Your speakers will fit under the cheek pad cover in the Arai. You will have plenty of room for your speakers in there. You can also route the wires in between the neck roll and shell so that they are not exposed on the bottom of the helmet. ECE test helmets in one of five known impact points. Unlike ECE, Snell uses a random impact test, double vs. single impact, and a penetration test (You can make a helmet much lighter if you do not expect much out of it). In Europe the Arai is ECE rated while still maintaining its ability to pass Snell. ECE is a lowest common denominator standard that allows all European helmet mfg. to sell with in the European Union. The British lost their BSI and the Germans lost their TUV standards when the EU was created. Snell is a non-profit organization that has been researching a developing standards to improve helmets for over 50 years. Arai has been hand making helmets in Japan for 70 years and they have 50 years of race experience to back up their technological achievements. Klim subs out their helmet manufacturing to a Chinese helmet company.

I really love that you conclude on going with what fits better because I think way too many people overlook such an important part of buying a helmet. People don't realize how many different head shapes there. While working at a dealership, I used to find that people would be in a helmet too large for their heads because it was more comfortable, but their measurements and head shapes proved otherwise. Fitment is key. Great comparison video!

Nice review. I went back and forth with these two helmets and ended up with my second XD4. Actually bought the Klim and wanted to love it but it just didn't fit me. My face shield didn't close on one side all the way and the comfort liner attachment tabs broke. Luckily Klim had a 30 day test ride promo going on so I was able t return it. Arai quality is way higher and it fits better. On your comment on the comm unit speakers I had the same issue but put them under the cheek pad cover and they are perfect with plenty of room and the sound is not effected. This is how they designed it I'm told.
@AdventureRig

Hi Steven. Thank for your comment. It's funny, after doing this review I also found out about putting the speakers under the liner on the cheek pads. I didn't realise this until after taking the cheek pads out to wash the liner. It is now 100% better (only put 4,000 miserable miles on it before finding this out). And the bottom line is fit. So I would also buy the one that fits better because I think that one will do a better job protecting you how it is designed to do.

I've been intrigued by the Krios but concerned about its lack of shell sizes. I've always worn a Shoei small and like that they offer 5 shell sizes. Your comment on fit saved me from ordering online as I have a 55cm noggin. I like to see the development in ds helmets though

Thanks for the video. I had an original XD, loved it, replaced it after five years with an XD4 and don't love it. For some reason, it's much windier - inside - and I have air blowing on my eyes. Not a big deal for a short ride but after a day, it's not great. I'm going to check out the Klim. Oh, totally unrelated to helmets: did you shoot this video with a Panasonic GH5? I think the fit and finish is really great. I'm not a huge fan of how the cheek pads attach on the Klim (velcro and fitting into a lip on the underside). It just makes it a little more difficult to wash. However the added room for intercom speakers in the Klim is awesome. That alone is almost enough to persuade me to buy it. The Arai just doesn't provide much room for the speaker and it gets to be very unfortable.

@@AdventureRig I have already done the research. I listened to several podcasts on the subject including one with the director of Snell read everything I could find on the subject and I have come to the conclusion Snell is the most realistic and stringent standard to meet. ECE is no more than a modern version of DOT. I hold the Snell standard as the only standard I will trust my brain with. I encourage others to do the same but yes do your own research but I feel most people will come to the same conclusion.

I really like KLIM gear, but this helmet has not been my favorite. I think it comes with the pinlock because it really lacks ventilation. Mine fogs up much more than any helmets I have had in the past when the pinlock is out. I also wish the visor would stay open while riding. I cant get it to lock into any position over about 10mph. It just falls closed. Finally, the helmet fits great in the showroom but I developed some definite hot spots on my forehead after a couple of days using the helmet. My wishlist for KRIOS 2.0: -Better interior padding -More secure visor stop points so that you can ride with the visor cracked open. I love that my arai has a stopper that you can adjust on the visor -Better ventilation (I really cant tell when my vents are open or closed. They dont make much of a difference at all. With a few tweaks, this will be close to the perfect helmet.

Thanks for the comment Brent and I think you make some good points. I agree on the visor point. I don't like that it's first indent point is so far open. I just want to crack it when it starts to fog, not open it so far up that debris and wind gets through easily. However, my visor doesn't have any issues staying open in different positions at high speed. I personally didn't have any fitment issues. But that is obviously going to change from person to person.

Adventure Rig, thank you for this useful review. I am 57 cm fit so please clarify if you were buying the Kilim Krios again would you simply opt for the small rather than the medium? I really would appreciate your input as I reckon we have the same head size/shape. I wear a 57 cm medium Arai XD4 and that is a snug but comfortable fit by the way. Which helmet is quieter by the way?
@AdventureRig

The small and medium are actually the same shell if I recall correctly. I bought the medium and then changed the cheek pads to the same size that the small comes with. After that if fits great. Or you could buy the small and change the helmet liner to the next larger size. I "think" the Klim is a little louder then the Arai. I have a hard time telling sometimes though and that's been hard for me to really nail down (tested without ear plugs). I do wear ear plugs though so neither are that loud to me once I pop those in :).

I'm sorry, but this comparison is littered with inaccuracies. Snell is a much stricter certification than ECE. DOT certification is absolutely meaningless. Also, ECE is not a step up from DOT, ECE is a required certification for the European market, DOT is for the US market. Snell is in addition to DOT or ECE for racing applications. More room for speakers in a helmet that's too big for you means absolutely nothing. You'd need to compare helmets that both have a good fit. Comparing weight on two helmets where you've added weight through modifications on one is meaningless too. The least you could've done is remove the speakers, mic, and mount before you weigh the Arai.

@@jonathanweaver6725 Right, it's a track-focused rating that does not necessarily correlate to improved crash performance or what is best for the street. Have a drop-down internal visor? Can't be SNELL. Use something other than a D-ring for the strap? Can't be SNELL. If you want a helmet that has no features above a track helmet, definitely go SNELL. Otherwise, I think ECE is fine. I do wish SNELL had a slightly different rating that allowed for these things but perhaps we have enough standards already.

ece is eu standards. DOT is usa. snell on the other hand is a non profit org that does the certification. if klim has not done it, it means that they were not confident about the krios passing it. snell is also most updated one with a new release from the body in 2015. Man sorry you lost all credibility when you said that ece and snell are debatable- snell is what’s used in motogp, and the article you linked by bikebandit is about the only source that waffles on the topic- a simple google search will show you this and anyone that’s been around bikes knows that only the best and most expensive helmets get a snell rating while dot and ece are minimum test requirements to be sold in the us and Europe respectively. Also did you read that article you linked from bike bandit? It knocks Snell as a certification because it’s voluntary?! Talk about an unreliable source. The reason it’s voluntary is because it’s expensive to get a snell rating and is beyond what you need to sell a helmet in Europe and America. It’s literally a certification on top of a certification. There’s a great article by RevZilla that gives more depth and context of each certification and clearly states that Snell is the gold standard. I appreciate the effort but if you’re going to do this, don’t spread misinformation please!
