It's also been a bummer to only have one ear my whole life for lots of other reasons, like, playing telephone growing up, I was terrible at it. Yup, so this was a recreation of JFK and Jackie O. The happy birthday part was when Marilyn Monroe sang happy birthday to JFK.

I think that the video is trying to depict "The American Dream". She believes that money will bring her hapiness, but when there was no one around she was in this sort of constant state of sadness. Lana is very patriotic and likes to give us a new visions of classic americana footages. During this era she was obsessed with living an opulent lifestyle with wealthy men, instant gratification (e.g., drugs and diamonds), and death.

man, you really know nothing about Marilyn Monroe lol the video is a fantasy recreation of JFK's life in Lana's eyes/aesthetic - she's Marilyn and Jackie O. The song is called NATIONAL ANTHEM, so the video is 100% conected with the song. it's super clever because is super on the nose. p.s love your reactions on pop songs

At the very beginning she was sort of playing Marilyn Monroe falling in love with the President and singing for him (you can find the real video online). And the ending of the song is literally the letter Jackie wrote the day JFK was assassinated.

Your silence is the best reaction! Haha 😅 The thing with this piece is not literal as you guessed. It's not about rights, neither about money itself. It's about the American dream, that's why the Marylin and Jackie recreations. One of the signatures of her persona is the vintage and the idealization of life, and you can see it and read it between the lines. Will frequently found something spoken superficially about money, sugar daddy, or even death... but it's all about life, about the life she is dreaming of! Her new album it's called Norman F***ing Rockwell, who was a famous American artist of the 20th century, for periodicals, magazines etc. In this album he is more mature, on my personal opinion, not seeking happiness on others, but trying to help instead! Check out "Mariners Appartment Complex" and you'll see it. :)

This is a recreation of JFK and Jackie's relationship. But she is a combination of Marilyn and Jackie, and the outro is a lettter that she, Jackie, wrote for him after his death. That's the video. The song, for me, talks about how this man is powerful and rich, that money is his anthem, but that wont matter. She has to be his anthem, money is the anthem of his world of busnisess, but she wants to be the greatest thing in his life.

Lana was playing the role of Marilyn Monroe, recreating when she sang Happy Birthday, Mr President to JFK, and also the role of the wife, Jackie. A$AP Rocky played the role of JFK. National Anthem was originally called I Want It All, and had a different chorus. It was more about greed and materialism. The video is about 'the dark side of the American dream' (from her song Without You), with the double life of JFK (who had many affairs) and the assassination, which 'killed' many hopes and dreams for Americans at that time. A lot of her songs on BTD deal with grief.

I've always interpreted the song as a young woman who got lured in with the guy because of his riches and but she realizes not only how attractive he is but how he completes her and makes her feel loved. They're codependent and worship each other which is where the sings about giving each other a standing ovation. She isn't fulfilled with her life but she became more confident and sure of her self and the man as the song progress, she loves her opulent lifestyle of the American upper echelon but she also found security and love.

Agreed on the lyrical delivery, its almost a bit rap like quality in this song. A suggestion maybe react to DON'T CALL ME ANGEL from the 2019 Charlie's Angels Movie Soundtrack. It's a collaboration with ARIANA GRANDE & MILEY CYRUS and maybe a bit of a bridge to their catalogue. :)

The song and the music video are definitely not connected. But the song was written LONG before born to die was even thought of. The video just went with Lana’s aesthetic/image at the time.
