I planted, carefully about 18 fresh acorns, and zero sprouted. The squirrels planted about 100 and these sprouted. Now I let the squirrels do it and lift the baby trees up when needed. ; )

My son has a 2 acre field on which he now wishes to grow trees. In 2021, I started planting a variety of trees but will plant mostly Oaks. In my garden, I have a glorious Oak tree that I believe is around 110 years old. My calculation of its age is derived from the circumference of the bough, 1 metre from the ground (275 centimetres) divided by 2.5. Last autumn (2022) I picked 18 acorns just as they were about to drop and planted them in pots of damp compost, leaving them in my cool garage for the winter. I took them outside at the very beginning of March 2023 and now, nearly 3 months later, have 16 Oak saplings doing really well. 2 of them have sprouted double boughs - which I will leave to see how they develop, in comparison to the single boughs. I will give them 2 or 3 years in pots and transfer them to my son's field and build guards around them all, to try and protect them from pesky vermin, rabbits and sheep. I am totally absorbed by this project and one day (long after I have shuffled off this mortal coil!) my few years of planting and developing these wonderful trees will be a magnificent site to behold - I hope. I believe acorns from the White Oaks family begin growing the year they hit the ground. Acorns from the Red Oak family need stratification and do need an over wintering in cold storage either artificial in refrigeration or naturally thru an outside winter period. The Reds will then sprout and begin to grow the following spring after dropping.

Thank you for sharing your skills on growing oak seeds. Your method is the best one I found to work great ! I tried with wet paper towels , ziplock bags and so on. Congratulations, your method is # 1 as far as I’m concern. I hope this helps out other gardeners who are just starting out or even professionals. So Cool! I have a 150 year old oak tree in my garden and it’s massive! Has a hole in the middle that you can climb up and has very thick trunks and I love it!

That last way of growing oak trees is definitely the easiest and fastest way! I do enjoy watching plants grow though. Ive found about 60 or so white oak acorns the last couple weeks and I have about 20 in small pots already.

Great video. A couple of years ago I collected quite a lot of acorns from highlands of Scotland and planted them out in pots, the next spring. Most of them sprouted and were doing well. Unfortunately the local grey squirrels dug most of them up and ate them, even though they had germinated. The few remaining ones seemed to die from a infestation of inch worms. But i will try again next year.

I put mine in the refrigerator over the winter and have just pulled them out for the spring, I'm putting them in a cup of water in a very warm place to germinate them. I will post throughout the year and let you know how it went.

Very interesting! Thank you. How deep would you estimate the tap root of that 4 yr. one? How well do they do transplanted? Would a younger or older do better? It would seem the older has more risk of root damage but Idk anything about it.

Ok. I live in nc. My southern live oak is dropping acorn now. So i need to put in a damp cloth and put in the fridge? I heard if they float discard. Should i dry them out a little first?

I love collecting and planting acorns - i do this every autumn. The best way to do it is to put them underground in october and they will grow next spring. I was putting them in pots 2/3 years ago - now its waste of time - its better to put them outside and get them used to cold and sun etc. They belong outside. The only problem with that is birds digging them out when they look for food.

I am curious how the three seeds did that you put in water only. Did they develop bigger roots? Did they sprout a stem & leaves?

i see people talking about "carefully planted the acorns" and germinated before blabla... Easiest way... mark my words! in Autumn go outside with your kids pick up all the acorns and chestnuts you think you need. Make fun stuff out of it kids love it... The rest you didnt use throw it in a bucket with dirt, next spring? Chestnut and Oak seedlings.

I just soaked my acorn seeds that sank with hydrogen peroxide to kill any fungus that may had lingered and somehow all the seeds cracked and sprouted with in a day or two after throwing them in a ziplock bag and let them sit for a few days and I didn't expect them to sprout after one day. the ones that didn't sprout sprouted at day 2.

I'm thinking about buying some particular white oak seeds to plant but I'm undecided which ones to get. I've read a lot about them and am worried about germination. I'll only be getting either 68 smaller or 35 larger acorns (same price per ounce), and they're expensive. They've been in storage maybe 5 months, which being recalcitrant seeds means they don't have a long storage life and have to maintain their moisture...and I've read that parasitic insects greatly lower germination rates. Then I read that the larger acorns-without their caps are the best to use because they'll produce better seedlings. I've grown a lot of different trees from seed and I have to agree that the bigger the seed, the better chance something has to survive. Right now I'm growing Deodara Cedar..which I'm really impressed with. So yeah, I'm wondering if you've noticed the bigger acorns doing better than the smaller ones. I've never grown oaks but I've transplanted them and I know they're very resilient trees, I'm just trying to get the most viable ones I can. By the way, if you've ever grown Elderberry, please tell me your secret. Haha, that's the one tree I just cannot grow for some reason.

2 questions: After transplanting my oak tree outside last April after planting it in October 2021, keeping it inside all of last winter, my oak tree lost its main stem in September and all that was left of it was a 1 inch tall stub. It grew 2 branches to the side, but as of November 9, 2022, my oak tree still isn’t changing color and it didn’t grow back the main stem. Will my oak tree grow back its main stem next summer? When will my oak tree change color?

I stored a bunch of burr oak seeds in a plastic bag and went to look in on them and I noticed over the winter atleast 10 already got sprouted roots, 1st question should I remove the outside shell it doesn't seem to be stopping them, and 2 what kind of soil do you recommend to start a few in pots

I paid my son 2 pound to collect me a bag full last week ..out of maybe 80 half already got there root radicle on the strecth lol ...I'm gonna get them all around 2 years old ..so there about 2/3 feet tall and then my oak tree buissness is open 😂👊💪

I am in Canada, and the squirrels get the acorns within two days after they hit the ground. So no sprouted acorns with them.

Squirrels they do one damn fine job. Squirrels,not hard to look up, just look up, they have branch offices everywhere.

Wanting acorns for squirrels, I have over 100 that are turning into trees. I did as some have said,watered, planted some, refrigerator, and indoor planted. It'll take years to grow acorns won't it?

What if you don't have the yard?? We have a huge white oak that drops tons of acorns on our deck and I'd like to sprout those and grow a few more. Help!!

White oaks don't need germination. Other oaks do, especially if your winter is not very cold like in California for example.

But squirrels are going to get many of these. I guess there are so many that they can't take them all. 😃
