I've been following Harry's garage since the start of lock-down. I'm working my way through his back catalogue and found this one I missed. I was going to buy one from Walker's Garage in North Yorkshire in 2001, but I was working away from home and needed something that could handle 30k miles/year. In 2017 (having hit 50) I was looking for a toy and started looking at these again. After looking at a few in my price range and talking to Walker's again, I quickly realised that I would end up handing over a large chunk of my pension pot to get a good one. An opportunity missed. But a pleasure to see a real-world review. Thanks Harry

Lancia started to race in late '60 and they won till they left in mid '90. Audi, Peugeot, Toyota....they all had their time but no one was winning for so long. Still today Lancia is the most iconic brand in the Rally world but they can't make a decent car since they left racing 25 years ago.

You sum this car up absolutely dead on - I was lucky enough to own 4 of them and my last one (1995 model) I used every day through the B roads of Herefordshire. The steering, the suspension etc etc - it's just such a special car. I always loved the way it was "the real deal" and so close to the actual rally version - stuff like a radiator for the power steering - brilliant.

It's just so refreshing to listen to one of the most respected motor journalist over the past 30 years impart his pearls of wisdom to us all :-) As for this absolute belter of a hot hatch, in my opinion Lancia nailed it! - and no one has delivered the shear driving pleasure or emotions evoked when sat behind the wheel. Got to drive one on several occasions, and Harry is absolutely correct about the handling and verve of this little hothatch. The ride that I received in an S4 on gravel was unforgettable! Lancia delta integrale uses a simular if not the same 2ltr non turbo fiat tipo sedicivalvole head, integrale has bronze valve guides fitted to cope with the extra heat the turbo charger system creates. I had to break an early fiat sedici that had bottom end issues and sold the head and inlet manifold to a company called red mist racing, they used to source the fiat heads and convert them for the lancia delta integrale (which was good for me recouping some cash for my dead car at the time), but the intake sound of the 16v fiat tipo sedicivalvole was very loud/impressive for a 4 pot.

"They took a 80's hatchbackAnd won the world championship! And then thought "Well, let's do that again"- and won it again, and then again, then thought "I can't believe we gonna win it again", came up with 16 valve head and won the championship again, and then came up with the evo version- and won again, and then said "Well, that's getting a bit too easy" and gave up doing the Works entry and just supplied cars to Martini Racing- and they won the world championship for them..." Now that's what you call an epic carmaker. Too bad Fiat wasn't into reviving Lancia into a sporty company and baisically destroyed the brand by ugly economy cars.
@AliTaylor7779 жыл бұрын
Couldn't have put it better. Given that FIAT have now revealed that all Lancias bar the Ypsilon will cease production and the Ypsilon only go on sale in Italy from now on, the death of Lancia is nearly complete. And yet, 22 years after Lancia pulled out of rallying, no other manufacturer has come close to matching their record of championships. I only hope they eventually see sense and bring Lancia back, perhaps in the way they revived Abarth, as a specialist producer of limited volume cars.
@iehen9 жыл бұрын
Alistair Taylor the destruction of Lancia by Fiat is a tremendous example of incompetence. They had Alfa and Lancia, 2 gold mines.. they destroyed them both systematically, eliminating any distinctive element. Potentially this brand could have been an antagonist of Audi: FWD/4WD, elegant, stylish, quiet but cool, good for old and young people, and with a sport heritage too!

When I was a teenager the car-magazine I always bought (Autogids) used to have one long article by Paul Frère, a retired racing driver with a lot of charisma and joie de vivre, who was often called the nobleman of autosport because of his gentleman like behaviour and eloquent style of talking and writing. He had countless fascinating stories to tell an did so with a passion and love for automobiles that really radiated through his articles and got the reader fascinated from the get go. But above all he knew what he was talking about. Many other journalists had, and still have, the tendency to parrot all the stuff they get to hear on the press event from the constructors which often resulted in a well intended article, but a commercial almost, often with “findings” about for instance the handling of the car that were clearly coloured by the press talk they got from some well spoken engineer. But Frère always judged the cars by what he actually experienced and had the ability to explain the most complex technical issues in a very clear and accessible manner that really gave you insight in the actual functioning of just about anything. Paul Frère is no longer with us but if he still was he’d love this channel. I know I do, and when I watch one of Harry’s videos I somehow feel like that young lad again, eager to learn everything about cars, looking forward to the new edition of Autogids and always saving that one special article till the end, like the cherry on top of the cake. Harry’s videos are like that too, you take the time for it, you pour yourself a drink or a nice cup of tea and you just let the man talk and enjoy the magic.
