I'm glad you cleaned the knife prior to sharpening... I cut myself trying to get sharpie off a very sharp edge. The kicker was that alcohol was being used. (stung a bit) Thank you for the video. : )

Btw the progression was just to try these stones out. If i were doing a real sharpening with all my grits I would prob do 240, 1k, 2500. Or 400, 1200, 2500. These are just some new toys to throw in the arsenal.

@@Jef, ok. Thanks! May the fourth be with you, in about a month...

Jef, now that you've had most of a whole set of Gritomatic SiC stones a while, do you still recommend the 240 / 1k / 2500 combo as your preference? Is there a substantial difference between the 1k and 1200 stones if you were looking to do a progression of for example 240 -> 600 -> 1200 -> 2500 in the Gritomatic line?
@Jef4 жыл бұрын
Yea. The 240, 1k , 2500 is just a solid three stone set. If out of stock 400, 1200, 2500 would suffice. There isnt enough difference between the 1k and 1200 to warrant concern. Both would fill each others roles nicely.
@JayLoden4 жыл бұрын
@@Jef Awesome - thanks for the fast reply. Gritomatic is out of stock on the 240 and the 1k currently which is what prompted me to ask given several of the stones being so close in grit rating. Great content man... I appreciate your straightforward, honest feedback and your open mind & willingness to experiment for yourself. Really enjoy your videos and they're very helpful.

Jef, question for ya! If I was looking to get one of their stones as a field sharpener, what would be your pick? Looking for something quick and aggressive that can also make an arm shaving edge. Had good luck with norton's 240 grit india stone but think I'd like to try a SiC from gritomatic, not sure how fine/coarse of an edge it leaves. I can tell you 240 diamond or even 400 diamond doesn't leave as nice an edge as 240 alox
@Jef2 жыл бұрын
Sic isn’t gonna leave as fine an edge as alux. Just the nature of it. For field sharpening i would prob go with the 240 or 400. Aggressive enough to remove damage quickly. The edge will be toothy and have tons of bite. 400 of course, will be a little finer, yet stil be able to get rid of some chips. Gonna depend on how hard you use your gear. Me, i chip the hell out of mine. It would be 240 all the way.

Thanks for the video. I'm considering adding the #600, #1200, & #2500 Gritomatics to my lineup for finishing S35VN 58-60HRC fixed blade knives from Spartan Blades, after establishing the bevels on a Norton India stone. The only question I have, is how can these stones be flattened if they eventually start to dish?
@Jef3 жыл бұрын
Check out my new video on flattening the venev diamond stones. Exact same thing with india. You may have to rinse and refresh the sic powder once or twice but thats how ya do it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qc6irdpmlrzbnKs.html

Get you some CMT blade and bit cleaner. I use it for my axes and all kinds of stuff. Works as a protectant as well. It’s basically like goo-gone on steroids, non-toxic an all that. These stones are on the list but I think vitrified cbn stones might take priority. Which did you like better? I know the cbn stones are stupid expensive but I wants em lol.
@Jef5 жыл бұрын
I’ve only used TripleB’s Cbn stones. They were awesome in feedback and feel. However, I never got them to give me blistering edges. I compared them back n forth between the Gritomatic Sic, and I don’t think Cbn ever gave me a better edge.
@rockets4kids2 жыл бұрын
Do you notice any differences between the 1000 and the 1200 aside from the grit? Often when there are two stones in a line very close in grit the difference is in the binder and/or feel of the stone. I was wondering if that is the case here.
@Jef2 жыл бұрын
I think this was the one, and only time, I ever used the 1200. Couldn't honestly say, one way or another. If you would like, I could do a side by side, with the scope, and describe feel.
@rockets4kids2 жыл бұрын
@@Jef That would be awesome! I just stumbled back to this video, found that the 120 is a soft(ish?) stone in another comment, so I want to pick one of those up, and while I'm placing an order, well, you know how that goes...
@rockets4kids2 жыл бұрын
@@Jef Also, if possible, try to compare them after the effects of surface conditioning have worn away. That is to say, what the stone settles in to in use.
@artrabin4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jef, can you use a nagura stone to recondition or to clean these Gritomatic stones? Or do you have to buy their silicon powder?
@Jef4 жыл бұрын
You can use it on the finer grits (1k and 2500). Not sure how well it would work, on say 400 and 600, however. Those are much coarser than the Nagura, and therefor, would wear through it quickly. The sic powder is best for flattening the stones, when they dish, as well as, conditioning the surface. If you are just trying to clean the surface, another sic stone, would work, as will the sic powder. I have several small pieces of sic stones, that have been cut, to serve as naguras. A hacksaw, and a cheap hardware store stone, will get ya where ya need to go, if you are looking to replicate it.

Jef Jewell The reason I asked is that I noticed on their website they sell a Gritomatic Bodrid Dressing Stone.
@hidude21245 жыл бұрын
I think I dm this to you but suehiro has a 8000 grit stone which IS silicon carbide. 2500 to 8000 is a bit of a gap, and the stone is exclusively 1x6 TO MY LIMITED KNOWLEDGE. It’s sold on gritomatic

I realize they aren't grit-for-grit comparisons, but how to you compare the Norton Crystolon stones with the Gritomatic ones?
@Jef5 жыл бұрын
Norton seem to be a bit more friable than the Gritomatic. They are more porous as well. That is, they don’t hold water as well as the Gritomatic. It is why oil works so well, on Norton. They are all fast, work well with low pressure, and cut just about anything you put against them. The Gritomatic are like gourmet Jelly Belly, as opposed to plain jane jelly beans from Norton. They just have that little bit of extra, that makes them better. The cost reflects that. Although both brands are very affordable, in my opinion

How are the ethos on that? The handle looks so small on the mudd. I’m not sure my hand would fit it just size large hands. What do you think?
@Jef5 жыл бұрын
The handle is actually quite large. They would fit Xl hands. It is deceptive, I think, due to the scale sitting proud of the frame. Ergos are excellent. Very comfortable knife. The jimping is good, and no hot spots. I wear a large size glove, and when gripping the knife, there is about half an inch, to an inch (if I choke up), of handle room. It maybe ugly, but it works well. It's became my go to work knife.

@@Jef 120 stones in general are friable. But this one is more friable than the shapton pro 120
@rockets4kids2 жыл бұрын
Ooh, that sounds like it might be a winner for me! By my standards the Shapton Pro 120 is a relatively hard stone, so if it is even close to that it might be harder then I want. It isn't until you get to stones like the Naniwa Traditional 220 that I would call "too soft."
