Hi, I’m Markus Pukonen and this is my Adventure Travel Vlog Series. I am travelling around the planet without ever using motorized transport. I started this journey in Toronto, Canada in July of 2015 and intend to circumnavigate back to where I started.
In this weekly youtube series (Every Sunday at 4PM EST) I will share my day to day experiences of what it’s like to travel around the earth under my own power (with help from some wind and currents too!). Loads of epic adventure videos I’m happy to share with you.
Become a patron and join the Routes of Change community here for exclusive behind the scenes access: / routesofchange
SPOILER ALERT:!!
I started the journey in a canoe and have since trimaraned, hand cycled, pogosticked, tricycled, skiied, rafted, kayaked, SUPed, rowed, bicycled, sailed, walked, and danced half way around the planet.

Mandarin! I loved hearing the lessons in the background as you talk about sailing haha. Did those lessons come in handy? I guess I'll find out as I continue to catch up on the series. You missed your chance to practice with those Chinese fishermen you spotted.

Unless you’re a flerfer what has been your most memorable seeing coming or going over the horizon?
@Routesofchange

I don't think it's possible to be a flerfer while traveling AROUND the world. 😀. Tough question but probably leaving Hawaii. It was my first time solo at sea.

How much water would you pack? Did you mostly boil ocean water?
@Routesofchange
@Routesofchange Жыл бұрын
I carried about 220L with me. Boiling salt water is a very inefficient way to get the salt out. I would have to carry alot of gas to do that, plus the boat would be super hot.

outstanding! so my question is where are you now? date is 8/17/2020. Were you born into a nautical family or did you just get into it? Did you grow up on an island or coast?

I sailed on Lake Ontario and some other small lakes in the area with my Dad as a child. I knew how to handle a simple boat but not much beyond that. I hadn't sailed for over a decade when I got on the boat in SF. Here is where I am now www.routesofchange.org/route cheers!

Girls are curious what a preventer line is?
@Routesofchange
@Routesofchange 4 жыл бұрын
It runs from the end of the boom and prevents it from accidentally (and often violently) jibing/swinging from one side of the boat to the other. I often use it when sailing down wind.

Being out by your lonesome for three weeks, did the camera end up feeling like having another person/entity onboard that you would relate to? I can imagine that at phases during the journey you spend a lot of solitary time, but you're still immersed in societies big and small. This time it's you and a boat.
@Routesofchange

Another good question. Yes and no. The camera didn't feel alive whatsoever but knowing that I was speaking to people on the other end (in the future) definitely made it feel like company in some way. I spoke to the fish and birds all the time too! As with any self reflection (writing, drawing, speaking, filming) I think it is very helpful to your mental state to get to know yourself more, whether you are in the middle of the ocean alone on a boat or in the middle of a big city. Cheers!

How did u cope with loneliness?
@Routesofchange
@Routesofchange 3 жыл бұрын
There's a big difference between being alone and being lonely. I love being alone and am mentally prepared for it. Loneliness is something I have troubles with in a city where there are people everywhere but no one acknowledges my existence.
