The head and arm choke, or arm triangle, is one of the most versatile tools to have in your grappling arsenal. This submission is high-percentage and can be set up from many positions in many different ways. This video outlines some of the most useful places and times to use it.
Jared Jessup and I, both 2nd degree black belts, collaborate on this video to show some of our favorite, and what we believe to be the most helpful, setups of this choke.

@@KnightJiuJitsu Hi. Yesterday I used some strange arm triangle choke. I don't even know how I did it. Left hand behind his neck, right on the front. I grabbed my right forearm and left shoulder with my right arm. Then I just threw him on the ground and kinda used my body weight. He said stop after maybe 10 seconds. I just wanted to know if something like that exists in Jiu Jitsu. Sorry about my bad English.

As always. Great technical and very informational. So many tools and adaptation for different mounts and positions. Now I just need to look and see the tools in my toolbox. Oh and by the way thanks for pointing me in the right direction for turtle guard. I learned armbar from turtle. But the main move sets up armbar kimura amerikhana wristlock. That’s just from the roll. I showed this where I train and everywhere flipped out. I was Eli knight for about 30 mins. Showing everyone the move. All thanks to you.

I’ve learned to love turtle guard. And the only person that does it where I train. Said to others that I have a very good turtle guard. While it’s not great to some. It does provide time to recover or just wait out the clock. Now I’m looking for attacks from being in turtle gaurd. I bet there are many ways to attack from it. Sounds like a technical video. Hmmm. Who do I know on KZfaq that does precise technical videos. ??????

Eli. Would you say training to get points. Like in a tournament. Is in fact setting yourself up for submissions. I have a tourney I want to join in November. But at the place I train. Everyone spare for what seems to be submissions. Which is ok. But I think I need to change my direction of training. And focus more on points. So do you agree that focusing on getting points is in deed setups for submissions. Or am I thinking something wrong. I ask cause I value your opinion. Have a good evening.

It's funny to this day when people do the anaconda choke they roll the person. When I perfected that move 4yrs ago I realized i don't have to roll them over just roll yourself to the same side of the choking hand and you are in the same position as doing it the traditional way. But it's a lot faster and you use less energy TIP OF THE DAY LOL

The arm triangle gets so little attention, which is a shame. It's one of the least flashy and complex submissions, yet one of the easiest and safest to use against an unskilled opponent, particularly if you can get mount. 9 times out of 10 when an inexperienced grappler pushes their arms out to defend themselves when they're mounted, BJJ people go for the arm-bar, but why put yourself in a position where you might have to break somebody's arm and _still_ have to keep fighting them (or maybe get the crowd off-side and out for blood if he's screaming and holding his broken arm) when you can maintain the dominant, top position, maintain a good level of control, and peacefully send them to sleep?
@justicetom9844
@justicetom9844 5 жыл бұрын
U really wanna be face down when there's an easily riled up crowd watching?.
@WeAreSoPredictable
@WeAreSoPredictable 5 жыл бұрын
@@justicetom9844 No, of course not. Fortunately by just choking out a dude instead of, say, breaking his arm, the crowd's unlikely to be riled up. If the crowd is likely to be hostile regardless, there are no great submissions at all anyway, but face down with a quick transition to side control and my head close to my opponent's seems scarcely worse than something like an arm-bar leaving my whole head exposed for a good soccer kick from almost any angle. Americans, Kimuras, heel-hooks, etc all leave the head just as exposed, and if the opponent decides to scream and wail it's going to be a bad look. Mounted triangle is probably the next best thing to an arm triangle, but a little trickier to set up and disengage from. Either way, one of the big advantages of triangle chokes is that they don't _look_ so bad to onlookers. Straight-up strangling somebody from mount might not be very effective, but it _looks_ bad to people with no idea. But doing some weird huggy-hold where the guy just goes to sleep, especially if it's an obvious response to an up-punch from a mounted opponent, is far more likely to bewilder than concern any onlookers. It all depends on who we are, what we look like, the environments we're likely to have to use such techniques, etc, so what's optimal for me in my life may not be for you in your life. And you we may just flat-out disagree with each other. If you've got a better, high-percentage, benign-looking, crowd-friendly submission that you think is a better, let me know. Maybe I just never considered it, and I'm always looking to improve my _"Just in case..."_ game plan.
