Bushcraft Devotions shares a table top review of the Buck 124 Frontiersman - The Buck King!
Correction - upon further review it looks like the Black Leather Sheath for the Buck 124 is made in the U.S.A. as well!

Great review the 124 is now next on my list. I've owned my 120 for over forty years and just can't destroy this knife , it is a bear to sharpen but a great knife. Liked the added information at the end . God is great and people are crazy. I always choose God .

I have never owned a fixed blade buck knife. I have two lock blade folders from buck... the classic 110 and a 110 light with the green plastic handles... I purchased both when I was in my teens, now in my late 40's and both are holding up almost like new. They have preformed flawlessly and the 110 classic is on my hunting belt to this day, the 110 light is always in my camp box. Fit and finish of both knives is amazing.... Growing up in a family that always carried Scharade or Old Timers, It was a hard choice to go against all my mentors....on these two I am glad I did. I will pass them to my son when I no longer need them....

This is my second-favorite overall knife after my 36-year old 110. My 124 is from 1988. Almost flawless, but to my tastes the handle is too chunky and heavy. I've been wanting to grind the handle down, but as it's 32 years old, I am too afraid to ruin it.

Buck Knife's are the best, forget all that Super Steel stuff that wants you to believe that you need this steel or that steel, it is all a marketing game. The 420 hc from Buck is the best all around steel you will ever need. I used a 110 Folding Hunter for over 30 years, and the blade was grinned down to half of what it was due to constant use and sharpening, but it never let me down.

I’ve had 30 Buck knives. 2 more on order which will bring it back to 26 after I sold a few. As a kid all I had was traditional pocket knives, joined the CG in 1990 and got into more tacticool knives, now I’m back to more traditional knives again. The Bucks I have are all the classic series except the GCK and the CSAR-T.

I have the 124 , but prefer the buck 120 or 119 . I got my new buck 124 and removed knife scales and made new ones that fit my hand better . But , don’t use it much . I do a lot of hiking , camping and hunting . The buck 124 is a heavy knife . I am not to worried about full tang or rat tail tang the goes to the pommel of the knife . I have abused my 120 for around 45 years or more and still going strong . The buck 124 would make a good truck knife .

When Buck brought back this knife, I had to get it before it disappeared again. I love the full-tang construction and the hollow grind. Yes, the handle is a little big, but I won't be using this knife for super-delicate tasks, anyway. And I certainly won't be batoning with it, as only inbred KZfaqrs abuse knives in that way. The 124 makes an excellent camp knife and just feels good on your hip as you're walking through the woods. A big "Bowie-style" knife with the corrosion resistance of stainless steel and the ease of sharpening and toughness as carbon steel simply can't be beat.
@CSGraves
@CSGraves Жыл бұрын
I really love the look of the Frontiersman... that said, it's one of those knives that I've yet to find any practical use for. The handle is incredibly blocky, I could see it being fatiguing for extended use. The hollow grind is probably decent for slicing and whittling, though perhaps not robust enough for heavier work. The guard is a bit of an obstacle for many tasks. It's heavier than a lot of other knives that can do many given tasks better... be it my leuku, Mora, North Arm Lynx (in Magnacut!), etc... the Buck will resist corrosion better than all but the Lynx, but won't hold an edge as long as any of them. But... it really is a handsome looking specimen.

Very nice tabletop review sir👍 I also own this very knife but it's an older version with brown wood handle and brown leather sheath. I don't recall when I picked it up but it must have been in the late 80s or early 90s. It's a wonderful knife and what Buck does with the 420 steel is amazing!! I did however have to round off the edges on the handle quite a bit to make it comfortable to use...

Okay, got mine, and its a piece of ART in it's own right. I did try a chopping test, and the blade is way to light. All the weight is in the handle. It does however, split small stuff nicely. Okay, just got mine today. Its a very sharp knife, and I am looking forward to using it. As far as oiling the knife, that's a no brainier. But, you should also wipe down the leather sheath with mineral oil, to water proof it. Leather will last a very long time if taken care of. The only buck in the 100 Classic series, well two, I am missing the General, and the Skinner. Not sure if I will buy the Skinner though. But the General, yep, by the end of summer. I've been collecting Buck Sheath knives since the early 80's. And they are still great knives.

I still have my 112 (and pouch )I bought way back in 1983. I carry it with me most days. I did damage it in 1993 when I accidently dropped it onto a concrete floor and broke about 1.5mm off the tip. I reshaped it and you would never know I damaged it. It has 112 and U.S.A. stamped on the blade. I wouldn't be surprised if some Buck knife models now have China stamped on their blades, just like most stuff you buy nowadays.

@@michaelwittmann2644 Anytime! The problem for Buck and many American companies, are stores like Walmart, who demand items with dirt cheap price points, to compete with the Chinese crap, that Walmart brings in. That’s the reason Buck moved out of Commiefornia in the early 2000s. That state and its policies made it almost impossible to conduct business. Add to that a consumer base that demands cheap Chinese crap, and it’s a wonder companies like Buck survive at all. Buck makes solid products, at a very reasonable price, and they back it up. I’ve been a loyal customer for 50 years. I whole heartedly support Buck and it’s employees.

A little bit more history for those who may want it: As I understand it, the 122/124 is a design evolution of Frank Buck, who had a penchant for enormous blades. The first generation featured a steel pommel and crossguard, phenoolic grip with a hidden tang and smaller, more rounded comfy feel more like a 119, a near 7" blade and depending on who built it that day often a wicked hollow grind that terminates to an essentially unbreakably fat and strong tip. The blades used to be superior if more rust prone but still true stainless 440c, and were delivered with a note explaining why that was superior in balanced function to higher chrome content, like they oddly but understandably enough use now because most people neglect their knives more often than they carry or use them. The first gen ones stand out as a testament to the skill and passion of Frank Buck for making a brutally strong choppy slicey stabby knife that performs like a short sword in the size range of a small bowie. It is a true go anywhere, do anything design. The newer design is close, I just wish the current production ones weren't so blocky in the hand, featured a full size blade and had better steel as a standard option.

Buck’s Bos-treated 420HC almost reaches the edge retention of their old 440C, and it surpasses the edge retention of a lot of modern 440C offerings from other companies. Look into Cedric and Ada’s edge retention testing, Buck’s internal testing, and a myriad of other controlled tests that have shown similar results. In addition, Buck’s 420HC has vastly superior strength when compared to 440C, as shown in the charts and studies of Dr. Larrin, a world-renowned metallurgist. In fact, it isn’t even a close comparison. Buck’s newer knives, in Bos-treated 420HC, are objectively much tougher than their older ones in 440C. Factoring in the massive boost in corrosion resistance, it is easy to see that the Bos-treated 420HC is, in general, an upgrade to the original 440C.

Something I found out, not too long ago about oiling a knife. Use Pam Original non stick spray. Why, it kinda dries and leaves a very nice protective coat on the knife.

It is by no means a "Rat Tail" tang. It is an over molded tang, necked down just enough to get the guard on. I have the 118 Personal, the 105 Pathfinder, and the 119 Special, and I've used a magnet on all three. The tang goes all the way into the pommel. Just my two cents worth.

@@leejensen2574 I point you to this video, which shows it is a full length tang, with the handle going over the tang, thus a Over Molded Tang. You told me to check out a KZfaq video, now its up to you.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdWlfrpm2pO1fZs.html

Rat tail means that it gets narrower than the width of the blade and goes all the way back. A tapered tang tapers and doesn’t go all the way through the handle. knife-depot.com/pages/all-about-knife-tangs

Nice review ! I also have the 119 the 120 and 124. I like the full tang construction of the Frontiersman. But it is not the best chopper, it is not blade- but handle-heavy. :-( The knife is very heavy. For cutting tasks, I prefer the 119 , it is lighter on your belt, and I find it just a more functional knife. For heavy duty chopping and batoning tasks there are better bowie-style knives on the market.....

👎🏻 Nice video showing this beautiful knife. From an appearance perspective I can see why you like it so much. As with other Buck knives it appears to be well made from quality materials. After owning many fixed blade Buck knives, especially in the 80's, I recently decided to buy a 124 and I must say the knife is beautiful, it's manufactured date is September 2022. The sheath on the other hand is a piece of crap, regardless if it's Mexico or USA made as it's made of pleather from China and is rubbish compared to the actual USA made leather sheaths of the 80's. I know a lot of knife manufacturers are doing this to save a few dollars, but come on Buck knives start making real leather sheaths for your beautiful knives and stop false advertising your sheaths are real leather, you're a company that has belief in God and isn't it a sin or something to lie to others. I'm a leather crafter with over 45 years of experience so don't sit there and lie to me that your sheaths are top grain leather, it couldn't be more far from the truth. I personally would pay more for your knives if you made your sheaths of real leather. What do you think Buck knives, time to bring back quality or what?

This knife and the 120 are about useless . The Buck 105 and the 102 are field knives , very useful as is the 110 . The 120 and 124 are pig stickers , and now a days people use guns instead of knives. Seriously if gutting , cleaning ,fishing ,etc. etc. 110 or 120 ?? Cleaning a turkey 124 or 102 ?? Now if we had elephants I'd have to have the 124 or 120. If I needed a bear knife or such I'd buy the Cold Steel 1917 Frontier , now that's a bear knife if there ever was one. Cheaper too. And a heck of a lot more knife for the money. Peace.
