Landing a Plane On PURE ICE - Lake Below!

In this video I travel to Gull Lake, Alberta (west of Lacombe, Alberta) with my PA38-112 Piper Tomahawk. It's my first time attempting to land on a frozen lake runway. Afterwards, I provide a pilot debrief as to what it was like. It's flights like these that make General Aviation and aircraft ownership so worth it! Enjoy the views, and thank you for watching!

Bucket list item for me - but it just hasn't gotten cold enough around here in the last few years. Maybe I'll have to come back out to Alberta.

Glen! I'm a big fan of your channel and all the work you did on your 172! We would be happy to see you make your way to Alberta. The Gull Lake strip is a yearly thing that gets set up every winter!

Wow, cool video. How thick is the ice to support the weight of the loaded plane ? Also, how long is the runway ? I did not see a barrier at the end to stop you if you were to come in to hot !!!

The runway was cleared to 2800 feet. As far as thickness, a drill test a few days prior to my flight came in at around 30 inches thick. They hosted a fly-in there a few days prior where dozens of aircraft showed up. To give some perspective, my plane with me and the fuel I had on board weighed around half the weight of an empty 2024 Honda Civic. Small planes are lighter than most people realize!

@planeswithperry we need to do a fundraiser for you to get you a new visor for the PAX side... Also a bit concerned about your iPad position blocking your situational awareness of any other aircraft, it's creating a blind spot for you which could be deadly. I've seen it too many times in midair crash report investigations.

It probably looks like it from the camera angle, but from where I'm sitting the iPad is no further in my view than what the view would be past the A-pillar and side mirror of a car and doesn't interfere with my view outside the window. I can still see runways and taxiways on both sides of runways. As for the visor, I am looking for half a bracket that is 1/4 of the size of a credit card but refuse to pay the $300 a parts vendor wants for it when Ray Bans are cheaper 🤣

There were definitely a couple long feeling seconds where I wasn't sure what to expect...until I got a feeling for the wheels and the control on that ice 👍
