Found this quite educational to listen too. IC did a great job handling radio traffic and trying to slow people down and to communicate clearly.

Good job LAFD on a very challenging incident. This is an example of just how confusing things can get when something goes bad and just getting a clear PAR report from operating units is a challenge. I'm glad that ther was nota ny serious injuries.

To clarify; determine "left" and "Right" as you face the front of the building standing on the OUTSIDE.

Great job by IC and all companies. I like "Engine 9, Truck 9, Rescue 9 all members accounted for". About that current "Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta" what about "FRONT" "Left" (or LIMA), a reinvented "BRAVO" for "Back"of the building, and "right" (or ROMEO).

Lots can be learned by looking at communication concepts used in the aviation industry. RADIO BREVITY. Also, in some parts of Los Angeles, it's efficient to use "North side" East side" etc over "Alpha" "Charlie" etc because you cut down on the extra steps it takes to filter in your brain where in the heck "Alpha" is. Maybe, since some absolutely insist that the front of the building be identified over the radio, without using "North, South, East, West", we CAN use "F" or "Foxtrot" for FRONT.

At around 10:00 is when the trapped firefighter sends traffic.

...or just keep it Fireman proof and identify the front of the building as..."FRONT"! Rear or back of the building as "Rear" or to sound 'LA City Fancy' "ROMEO" (R is for rear). The left and right sides of the building can always be predicated by determining the FRONT....looking at the "Front" of the building..."LEFT" will always remain left and "RIGHT" will always remain right (based on facing the "Front" of the building). Use of "MAYDAY" = good. K.I.S.S. :):):) lets be aggressive, but safe!

And I'm just a Wildland FF, so I'd like someone to explain to me why its so hard to understand guys with SCBAs on. Has no one come up with a system that integrates radios into the masks? Seems like a major safety issue to me. If you can't communicate with the guys inside the building well, then you're missing one of the major standards of incident management.

Too many excited FFs. This doesn't sound like good como at all. Too many people thinking their traffic is the most important. IC is obviously trying to do his best with a rapidly changing situation, but the restraint on the radio isn't there. Also, the department needs to establish a set of working radio language. "Rodger," "Received," "Copy." It seems like a simple thing, but in a hectic environment, you need standardized radio language that everyone uses.
