Using the Portuguese style of knitting in fair isle is a unique way to keep both strands of yarn easily going at once.

Thank you for your videos on portuguese knitting. I am from Portugal living in the US right now, but that is how I knit since I was a little girl and I love it. I think it is easier than other styles and it is easier to get the tension uniform. I have learned so much from your videos even when you are not knitting in the portuguese style. Thumbs up to you and keep up the awesome videos you make. Thank you. Carla Sa' Ward

I just completed an icelandic pattern yoke sweater using the method of the background colour in my right hand to throw over and the contrast colour in my left for continental knitting. It was a first project doing colour strand work and was quite pleased with the results. However, I can see that this method would be somewhat easier to do and thank you for preparing such a wonderful demonstration about it. Therefore you can teach an old dog new tricks!!

This is by far the simplest way to knit fair isle for me...easy on the hands, neater...I've been knitting Portuguese style for decades, it is how I was taught by my mom, I'm also a thrower, and I can knit continental. Just because I think it's good to know different ways to hold the yarn and needles, but I have to say that still "for me" Portuguese style is the easiest, and not because I am Portuguese lol...thank you Stacy as always you are a phenomenal teacher.

Stacy, if knitters are privy to the Microsoft Excel Software for spreadsheets, the newer versions have a way to flip/snap your chart/picture to mirror image after you convert your chart to Excel. After converting your PDF to Excel, go up and click on the "View" tab, and go from there to snap it to mirror image. That way you can begin your chart inverted correctly and read as usual, left to right. Sorry if this sounds confusing, but I had to flip a Craftsy Fair Isle vest chart recently & it worked great. If you have A.D.D. It works wonders. I can't do it without flipping it. Thanks

Hi, Staci, I've probably commented on this somewhere, but I was looking for knitting & purling backwards (with needles, not needle-hooks), and rewatched this. I have trouble with the float tension, and just realized that you stretch things out, when you change colors. COOL! I'm working on locking my floats every 2 sts, and haven't gotten that tech down yet. Thanks for all your wonderful vids.

This a fantastic tutorial for portuguese fair isle knitting. However we (portuguese style knitters) also have ways to knit with both strands on the right side, and back and forth (knitting on the RS and purling on the WS). I have to thank you for teaching this style because it is fantastic! I learned to knit portuguese style (because I am portuguese and that is how I always saw other knitters around me knit) and recently learned to knit fair isle with both strands accross my neck (I don't use pins) and it is quite easy to knit on the RS and purl on WS, without getting the two strands entangled. For me it is easier because I use a lot of patterns that are written in english and by continental/english designers. So for me it was complicated to be "converting" the knit stitches to purl stitches so I could knit on the wrong side... but then someone taught me how to do it on the right side and turn my work and purl on the wrong side, and vice-versa.

Thanks, Naná. There are a few different ways to knit Portuguese fair isle, and I think I tried all of them and experimented with my own tweaks as well - this is the method that I decided to present because I think it is the easiest with the nicest payoff for Continental/English/American knitters. I appreciate your input - other folks might benefit by trying what you've suggested.

Please, do more of these. I am struggling to make socks in Portuguese knitting. I only use this style because it doesn't hurt my hands and wrists. Figuring out how to reverse patterns to purl socks instead of knit them is frustrating. How would we translate knit heavy patterns into purl friendly ones? If you could do a video on what stitch to replace, for instance, do we just do we P2Tog when they say SSK?

Stacy, I have completed multiple stranded color knitted projects in the past couple of weeks. My greatest frustration was having to weave in over 100 loose ends but I figured out that if I just Incorporated the new color (sometimes having three or four color setups) and trapped it like I would a float for about 30 stitches before it needed to be used, then I did not have to weave in any ends at all! I do the same for colors that I am finished with. I continue to trap them as I would floats for 30 or so stitches and never have to weave in any ends. I'm telling you this because I found it extremely helpful and efficient but I personally have no interest in creating a video. Please let me know if you want me to further explain what I mean. BTW, I learned how to knit through your KZfaq channel about 6 months ago.

@MustacheMrs
@MustacheMrs 5 жыл бұрын
(I know this is a year too late, but for other wondering the same...) The way I do and learned it, to change colours you only have to knot the new colour to the main colour, and place it as close to the working needle (right needle in my case) as possible. Don't knot it too tight, and later you can just weave it in your knitting to hide it. It works for me.
