Since registering the Series, I have always had an issue with acceleration past mid pedal, so basically any driving that required more throttle (hills etc). This 'fuel starvation' symptom bugged me, and after going through basically all avenues (checking fuel lines, filters, tank, pump timing adjustments) I finally found the issue which I share in this video! Perhaps this can help you unleash an extra 0.5 hp in your diesel :)
For two great cav pump rebuild vids see • Ferguson FE35 Injectio...
Note: My videos are not a tutorial/how to. I am not a qualified mechanic/woodworker so please refer to your workshop manual with your work. Do not use the content on my channel as a replacement for a workshop manual or professional services.

Man that’s awesome! Such a little manufacturing error causing a decrease in power. Good find. Cheers Damon

just a shame that we always have to eliminate so many other things before the simple solution! Looking forward to watching the fuel injection pump rebuild. Cheers!

Was just messing about with my fuel system and noticed the same on my fuel filter banjo bolt - will give the drilling a shot. As others have mentioned, thanks so much for taking the time to make these videos!

Well, that is a surprise (and not) that you also found the same issue, so perhaps was a run of these that have an issue. Glad you sorted it out, hopefully you will notice a little more gain in power.

The vehicle is bullet proof , so easy to work on and repair . Recommended MK1 range rover diffs fairly overdrive lube the springs change the bushings . If you have access to a 3 .5 Perkin this is a great conversation .

200tdi or 300tdi also good. But with my 2.25 diesel, RRC diffs are too tall. Very versatile, lots of options ;)

Ah good advice! I've been plagued with a similar power issue so I'll be sure to add that to the list of things to check... Much appreciated, and thank you for all your time and effort putting videos like this together. Love the restoration videos!

@@rovertasmania7033 How did it help? Mine has a tiny tiny pin prick hole but someone told me that was to stop the bubbling of fuel which is why I had always left it. I'd be interested to hear your result though!

@@killerbanjo pin prick hole is correct, mine didnt have the hole go through (possible manufacturing error) so was effectively blocked. So leave yours as is.

Try a Perkins 3.5 and a bell housing change ,MK1 range rover diffs and a over drive. I was doing this back in the early 90 s it works.bullet proof .

Nice find! I looked at my fuel return banjo bolt. I noticed there is a small hole kind of like a jet. It was smaller than .022 inch so I hand drilled it to .033 inch.

When I put the tdi into my petrol 109 it ran beautifully from the first press of the starter. But when I got up to 45/48 mph on the speedo it would stutter and top out and if I backed off on the throttle it would be happy at 45 again. I knew something was wrong somewhere, I suspected fuel frothing cos the filter is bolted to the top of the timing cover, not the bulkhead. Wasn’t that. Changed the fuel pump, thought I must have been that because the old seemed very worn. Wasn’t that. Then all praise to the Internet, I came across a mention of the banjo Bolt on the injection pump itself , the return line has a banjo bolt with a 1/8” hole not the 3/8” hole that all the others have. So the fuel pump fills the injection pump and pressures it at all times. Got the right sized banjobolt and that was the problem. Bizarrely the one fitted with no constrictor looked like it had been in there for years and not been moved , the dirt and oil round it matched and it was a snap tight undo. But that engine had only just come out of a defender, ( it’s a disco engine originally)and the bloke who was having it changed was having a V8 fitted for more power. So maybe he’d been running round with this problem for ages? Just one bolt in the wrong hole.......

Sounds like the same issue, wonder how many engines out there are running poorly due to this tiny issue. You went through same diagnosis i did too. Great you sorted it out.

@@rovertasmania7033 just having the full rev range available, such as it is , makes driving it so much better. You probably haven’t gained any power but you can now use what you’ve got, and get into top at a better speed.

Surely, the banjo ring has a recess inside so the one hole in your banjo bolt vents into the recess and down the line? High flow banjo bolts have two holes (eg a carb inlet on an SU carb), but single hole is more than enough for an air vent.

Yeah, but when theres no hole then it doesnt work as intended :)

@@rovertasmania7033 At 6:26 the bolt shows one hole on the side,. The fuel flows up the centre of the bolt, and out through this hole into the recess around the inside the banjo ring, then out the drain tube.

Check the obvious first, like lift pump, injector pump timing and stuff like that. I take it you got injectors serviced? The injector pump has a fine gauze mesh in the inlet, make sure not blocked. In tank pick up pipe, they can rust and suck air in so check all fuel hoses and filters.

I can't agree because in my opinion with such a vehicle you should rather enjoy the drive at a relaxed pace and see a lot of the beautiful landscape. And by the way - at 70Km/h it feels almost faster than a boring modern vehicle at 100 😉
