As a health science career, physical therapy is an ideal choice for someone who enjoys exercise, anatomy, and human interaction. Physical therapist assistants, also known as PTAs, are licensed providers of physical therapy services. They work under the direction and supervision of licensed physical therapists. PTAs work with people of all ages, and across many different specialties like sports injuries. But PTAs also work with patients recovering from other injuries, surgeries, and medical conditions.
Lakeland’s Physical Therapist Assistant program is 63 credits completed over five semesters. Our graduates earn an Associates of Applied Science degree in Physical Therapist Assistant. As a student, you’ll learn from licensed PTs and PTAs. Our core PTA courses are taught in-person with emphasis placed on hands-on laboratory activities.
In your fourth semester you begin clinical education which lets you put the knowledge and skills you’ve learned into practice. Lakeland students find that clinical education experiences are not only ways to improve their skills, but they’re also great ways to network and often lead to job offers.
Upon graduating, you’ll be eligible to take the National Physical Therapy Exam for PTAs to complete your licensure so you can begin working in the field.
PTAs are important in helping patients regain movement and manage pain after injuries and illnesses. PTAs find employment in hospitals and nursing homes, outpatient clinics, and schools. Some PTAs even work with patients in their homes. The job market is bright, as the PT field grows in response to the aging population! Lakeland’s Physical Therapist Assistant program is designed for our students to excel in this growing career.
