Kuniaki Shibata - Is a Japanese former professional boxer who competed from 1965 to 1977. He is a world champion in two weight classes, having held the WBC and The Ring featherweight titles from 1970 to 1972, the WBA and The Ring super-featherweight titles in 1973, and the WBC super-featherweight title from 1974 to 1975. Shibata was a short and speedy fighter, who took advantage of even the slightest openings to throw in a flurry of punches. However, he also had a very weak chin, and was very susceptible to counter punches. Five of his six career losses were by knockout. He and former WBC lightweight champion Guts Ishimatsu were gym mates, and both fighters were trained by Eddie Townsend.

One of the best and seemingly most underrated Japanese boxers of all time! Kuniaki Shibata was a fantastic well rounded fighter who had excellent poise, balance and beautiful combinations. He is a 2 weight world champion and is one of the few Japanese fighters who won his titles outside of his native country. An underrated but very good fighter at his peak! www.patreon.com/haNZAgod

Interesting fact: Eddie Townsend (Shibata's trainer) was invited to Japan to teach boxing by Rikidozan, the man credited as the godfather of Japanese pro wrestling.

Must’ve been a nightmare to figure out what punch was coming from where. He was so quick that any tells were only visible for a split second.

I’m appreciate of this highlight because I’ve only known of him from his fight with Vicente Saldivar. Shibata is an all around specimen.

He reminds me of fighting Harada by the way he applies pressure he probably picked up a thing or two from him I can see the resemblance in styles is very similar

Definitely similar to Harada stylistically, Shibata is very underrated I rarely see anyone talk about him.

At 1:36 or 1:37 can anyone tell me the name of that side shuffle? Is that a thing or is it just his body’s natural shift to the side to get an angle? Thanks in advance.

There's no specific name for it that's just Shibata's natural ability and shifting to the side. He had excellent movement and was great at creating those little angles to land his combinations.
