This is the first start after fitting new piston rings, big end bearings, exhaust and injector pump seals. It wasn't plain sailing.....

hi , I have the same type of noise, after an identical reassembly of the engine, piston, segmentation, big end, injectors... how did you adjust the banging? Just adjusting the valves? thank you
@stuartparfitt22942 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes the valve clearance on No 1 piston had closed right up, I think perhaps it wasn't seated in the pushrod properly when I initially set the clearances.

@@stuartparfitt2294 piston 1 is buckhead side or radiator side ?
@stuartparfitt22942 жыл бұрын
@@loickdu09 Number 1 is the radiator side, but any of them not opening properly could cause it, so worth checking all of the clearances.

I'd say the TDI is easily land rover's best engine, but I think it's character is not quite right for a series, and also you'd be doubling the power (and probably the torque) and then feeding it just through the back axle.

Well done 👍🏻 What’s the diesel like to drive in modern traffic ? I’m thinking of buying a S3 Diesel
@stuartparfitt22944 жыл бұрын
In town it's fine, on the open road it might do 55mph, but it's not that happy about it, 45-50 seems to suit it. I've fitted larger 110 wheels and tyres which have raised the gearing, but an overdrive would probably help. I've previously owned a series 3 petrol, and bought this one with the intention of putting a petrol engine in it. But for all it's faults I prefer the diesel, it really suits the character of the Landy, and Iove driving it! This one has the later 5 bearing engine which is more long-lived than the earlier 3 bearing version.

@@stuartparfitt2294 if you can afford it mate get a roamerdrive. I fitted one in mine after doing a 200 tdi conv. Easy to fit, if you want to sell it or transfer it that’s easy and quick to refit original stuff. I don’t flog mine but the old petrol was very tired and thirsty so the tdi makes 45/50 easy without od and means I could drive uphill at 50. Which was unheard of! With the od I did a wales trip on mainly small a and B roads and plenty of unclassified ones in Wales, single track twisty fearsome gradients etc no overdrive required for them! Over 1053 miles I used 30 gall. That’s 35.1 mpg. Lwb 1961. I got the od from online Syncro gearboxes 1500 inclusive. Probably a bit more now. But the difference in driving is fantastic. Much more relaxed and civilised at 50( plus or minus 5). I would recommend it as a really worthwhile mod, and in hilly terrain od third is great.

@@highdownmartin Thanks for the advice, I probably will one day, but first I think I ought to rebuild the gearbox.
