@Kuddlesnot I may well have been one of those making comments about no talking. But somehow, sometime between when I fist started watching your DS2100% and the end of it, you... grew on me. What I had first considered inane prattle somehow became endearing. To the point that now, when I first noticed you had done DS3 a few days ago, I actually did a little skip of joy. Mid fn 40's and I got excited like a damn child lol

I think it is that the "inane prattle" seems very close to stream-of-consciousness type stuff, and that consciousness seems to be genuinely kind and kind of genuine.

I like her being on Earth for a couple of reasons, one being that, from a storytelling aspect, Earth is the core catalyst, as is humanity's place in this grand design; every action by our heroes and every reaction to them can be traced back to it, be it in motivation or the consequences thereof. With 2 centering around Death ultimately allowing for the rebirth of mankind, 3 explores that importance and the reason why this all happens. I mean, Death basically sacrificed himself AND most of his kin for a race of beings whose existence or destruction itself would be of little consequence to him; the value in an act that extreme, the logic behind it, therefore, should be explored. Going off to other worlds makes saving the Earth and ultimately the balance a peripheral effort instead of the main focus. And while I would've loved to be able to use Rampage, removing him, at least to me, made Fury seem more "vulnerable," more like the humans she begrudgingly helps, since the horses kind of give the Horsemen this almost godlike aura; I mean, creating vortexes via hollow-borne atmokinesis and going pyrokinetically super saiyan doesn't engender impressions of humanness either, mind you, but having to traverse the world on foot makes her interactions with the world seem more palpable, more organic, especially with humanity. Finally, we, this time, actually get to explore a lot more OF Earth; yeah, we were on Earth in Darksider's 2, but it's kinda hard to focus on exploring when you're having to play a sudden game of Fortnite against a horde of incessantly ravenous hordes in a downpour of rain and eldritch bugs, and the DLC wasn't exactly open-world. And even in Darksiders 1, you saw the planet as the dead husk we will ultimately return to, I am sure, once the story progresses; seeing a world that has been "newly destroyed" and remnants of its people scattered throughout said world, and seeing remnants of what that world once was as it's enveloped by overgrowth, it all gives it a sense of newfound loss and the melancholy that haunts the area...Also, it's nice being able to get to subway stations without having to worry about the overcrowding and long lines, homicidal cockroaches aside.
@Kuddlesnot
@Kuddlesnot Жыл бұрын
I LOL'd at the last line about the subway. That is a nice fantasy for sure. I make these comments from the position that anything not in the games is "Schrodinger's Canon", coined on the discord, meaning that things portrayed outside of the games may be canon, but also just as likely not. There is evidence for both equally. Overall I agree with your points of the benefits of DS3 taking place on Earth, but doesn't justify the "missed opportunity". First, a few thoughts: I personally don't think the choice for Death to sacrifice himself and the souls of the Nephilim was for a race of little consequence to himself - humanity is literally the reason for the initial betrayal of the Nephilim, as they stormed Eden to take a realm for themselves (and away from humanity) and the Four Horsemen were created from betrayers of their own kind to prevent the destruction of Humanity, as they needed time to grow to become on par with the Angels and Demons, aka the Balance (Angels, Humans, Demons at equal power for the Apocalypse). If he chose to resurrect his kin instead of humanity, that would have been contradictory to every choice he had made up to this point. While there is the obvious selfish motivation to resurrect the Nephilim and possibly alleviate his guilt and no longer be "alone", he made his choice long ago to serve The Balance. And as we learn from all of the other horseman through their journeys, their true loyalty is to that one tenet of the Creator - not to the Charred Council or anything else (although they don't realize that at the time.) That is what I feel the ultimate arc of the Horseman and these stories is meant to tell - that these four agents of The Creator (although thinking they are of the Charred Council) discover their true purpose, while maturing (most obviously in DS3) and unraveling the machinations and scheming of all these other beings, to discover their own true purpose. Humanity represents that purpose in the most fundamental way - that they need protection and guidance to fulfill their purpose as deemed by the Creator. So, all this comes around to "Did Fury's journey to discover this purpose NEED to happen exclusively on a newly destroyed Earth?" I believe the answer is a resounding NO. To show the vulnerability of Fury, did she NEED to lose Rampage? The answer I believe is another resounding NO. We already know humanity has traveled between worlds before - between Eden and Earth most evidently. So similar to other beings, while they might have a "home realm", they are not limited to that realm. They are limited to Earth currently due to not being fully ready for the Apocalypse yet, but their impact on the "worlds" is not limited to Earth. The fact that the whole premature Apocalypse happens essentially because of Abaddon's fear that Angels would not win if Humanity came to it's full power. That could have been explored in many, many ways while humanity and the balance is the core focus. I don't think we should have never been on Earth, and definitely more intimately than the shooting sequence of DS2, but there was so much more to explore. We can show Humanity as the core motivation, not a peripheral one, without needing to once again be exclusively on a destroyed Earth. Even DS1 showed more about the different worlds - other than the Maker Tree, we don't learn a lot about the larger Darksiders universe. We can show Fury being vulnerable in different ways while still using her horse. More about her relationship with her brothers. More about her activities (or lack thereof) while in isolation. Even more obviously, to your point, showing her vulnerability in situations where Rampage couldn't help her - a distinct different in power and abilities without Rampage. All of the other games show their horses as a way to travel, but can't do a lot of damage while on horseback, just move faster. Fury and Rampage could have been different. Years of isolation together, with her "furious" drive to be the most powerful horseman leading the group, obviously stemming from a strong internal insecurity, could have made her together with Rampage a huge force to be reckoned with. Instead, and I believe stemming from budgetary and scope reasons, not story ones, Rampage is just poof, gone. That all being said, with those budgetary and scope restraints, this journey on Earth is a pretty smart way to utilize those resources. Evidence being many of your points Bloodlust. So while I mourn the lost opportunity for what might be the last mainline Darksiders game, I do enjoy this journey immensely. The story overall is pretty lackluster in the grand scheme of the lore, but the biggest thing it does well is the emotional growth and arc for Fury. That was necessary and done effectively. I didn't really proofread this so it might be a bit ramble-ly, but those are some of my thoughts!

@@Kuddlesnot Thanks for the reply, and I am going to watch the newest episode very soon, probably later today. When I said it was of no consequence to him, I meant personally; Death on more than a few occasions in the game he was in made it clear that if it didn't directly affect him, he wasn't necessarily interested in helping. Karn makes these clear when he said that Death saving their realm and doing all the things asked of him is simply for the sake of getting to the Tree. Indeed, even the saving of humanity was done purely for War's sake. I do believe, though, as pointed out by Oran, that Death does have a softer side, and I believe he may have become a bit more concerned as time in the game went on, but while he, like the rest of the Horsemen, is dedicated to the Balance, there is kind of a clinical devotion to it, kind of like with Fury, though less admonishing of humankind, as opposed to Strife, whose devotion to the Balance seemed at least partly rooted in an organic connection to the humans he hid among. In short, Death and Fury, at least initially, seemed to be devoted to the Balance for its own sake. Fury seemed to sum it up when she said that while she fought for the Balance, that did not include Humanity (in the grand scheme of the story, it obviously does, but as far as her and Death's duty is concerned, not really, it seems). I think the same holds true for Death; had War not been in jeopardy, then humanity's existence or destruction would have been of little to no importance to his personal sense of duty to the Balance, though I do think that he and Fury, and ultimately, even War, would/will develop an organic and empathic connection to Humanity and a deeper sense of what the Balance is, protecting it because they are connected to it as opposed to merely being assigned to it.

@@Kuddlesnot Me too lol! Also, looking forward to seeing you fight lust when i watch the rest of part six. Their dialogue and way if speaking is, i swear, what u look forward to most often during my runs. The voice actor captures this unique seduction, but not something sexual, rather a tone that makes one immediately understand how they can make a person abandon their ideals for darker gains. And the way they reveal to Fury her true feelings (on some level) and piss her off is DELICIOUS LOL.

I agree that the lore and multiple worlds of Darksiders 2 was more interesting than retreading post-apocalyptic Earth. The interesting thing was how all four of the main worlds of Darksiders 2 are also falling into ruin. The Kingdom of the Dead is overflowing with the souls of humans and the Lord of Bones' servants had abandoned him due to the Corruption he dismissed, Lostlight is falling to Corruption and seemingly has only Nathaniel and the Archon (and Jamaerah) left inhabiting it, the Maker's realm is falling to Corruption and has only the settlement of Tristone left, and Shadow's Edge was degrading because of Samael's absence (and also falling to Corruption. That theme got tiresome).
@Kuddlesnot
@Kuddlesnot Жыл бұрын
I agree the constant "corruption" got tiresome, but it made thematic sense. However that they didn't use that as a more interesting creeping evil was a missed opportunity. I think that is a reoccurring issue with the DS series as a whole currently - missed opportunity, which is a real shame.
@companylovesmisery1463

True, Corruption is the overarching threat of the game. How it's spreading through Absalom to every realm when his anger should be just directed at Death is... interesting though. I haven't played Genesis much, but having finished these three games (thanks to your walkthroughs- finding all the Stonebites and Abyssal Armor and Ostagoth's relics and I don't-remember-what-all-else from the first two games is ridiculous at times) I agree that they could be more. I love them too though. Downtime for me is going through the Crucible in this game 😃.
