The Owner's Manual iGuide explains how to disable automatic operation of the Electric Parking Brake thusly: "To prevent automatic operation, when the vehicle is stationary, pull out and hold the EPB switch. Within 5 seconds, switch off the vehicle’s electrical system and continue to hold the EPB switch for a further 2 seconds." 😊

Yes i think it is not just the callipers ( the ones i used are also used on the Disco 5 and the Defender V8 ) - you also need a wheel with a little more space.

I have a set of 18’s just waiting for someone to come up with a solution to this. I do think that the caliper and wheel should have a fair amount of clearance to avoid any damage from rocks. Please Simon don’t give up, try to find a solution for this WITHOUT spacers. Thank you for always trying to help us poor souls in the States.

Reading the comments it seems that this calliper swap needs to be accompanied with a wheel with a different offset ( similar effect to spaces )

I even had this problem when I wanted to put the JLR 18" steels on my D240. The front pistons were the 6 pot Brembos! Opted for 20", and sold the steels to some very lucky entrepreneur.

That would most likely be due to 22s being ordered on the vehicle

I changed the brakes when I got my D3 for the larger discs thanks to your videos and needed new calliper carriers so also went for 19” wheels. So went up in size though I don’t plan on going off road. So many thanks for those older brake videos 👍

In America we don’t have diesels but we do have P300, P400 and V8. Lots of P400 owners look into the brake swap to be able to fit 18” wheels. My P300 came with 18” steelies.

Simon…brave work best left to the overseas markets I think! I would just buy 19” and be happy with them rather than stripping the brakes. It clearly is a big job when an overhaul comes up so as my DS was still on its factory build discs as pads at 43,700, I shall continue gently and sell the L494 before it gets past 35,000!!…the JLR brake service bill might be worrying!!😱😱😬😬😀😀😀😀😀

In my opinion you need plenty of gap between the wheel and the calliper in case you bash and flat spot a wheel by accident out on the trail. What is that gap on those defenders that can from factory fit 18s such as your Stig? Could you measure it on the Stig? That is the gap that imo you should be aiming to achieve on the p400 too.

The gaps are very small to fit 18’s. Most are not using steel wheels, probably for the reason you mentioned.

Nice video. I have a P400 D90. I had my calipers swapped by a local swap. Your video covers a number of areas that had me concerned. I’m running the TuffAnt Kakadus, +29 offset. The stock 19” wheels, Newsom style 6010 have a +41.5 offset.
@L663
@L663 Ай бұрын
The change of offset seems to be the key to getting the 18" wheels to fit.

I tried this about a year ago and did not like the fitment, too close for comfort. I stuck with 20” wheels. I got some 25mm spacers and with a little trimming on the lower front bumper, removing an aluminum bracket and metal plate on the back side of the wheel well, and a 1.5” lift, I was able to fit a 34.2” very aggressive Toyo Open Country RT Trail (275/65/R20) and still keep the classic mudflaps in place in the front and rear. Any larger and you would definitely need to do more serious trimming and modifications. I did NOT have to relocate the auxiliary radiators in front of the tires with this set up. I did have trim the shroud for the radiators though. It takes a little geometry on figuring out the fitment based on the specific wheel setup you choose but that’s what worked for me and the stance on my D90 looks very aggressive and much larger when parked next to a base model.

Hey Simon. The steelies require spacers and a grind of the swapped Disco5 caliper if they are to fit. Even then it's a squeaker, especially on the fronts. Too close for comfort. The 18" wheels that work have a smaller offset than the OEM +41.5.mm Tuffant Simpson, Tuffant, Kimberley, Redbourne Alston (black Rhino now) and Dakar Zero all work with the swap. Offsets are 27,29,? and 25 respectively. I run my P400 on the OEM factory calipers with Tuffant 18" rims. (Kimberley). A very simple job to grind off the extra metal that seems to serve as a mud scraper. The OEM caliper was designed it seems to clear the 19" wheel of debris. Also you have to remove the mud scraper from the front assembly. 30 second job. 1x Torx t30. i have about 35,000miles on the vehicle since the caliper trim.

Interesting theory on the calliper scraper for the rib on the calliper. It does not look like this to me - looking at the design of the front scraper - it is clearly there as a scraper. That is quite a difference in offset from 25 to 41mm. I need to do the front change video - but as you say its not complex. Thanks for your detailed information on the wheels.

My pleasure Simon. I'm no expert and but dived down this rabbit hole quite deeply prior to modding my brakes. Spacers on steelies for me was a no go. Thanks for all the great videos. Love the content and your products.

Hi Simon…….yet another excellent video if not a little confusing….. Re the Australian reference….. I don’t know if you realise that I’m a Kiwi living on the Sunshine Coast in Queenzland Australia….. and have been since august 2005….. But I refuse to take out Australian citizenship….. yes something to do with yachting…. Americas cup….rugby union….. mota car racing etc etc…… But the biggest reason that I don’t want Australian citizenship is…… I don’t want to lower my IQ to comply!!! Aussies are quite thick…. In my opinion!!!! Regards Ian 👨‍🎤🇳🇿😎👍🍸🍸

Also. Activate service mode opens some valves in the ABS system allows you to bleed the entire system. Simple to do. I've done it at 21,000 and 42,000 miles. A catch vessel 50mm+ above the bleeder valve is best.

By service mode - you mean use Topix or IID tool to put it in brake service mode ?
@gavinconvey5090

@@L663 I used GAP IID tool. There is a section of brake lines that a flush wont get to without entering service mode.

@L663
@L663 Ай бұрын
@@newdefendermods I think this is the different service mode - the app only puts the TCU ( telematics control unit ) into service mode - this basically stops the car sending a warning message to Land Rover when the battery is disconnected.

Great video as always Simon! I think most people seem to go for the TuffAnt wheel as you say - maybe the Bowler ones could fit too?? PS. Any chance you could investigate what options us V8 (same set up in the p400e too) owners have? Is it just 20” or bigger? How about 19”?

Have you thought of what your insurance company would say if you were involved in an accident and they found you had changed the brakes from standard?
@newdefendermods
@newdefendermods Ай бұрын
Everyone that modifies their vehicle usually knows it is their responsibility to inform their insurance company of any accessories or modifications, brake and caliper kits are a fairly common modification in the aftermarket industry
