While Ed gets on the next train to East Kilbride on emergency business, Ava and Oli hold the fort on this week's Pubcast.
Today we're talking Labour conference, after a turbulent start to Keir Starmer's address stole the limelight from his actual policies. We delve into what Labour are proposing.
We also react to news from City Hall that five new beavers have been released into the wild in London, and Oli gives us a tip on how to ripen your tomatoes off the vine.
Subscribe to our new podcast now, or you're a silly goose:

Quoting Lesley Riddoch, there have only been 4 occasions since 1918 that Scottish votes have influenced the outcome of a General Election. Turnout in Rutherglen was 37%. Substantially more didn’t bother to turn out than voted for any candidate. Of such things landslides are made? Currently, though not on every day, Scotland can be powered 100% from renewables, so Starmer’s energy company based in Scotland will be selling its power elsewhere and apart from the wages, the profits will be elsewhere. Such is the fate of a small energy rich country. If Scots voters are naive enough to return a few Labour MPs, as usual we’ll get the ordure pâté sandwich someone else ordered with no alternative. The return of a Labour government fills me with little joy. More competent than the Tories? There’s a slogan to get behind…

I will say that the house-building situation in Japan is very different than it is anywhere else in the world. I watch a couple that pretty recently built their dream home and they essentially said that if you build or buy a home you are going to lose money on it over time. Houses are not an investment opportunity in Japan.

Every media interviews on Israel starts with a condemnationof Hamas and kind of ends with dog whistles that Palestinians portrayed as not terribly important. As some barbarians that have lost thier minds and are just nihilistic. If we keep on having not very honest talks that contextualize the region, then we just end up with a slow march to Palestinians being ethnically cleansed from the region. I hope this podcast manages to get some people who are naunced and at least non-partisan.
@nathanaelsmith3553

Saying that Hamas / Hezbollah represent all Palestinians is probably as inaccurate as saying that our government represents all of us. All three like to claim that they have a popular mandate and that their values represent most people but I doubt it very much. I suspect they terrorize both Palestinians and Israelis and are covertly equipped and funded by foreign governments. I suspect most Palestinians want de-escalation, not an inflammation of violence.

worth noting that re japan's house building numbers the UK doesn't have earthquakes so UK houses don't depreciate with age (Japan= house values 1/2ed after 10 years and worthless by 25) "old" houses ie someone has owned them before you/over 5 years old are considered dangerous because of constant structural stress/damage from earthquakes. The UK should absolutely be building many more houses (provided it also builds the infrastructure required which it has been very bad at so far, especially sewage and schools) but Japan is not at all a good comparison, unlike eg. France.

I think the Scotland portion towards the end was a little bit uninformed, as support for SNP has remained relatively strong outside Rutherglen. A lot of people are also waiting for more information on sturgeon, and to be honest not really associating SNP with her anymore anyway. Despite her being a particularly popular politician, people were voting SNP before her, and look to afterwards. I appreciate Ava’s humility at the end that conversation

I have heard that there is some discontent in the Highlands with the SNP, who they see as investing in Glasgow and Edinburgh and neglecting everywhere else. I am looking inwards from afar, but it seems that this, combined with the disarray in the SNP and the party’s subpar record in government have caused a shift in politics away from the SNP, for now. This is not to say that the SNP is going away, just that they will be less dominant than in the past, if what I can construe is at all correct.
@alst4817
@alst4817 9 ай бұрын
@@enemystand2981grim? Possibly, but much less grim than the snp. It was years ago I understood that they couldn’t be trusted in government; they were writing legislation on the back of a fag packet. Their recent disgrace will hopefully be the coup de grace for the snp for a decade or so. They need that time to put their house in order. Labour are far less grim than they are

@@unconventionalideas5683 you’re right! Lib Dem though are particularly popular up north, as theyv kind of branded themselves as the party of the highlands. Really enjoyed the show - however, I deeply disagree about the planning system and believe that planning should remain localised. Every planning objection made in Lincoln gets bounced back to some faceless ass in London, who makes a decision based against the wishes of the community, and benefiting only the developers. What I Would love to see is buildings being kept empty taxed, to make sure someone occupies them - or compulsory purchase. London already has too much control over us all.

With politics becoming so short termist now, no matter what is said in the run up to an election the government will likely be firefighting constantly because of the way that media and the electorate act now. Asking that question, are long term goals the right priority? What about this? What about that? They may try but its highly unlikely any long term changes will happen....fully expecting BAU if/when they win.

Planning and green belt has absolutely nothing to do with the lack of house building I live just outside Liverpool in a place called Formby. Sefton council run the area and it is home to some multimillionaires and footballers. And because its a desiriable location four green belt sites have had new build estates go up on them. Everyone with a large garden is selling the land and putting a house on it. Extensions go up all the time. Only about 12 houses per site are classed as desirable Yet in Liverpool theres a rush to build students and apartments and hotels and they would be built a lot faster if peel and liverpool ports didn't hold onto vast swathes of the land. All of sefton has plenty of developments on to green belt but in Liverpool the council take years to clear out old council estates to knock them down only to give to there private developer mates to replace with poorly built tiny expensive characterless new builds. Redrow though will get green belt areas including even part of strawberry feilds but only the rich can afford them homes. The issues are not planning. Its landbanking by greedy developers and landlords owning to much housing stock
