They spent the money because it was in their budget, and as public employees there is no incentive to save taxpayer money and send excess dollars back to the state treasury. Next year, they will simply ask for a 5 or 10 percent increase or a budget override....and squander that money too.

This is exactly correct. Its very common for govt departments to spend all their budget for the year, regardless if items are needed or not, so that they do not run the risk of having their budget reduced the following year... I worked in sales and we sold to lots of govt agencies, including Chicago police, who would go bonkers in June buying unnecessary equipment and leases, just spending the last of their $$ before fiscal year end....

This happens in every City and State and Federal agency and we need someone to watch them and hold them accountable for wasting Tax dollars and possible corruption because sometimes items disappear from their inventory. Lock them up.

Take home cars. He was called in after hours three times in the last year. That is about $10,000 per call if not more. Call a stretch limo. It would be 1/10th the cost of his take home car.

With the experience I had with an audit of Arizona's DPS and other agencies, look for the same backhoe, same serial number, in another agency's budget too. It's all about missing money, a LOT of it.

Here in N. Idaho the city hall is one of the buildings in town, the cop cars are all new and the best they can buy, fire station and engines are all new etc. and yet they want to raise taxes saying the city is broke. Typical government waste and misuse of funds causing distrust and division amongst the taxpayers.

It cost more to replace fire trucks, police cars and emergency buildings the longer you wait. Costs of building materials, labor, parts for vehicles goes up and up. If you have new fire stations, police cars and fire trucks there is a reason for it. They needed it. It cost a lot to upkeep old equipment and buildings. My towns firehouse is a travesty. It’s very very old and has out lived it’s use. They actually bought a trailer for the chief and a tarp carport for his car. Like Really!!!!!! But the taxpayers refuse to pay for a new one. Yet they complain that Fire response times are low and we don’t have enough manpower. Who would want to work in a dump…. How about stop being cheap and just replace the stuff…..

You need to remember that this is on the public news channel so just because there KZfaq video doesn't get views doesn't mean no one knows about it. What really needs to happen is the news needs to replay these and keep up with these issues and not just play them once or twice and then people forget about it.

This is how a yearly budget works. If you do not spend all the funds allocated to you in a given time period, the amount that us left over unspent will be deducted from the next spending cycle, so, in this case, waste is built into the system.

I’m not buying it. They said the mayor signed the checks, why is he signing for bed purchases. Make an example of it because I’m sure they have a whole purchasing system there got just going rogue call in the office supply store to spend $3400 on chairs. My small private college just bought four chairs for $1400. All those purchases have to be approved before they are made not after. The mayor needs to stop signing the checks and put a stop to this crazy purchasing.
