I try to make blade out of rusty old bike wheel spokes. First time forge welding such material. It was a great challenge , I almost failed a few times but I think I managed to make something cool at the end.

It's definitely not a bad knife, maybe some oil on the handle and it's done. I love the pattern, it's like a lightning in the knife!

Yes pretty cool pattern. I'll try to replicate on a bigger blade with some better steel :) Thank you for the nice comment

LoL. I was thinking, "That looks like a butter knife." Three seconds later you say the same thing. Nice work by the way. Not an ugly knife. It reminds me of the type of utility knife that would have been carried a couple hundred years ago; used for eating, skinning game, etc. Just a nice little secondary utility knife.

Nicely done. I was hoping you'd leave the rust on the spokes like Big Dog Forge did with some of his damascus products, but this came out well.
@RustLegion Жыл бұрын
the rust was very thick and I think that it would cause problems with the forge welding. I am not sure , maybe the flux would be enough to remove it when heated but I wanted to be safe :) and thank you for the nice comment :)

@RustLegion Жыл бұрын
I wanted to twist it and to fold it at least once or twice , but I should set up a vise next to my forge . And the material was not enough to fold. If I folded it, it would burn even more and leave me with very small peace. Maybe I needed 3 or 4 wheels :) And thank you for the positive comment :)

I really like what you did there, my only niggle is shortening the tang - where you could have left it long and peened the end of it and instead you drilled it to take a pin and compromised its strength. But still a great project!
@RustLegion Жыл бұрын
Thank you , It was not long enough to peen it , I had to weld threaded rod or extend the tang and I think for such a small and thin knife it is not necessary :) For my bigger blades I peen the tang or fix it with nut :)

What's the heat treatment/tempering that you used and how long? You've only shown that You've hardened the blade Also when you hardened it did you use Kerosene or was it something else?
@RustLegion4 ай бұрын
I heated it to non-magnetic and quenched in fast oil. Then I tempered 2 times at 200C 1 hour cycles

Καλησπέρα, θα ήθελα να ρωτήσω κάτι. Στην δουλειά μου έχουμε οδοντοτα μαχαίρια σε μια μηχανή που κόβει φρουτο. Δεν έχουν υποστεί θερμική σκλήρυνση μάλλον για να μην σπάνε και μένουν κομμάτια μέσα στο προϊόν. Μπορώ να κάνω σκλήρυνση σε κάποιο οστε να το μετατρέψω σε μαχαίρι για ψωμί;
@iLikeTrains0372Ай бұрын
The hardenableness test is something like that, am I right? You hardened it and didn’t temper it on purpose so that you would see this: If it did bend instead of breaking it would’ve been non-hardenable

Unfortunately I never forged tongs myself so I can't give you any advice but the sooner you make a pair - the better.

I always get skeptical when I see knives being made from scraps & it's hardness. But ig high hardness aren't that necessary in the end.
