from each other, that’s a hood thing. Now, where are those receptacles going to actually be located on such a large island with those waterfall sides? And will that installation meet code? That’s the basic question.
@PPG1967
@PPG1967 Жыл бұрын
(1) on each side of the sink located in the wood cabinetry, and one probably on the other side of the island. However all additional outlets are at the discretion of the builder or owner.

Lol - the island isn’t that big when you think about it. One outlet would be enough, two is more than enough and 3 is overkill. This is why they (NEC) doesn’t ask me. Also, it’s technically a receptacle and 6 plug holes that will need to be cleaned around, will get in the way and tick off my wife - 😂😂😂.
