I am not a mechanic, I only play one on KZfaq. A quick video on some time saving tips on the Installation of this oddly situated part. Plus a run down of symptoms on a failing sensor.
Side Notes: I did use jack stands during the installation (thank you all for your concern) Be sure to use OEM LR parts, these vehicles are finicky and off market brands will not last as long.

Thanks a lot for this, got my D2 up and running again. Just a tip if you use a small socket set with extensions the nuts are very easy to get off don't even have to put hands up there. Also used a long screwdriver to remove the harness from the bracket easily from underneath

Thanks for the vid. Fixed my issues w/ random stalling while underway (electrical system fine). A few comments: removing and reinstalling the shield and sensor is super easy, used a small ratchet and sockets. A short wobbly extension may help. Unplugging connector was aided by long screwdriver to wedge the locking tab open. The BIG PAIN is reattaching the new sensor to harness. My harness had almost no slack, so the plug could not be pulled down or over. No way to grab it from the topside and the mounting clip blocks access from below. Barely reachable from below via long skinny arms. can't get two hands on it (and I am pretty slim). If I had only 2 more cm of wire in harness it wouldve been much easier, and 5 more cm it could even be grabbed from above. Different vehicles may vary on this. It may be worth using a mirror and looking to see if you can free up some length in the harness. I was minutes away from dropping the exhaust which would allow two hands up there. Finally my wife somehow did it after 90mins of trying. The clicking of the connector locking wa one of the best sounds ever. You should be prepared to drop the exhaust from the manifold in case you cannot get it (only 3 bolts but we all know how much fun they can be). One of those skinny reacher/grabber spring claw things could be useful - I may have been able to hold the connector from topside with one of these giving the wife something to push against. Anyway this is a 15 min job that likely takes hours due to lack of access.

Great Video Rob! Many thanks! Your accomplishment was an inspiration for me to attempt to do it myself, as I do not claim to be a mechanic either. You saved me an over $700.00 that a garage wanted to charge me for the same work. I discovered a little trick you didn't show which enabled me to do it just under two hours. You might add this note for others to try... Instead of pulling the plug up with the wiring harness, I was able to wedge it in place with a really big screwdriver coming in from the side with my right hand, and I could both unplug and replug it in place that way.

how do you unplug the electrical end of the sensor? I have a 2003 Discovery II SE 4.6L automatic with secondary air. It does not appear to be accessible at all from the top. Very difficult to reach from the bottom. I have the sensor end unplugged, now I do not see how it is possible to unplug the electrical end of it.

Hmmm Steve, once I was able to slide it out of it's harness it became quite visible from the top of the engine. It slides out pushing it towards to rear. (in my 2001 it did). I had to reach down below the manifold and used 1 hand to unhook. perhaps in the 2003 its a little lower.

Rob Marino - I finally got it out and back in! Without taking off the exhaust below or the secondary air crap above. It was not possible for me to reach it from above but my daughter has very thin arms and smaller hands and was able to plug it back in after 10 min or so of trying. I had to put lotion on my arm to reach the bottom end which I had to connect without being able to see it. I would say don't even try it unless you can get the exhaust pipes off the manifold. These bolts were rusted too bad to take them out without breaking them I think. All that and it didn't help. Bought the iLAND Diagnostic tool to see I can find my no start problem with that.
@robmarino6787
@robmarino6787 6 жыл бұрын
absolutely getting the manifold off would greatly benefit but I was in the same position as you. The bolts looked rusty and I certainly did not need to break them, that would have created a much bigger problem for DIY mechanic. Good thinking having your daughter help, others have said their wife had to do it. It is unfortunate it didn't solve your issue though, good luck going forward. When you do find out please let me know the result. Thanks again.

Diagnosed problem by verifying no spark and no tachometer movement while cranking. Also by connecting diagnostic scanner and getting P0335 code. However unless you have a service pit or extremely long and slender arms, this repair is impossible. Was able to reach sensor body from below, but not able to reach electrical connector to the sensor from top or from below vehicle. Would have to completely remove exhaust system and other parts on left side of engine to access this thing.

Hi Ana, after I posted the video I thought perhaps I should have stated it would have been much easier to do if I unhooked the exhaust pipe from the manifold but of course that is certainly not an easy task for a simple DIY mechanic. As you can see from the Video I'm not a small guy, not large guy either but I was able to accomplish the entire repair without taking anything extra apart. jumping from below the car, which was jacked up pretty high, to the top of the engine. This also would be much easier with help of a second person of course. Most things are!! :)

ahh since Im here Ill post here too maybe for others who haven't worked on these vehicles much.. IF you have not, then here is a little insight on removing the exhaust... SOAK THE BOLTS to the Y Pipe for a few days if possible every day, they rust in nice and good! one of my bolt heads sheered off when installing new flange gaskets and i had to get out a REALLY SHARP GOOD drill bit and drill it out and chase the threads with my thread reamer... a 45 min job ended up being a few Hrs... i didnt soak mine long and they were worse than they seemed.. anyway that was of course one of the bolts where the Y Pipe meets the exhaust manifold...its strait forward just take time...

Great video. Thank you. For the life of me, I cannot disconnect the sensor plug out of the harness from top or bottom. It is equally hard to reach. Let me understand this correctly, the sensor and harness plugs are kept together with the small nubby tab on the side of the sensor connector, right? That The harness connector fits on top of the sensor connector like a sleeve? So, to disconnect the two, the tab on the sensor connector has to be pushed in, or the connector on the harness side (sleeve) has to be pried/lifted with a screwdriver?

Im not far behind! im about to do this... Mine starts normal but a week ago while driving truck stumbled... then no issues... last night driving home late at night just died instantly... no electrical change in lights or anything or being able to turn engine over... wait about 3-5 mins and it starts up... my onboard OBD II gauge just went into error mode but no codes... same thing happened again this am on way to work lol since I cant get it to set a code or pending code before it dies, I decided to go ahead and order the part even if its not this ( but I suspect it is) . if its not and all of a sudden I did need it Id like to have it handy lol... anyway... i removed the OBD II gauge as i have also heard before of one malfunctioning and causing havoc on engine... when I unplugged ( maybe timing coincidence) disco II started right up... im pretty sure on any other situation like bad ignition or something then Id throw a code but I read on this situation it may die before a code sets in computer...

This part can be quite frustrating, not only about where it's located but also the issues it throws at you. It makes you think it could be the fuel pump, the alternator, the battery or the leads, something in the timing...etc. Once you gather all the symptoms; the stalling at low idle, no start but cranking, no start then start up after a few minutes, the unpredictable codes. With mine, check engine light came on but should no codes. Once I fixed, check light turned off. If you have the part you may as well install and see the outcome and go from there.

I finally threw to code while a couple of cranks of engine.. its been dead in the water for 2 days waiting the part lol i ordered it before it failed as I was already pretty sure this was the issue lol Im at 125 miles on my 03 ... when cranking no RPM so no signal was coming from sensor that I could tell and mine actually died mid drive about 10 mins in... 2 times and then it was done... hopefully USPS is on time for tomorrow! lol ive been suspecting this could happen as my gas milage had dropped but no signs anywhere of the issue but one day abut 3 months ago it wouldnt start... then it started... i ran codes and nothing so I dismissed it as a hiccup on a 125k dico.. I received the package fast ( 2 days) but thinking it wouldn't be available locally BUT IT WAS! lol anyway, took me about 1.5 hrs ( including running back to parts store for tools) and I didnt drop exhaust... it was pretty simple but my forearms just a little to large to reach that plug up by engine so I went down the street to a local speed shop and picked up (2 ) 11" long needle nose pliers bent with 90deg tip and with one in each hand I was able to hold the loose top connector on the wiring harness and bottom connector with the second set pliers and press them together until they locked... then fired up the truck and has been running great!! on hindsight, i think id reconnect the top wiring harness plug to new sensor before installing the new sensor.. it was more difficult to match up the sensor plug halves to the wiring harness since the plug has a really stiff cable running off of it... anyway worked great and if i had it to do again I could do it in 30 mins now including taking a few sips of coffee lol
