LAKE BLANCHE & SUNDIAL PEAK: BEST HIKE IN BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON, UTAH’S WASATCH MOUNTAIN RANGE

Hiking to Lake Blanche and then summiting Sundial Peak can make for a day full of adventure in Utah's Wasatch Mountain Range. Lake Blanche Trail is one of the most popular hikes in the Salt Lake City area. Lake Blanche is a relatively short hike at just over 3 miles, but your thighs will get a great workout as it is straight up to the lake at 2,700 feet of elevation. There is a good chance moose will be seen on this trail due to the lush vegetation and flowing water. The scramble up to Sundial Peak can be tricky as the approach to the summit is class 3 and 4. Route finding is needed but is fairly easy as Sundial Peak can be seen from the lake. The trailhead is located in Big Cottonwood Canyon near the S curve. Get to the trailhead early, this continually picturesque trail gets crowded quickly and for good reason!

Climbed Sundial in October. Fun little ridge scramble. Unfortunately later that day someone fell to their death trying to climb it :(

And mind you i domt hike so my knees and ankles were blown up with the running shoes . I just thought id check out youtube since i just got down.

Very busy trail up there but it's still beautiful and worth the visit 👍🏼 I kept going up to Sundial because I like to get away from the crowds 😃 How's the snow pack right now up there?

Thanks man! It’s rather straight forward but there is a slab on the ridgewalk that is VERY sketchy up there so heads up. There was a guy who died shortly after I was up there. Definitely class 4 but super fun scramble! Cheers bro!

Did this on Tuesday. It’s not an easy hike but nice ending at the top. Tough coming down for sure. I would suggest that you include the percentage of the climb and a scale of how hard. Keep up the great work, lucky fella.

Seems like we all overestimate our ability to breeze up and down these peaks lol. I can't tell you how many times I've left my wife at a spot and have had to constantly check my phone for service so I can call and tell her that I'm alive, just running a little behind. Awesome stuff. Looking forward to exploring the Wasatch!

Coming out to Utah this September for getting photo reference. This trail will be on my must see list for sure. Though I doubt I’ll climb to the top as I imagine it would be unwise to attempt with a camera in tow. Can not wait! Cheers to you guys. 🤙 All the best..
@TheMountainMatt

You should have some awesome colors just starting to happen if it’s late enough in September. It’s a popular trail so try to hit it up during the week 👍🏼. There’s a faint trail around the backside of the lake that leads up towards the peak. You should find much more solitude up there and some pretty rad vantage points! I took a GH5 on a mantispod up there so you should be able to get a decent sized tripod up behind the lake, if you really want 😁👍🏼.
