One time the police came to my house. I avoided getting busted. Here's how.

Disclaimer 1: I am in no way affiliated with Flex Your Rights. I simply found their videos useful.
Disclaimer 2: The legal information in this video is no substitute for professional counsel from a licensed attorney. Laws change, they vary from state to state (not to mention country to country), and asserting your rights in a calm and respectful manner is still no guarantee against police misconduct. I cannot be held responsible for the consequences of any person's reliance on the information presented in this video.
Also, a note. The moral of this story is not "F*ck tha Police," or some other juvenile slogan. In fact, I believe most law enforcement officers are decent people who are simply trying to do the job they have sworn to do. However, it is important for citizens to remember that a police officer's job is NOT to carefully guide you through your constitutional rights. Their job is to find people engaged in illegal activity, arrest them, and assist in convicting them.

Oh, and we did find out which neighbor called the cops on us. After the officers left, we went back out onto the patio and chatted for a few more minutes (with no music on). Suddenly, a rock about the size of a softball came hurtling over the back fence and landed in the grass. We were all stunned, as you might imagine, and said something like, "What the fuck?" As we approached the fence, the neighbor, a woman in her 50s, said something about it being late (it wasn't THAT late, really) and us being loud (we weren't anymore), and then she went back inside. I decided that she wasn't going to get away so easily with literally casting stones, so I took one of my friends over with me to her front door. When she answered, she kept the lights off in her house, so we could only see her outline through the screen door. Her speech, however, indicated clearly that she had had slightly more than the 1.5 glasses of red wine that doctors recommend for middle-aged women. She said some horse shit about us bothering her as she was "trying to read the Gospel," and then my friend and I proceeded to give her a spectacular tongue-lashing, during which I told her, among other things, that despite me being 19 and her being 50-whatever, I felt that I was behaving like more of an adult in the situation. (One thing to keep in mind with respect to my and my friends' anger was that she couldn't see over the fence when she threw that rock, so she had no way of knowing that it wouldn't hit someone.) After a couple of minutes, her (I assume long-suffering) husband intervened and said something like, "All right, let's just end it there." I got the distinct impression that he was quite pleased to let us unload on his beloved, but didn't want to let things go too far. I then walked with my friend back to my house, feeling even more triumphant than I had when I shooed the police away.

No, not proud for what you did to the lady. Immature and not respectful. No one got hurt, so don’t give it attention. The lady is wrong but that gives you no reason to argue with a 50 year old women who is weak and possibly sick. Shame on you and go say sorry if she’s still alive. Truly bizarre. I hadn't thought about this in years, and then randomly a few nights ago i spent at least a few minutes remembering the way that woman flew into hysterics about The Gospel when confronted for chucking that boulder over the fence. My brother gets this video as a random recommendation just like 35 hours later and sends it to me. Weird stuff. This is a 100% true story though, and it saved me a possession charge at 19 or whatever probably. Disagree with the depiction of my hair.

This reminds me of a time when I was in my teens, there was a party down the street from my house, I was making out with a girl next to my Dad's car in our driveway and a police officer asked me to if this is where I lived, I replied, "Yes" then he asked me to step onto the sidewalk so he could talk to me, I replied, "No Sir, I am on my property and that is where I am staying". They asked me, to tell them my address and I answered that question as I walked into my backyard through our gate, saying "good night officer". Good story, thanks for sharing.

Just throwing this comment in here because you didn't mention it in the video. You don't have to let officers in/on your property if they ask. This is correct. HOWEVER this does not apply to cars. If an officer asks you to step out, you HAVE to step out. Also, officers can look in the windows of your car or house without a warrant, and use anything in clear sight as evidence against you.
@leo29hornsfan
@leo29hornsfan 5 жыл бұрын
As a former Leo I can tell you one thing just keep your mouth shout and don’t answer any questions period. If they ask you anything just tell them that you have not committed a crime and ask them to leave the property immediately unless you have a warrant. The whole key thing is not to incriminate yourself in anything and we are trained to do that. If you plead the fifth and stay quiet then there’s nothing a cop can do and will eventually leave. Don’t even open the door at all. Another thing if you do open the door and step back and they come in you basically invited them into your home and now they can search it.

Good for you ! Personally had to learn that lesson the hard way as a younger teen. Thou it did come in handy a few times later in life, road stop, argument with a neighbour, coming back from skeet shooting and even an attempted armed robbery where I worked(crazy story). In all those times the police tried lying and small talk to get information they didn't have the right to have. Like yourself I was scared the first time but it sure gets easier when you know your rights and what to do.

I'm a girl!!! I live here! Cops: Where! Me: I point a head. Cops: Well go home. Me: I cross the street and run towards my house. Knock on my door like the cops were after me... because they fucking were! Dad let's me in. Cops: Didn't get back into their car and drive off into I was inside my house. My Dad: Why are you crying? Oh, man. I had a very similar thing happen to me but it ended way worse... Several years ago, I lived in a house with 7 other friends where we had basement shows almost every weekend, sometimes multiple times. Afterwards, our close friends would typically stay to hang out. So one night, the show had ended and probably at the most 12 people were left (like 10% maybe of what had been there not long ago) and we were all upstairs. One of my friends came over to me and said he had seen cops poking around my backyard with flashlights, so I grabbed my closest roommate, Jen, and we both went down to the backyard to see what they were doing. When we got out there, they were searching our backyard with flashlights, clearly looking for a joint or something incriminating. Understandably, we said something along the lines of “wtf are you doing here?” And they said they got a call about us making a lot of noise. I responded, “Well, does it sound like we’re making a lot of noise?” Honestly, we had been making a lot of noise, loud punk band + small basement insulated with old mattresses = fracking LOUD, but we weren’t making any noise now so I wasn’t going to admit to anything. One of them asked if we were having a party and we told them we only had a few friends over. Here is where it turns to poop... My roommate Jen and I are both very short, petite girls, so as if they had done this routine before, the cops start playing like they’re worried about us “two little ladies.” “What if you can’t get everyone to leave? Do you want us to help you kick them out? We’re worried about you poor helpless women” Okay, slight exaggeration in my wording of that last part, but it’s what they were trying to say) We told them first of all, they’re our friends, they will leave when we ask them. And secondly, even if they didn’t we have 6 other roommates that all happen to be guys. We told the cops this not because we relied on them to do that kind of thing, Jen and I are tough b’s, but we were hoping it would get them off our backs. One of them replies, “Okay, well, we’re worried about you so can you just meet us at the front door with two of your roommates so we know you’ll be okay?” Begrudgingly, we went along, which I will always regret, because when the 4 of us went to the front door, they didn’t say a word to us, just handed us each a 500$ noise violation citation. Side note, legally they’re supposed to only do one per house, but this is a crooked city with even more crooked cops so that was never brought up. Long story short, Jen’s dad is a lawyer and he helped us in court so two of the violations were dropped, mine and Jen’s because we were under 21 at the time. I have no idea what this had to do with anything, they basically assumed we were serving alcohol but this isn’t how basement shows work. It’s BYO-everything, we supply the music, that’s it. This is a college town, too, where frats date rape college girls at an alarming rate, but their parties are rarely busted and when they are the cops just high five all the guys and never give a ticket. We ended up having a benefit show or something to pay off the two citations, but I’ll always resent the police in this city after that extremely sexist and manipulative interaction. Needless to say, I and my friends have had too many negative interactions with the police here, many worse than this, but your story reminded me of how I wish I had handled the situation differently so I didn’t ended up getting two of my friends in trouble. Sorry for how long this was!

Half a year ago, a couple of cops showed up at my door, saying that my dog had been running around in the middle of the road, and wanted me to admit guilt right away so they could "let me off with a warning". Apparently someone had called them and complained about it, and the cops were very insistent that it had to have been my dog, since it was reported at my address. Of course I straight up denied any such thing happening, due to the simple fact that my dog very rarely goes anywhere I'm not, cuz she's spoiled and got daddy issues, tho she does once in a while go out to the mailbox and take a sniff, since other dogs urinate on it, and she comes back right away. Since it's not against the law, even if she goes out to the sidewalk as long as I got her under control, I didn't have a problem being honest about that. But the cops wouldn't have it, and kept insisting that she'd been running around out on the road, so I started asking them questions, while I had the dog behind the glass door so they couldn't have a problem seeing her being there, tho the lights were off inside.. When I started asking questions, one of the cops started getting annoyed and now instead of a "warning" which clearly weren't their intent to begin with, they just wanted me to admit guilt so I could get a fine, they threatened with charging me for not keeping my dog under control. But I kept pushing.. Now, my dog is a yellow labrador, which the cops couldn't clearly see, since it was bright outside, and she was standing in a hallway with no lights on, so she looked a lot darker than she is, and the cops were getting a bit riled up at some point and suddenly one of them blurted out "listen, we were being nice, but someone reported a brown dog running around in the road, outside your house, so you're gonna get charged with letting your brown dog do that" (or something along those lines, I was high I don't remember exactly), So I turned the lights on in the hallway and started laughing. Cuz, well, he had just lied about the colour, and he'd have had to admit that in court. I felt glorious as they went back to their car absolutely pissed.. They expected being able to hand out a quick fine and be on their way, instead they met with a guy who knew how to handle cops (as it wasn't my first time being "charged" with bullshit, and I have cops in my family.) and they wasted 30 minutes of their time.

Isn't it kind of sad that we live in a world where being a hero is avoiding the authorities which pretend to be the actual heroes?

you got extremely lucky. i had something similar happen and i cracked the door open as i told them they are not allowed inside and they forced the door open and walked in while smiling. whatever that cop writes down in his report is what "actually happened" in the eyes of the law if you don't have video proof

When I was new to driving, I was slapped with a ticket which to me at the time was a full week of pay, and had to take a driving class so that I didn’t get points on my license. Why? Because I panicked after a non-destructive fender-bender. The other vehicle involved had their turn signal on, and I tried to enter the busy road because I had assumed they were turning when they really weren’t. A 3rd party wanted attention, so she called the police, and bragged to her friends about it on the phone while we talked to the police. I was the one who was in trouble because I panicked and said it was all my fault. If I known then what I know now, I probably wouldn’t have had to pay as much, but the other car blamed me because I was already confessing and they didn’t want to pay. Even when we are trying to follow the rules, we need to know our rights and keep a cool head! I don’t blame the officer who was just doing his job, but I wish the bystander hadn’t panicked, and I wish I had told my story instead of feeling guilty. Stay safe!
